These include the family, class, gender and ethnic relations, global change and the relationship between the state and the individual. The programme explores these themes and issues in both historical and contemporary contexts and seeks to impart an appreciation of the wide range and relevance of sociological knowledge with respect to contemporary societies. You are also introduced to the main methods of research in sociology, and supported in designing and carrying out their own pieces of sociological research, especially through a third year dissertation. 1 University of Bradford

2 Programme Aims The programme is intended to: provide you with an in-depth understanding of the main areas of theoretical and empirical knowledge in the field of sociology; provide a supportive, structured environment in which you are encouraged to develop independent learning and research skills; provide education in discipline skills to enable you to pursue further programmes of study or careers in areas where social science skills are required or desirable; develop personal transferable skills fundamental to your career development and future career progression. Programme Learning Outcomes To be eligible for the award of Certificate of Higher Education at FHEQ level 4, students will be able to: LO1 LO LO3 LO4 LO5 Understand and reflect on basic concepts and theoretical approaches in Sociology, and examine the relationship between individuals, groups and social institutions; Understand the role of culture in social life, social diversity and power relations, and the social processes underpinning social change; Demonstrate understanding of research strategies and methods, and the use of evidence to support argument; Understand sociologically informed questions, using foundation theoretical perspectives and concepts in Sociology; Present scholarly work, assess empirical information, and understand the ethical implications of sociological enquiry; LO6 Demonstrate foundation learning and study skills in critical and analytical thinking, information searching and collection, group work, IT, written and oral communication, and time planning and management. Students will be eligible for the award of Honours Degree of Bachelor if they have successfully completed at least 360 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes. Placement and/or Study Abroad This programme provides the option for students to undertake a work placement or period of study abroad between Stages and 3. Students wishing to take this option will be registered for the 4 year programme and will complete module PES500-Z Study Abroad or PES5001-Z Placement. Alternatively, you may complete 60 credits of agreed level 5 study at a study abroad partner institution approved by your programme leader and the University of Bradford International Office. 5 Learning and Teaching Strategy The teaching and learning strategy for the programme takes into consideration the learning outcomes set out above, progression through the levels of study, the nature of the subject, and the need for you to take greater responsibility for your own learning as you progress through the programme. Modes of teaching include group work, lectures, seminars, use of video and interactive material and on-line exercises. Class sizes vary and in Stage One we provide specific opportunity for you to engage with your Personal Tutor through seminars (as part of our Learning Strategies module). This provides you with direct guidance on how to address the learning challenges of your first year at university. In later years, modules become more specialised and reflect the learning outcomes for that particular year. A significant element of optionality is provided in the third year through the dissertation and one other module choice. Class sizes tend to be smaller in Stages Two and Three, allowing for more innovative and varied class exercises, group work and other interactive learning opportunities. All modules are supported by a virtual learning environment which allows you easy access to overheads, lecture notes and other relevant teaching materials. Assessment Strategy The assessments mostly focus on examinations and essays. However, they also incorporate presentations, book reviews, exercises in self-analysis and the preparation of research proposals. This is designed to give a balanced portfolio of assessments that reflects the varied abilities of all students and their need to demonstrate skills on a range of fronts to potential employers. Our practice of allocating the same personal tutor for all three years of the programme provides you with consistent support in building on feedback from your assessments. Assessment Regulations This Programme conforms to the standard University Regulations which are available at the following link: Admission Requirements The University welcomes applications from all potential students and most important in the decision to offer a place is our assessment of a candidate s potential to benefit from their studies and of their ability to succeed on this particular programme. Consideration of applications will be based on a combination of formal academic qualifications and other relevant experience. The minimum entry requirements for the programme are as follows: CCC/40 UCAS points. There are no specific subject requirements at A level. The UCAS tariff applicable may vary and is published here We also accept MMM at BTec Extended Diploma and applications with an Access to Higher Education Diploma that includes 30 Level 3 credits at Merit English language requirements for overseas students are a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or the equivalent. 5 University of Bradford

6 6 Recognition of Prior Learning If applicants have prior certificated learning or professional experience which may be equivalent to parts of this programme, the University has procedures to evaluate and recognise this learning in order to provide applicants with exemptions from specified modules or parts of the programme.
