3 Spring of 2007 From the Presidents: Dear Members, We know how precious your time is at this point in the school year. Therefore, as you are rejuvenating yourself, over the summer, we would like to invite you to reflect, on the following questions ~ 1. How do you promote your Health and Physical Education programs in your school and your community? Some ideas follow: Write an article or have a student write an article that describes what your students are learning in your class. This is an opportunity to communicate the quality activities you offer throughout the school year. Have your students create a bulletin board (pertinent news, student success, upcoming activities or events, or muscles/bones of the month). Ask to do a presentation about your program at a PTA meeting or a School Board meeting. Organize a family night as a culminating event of one of your most engaging units. 2. Are your colleagues members of NYS AHPERD? Encourage them to join. How can the Capital Zone help you? Contact us and let us know your thoughts. 3. Trish Kocialski is the Associate in Physical Education at the State Education Department. Trish presented to us at our spring Executive Council meeting and discussed the issue of school districts being out of compliance with Commissioners Regulation You can access the regulation on our website at Please review the regulation and determine if your district is in compliance. 4. The PE Profile at the commencement level is about to be finalized!! We have a dynamic cross section of professionals from various school districts who will represent the Capital Zone as Turnkey Trainers. They are Fred Powers, Regan Johnson, Pat Seligman, JoAnn Sabourin, Bud Watson and Jay Laveroni. We will be working with BOCES to set up training dates for school districts in our Zone. 5. Thank you for being part of the Capital Zone and for supporting NYS AHPERD your professional organization! We wish for you a relaxing and fun-filled summer. Blessings, Janet Tully Kuzman and Lois Gerhardt

9 NYS AHPERD CAPITAL ZONE THE SANDRA G. MORLEY PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARDS PROGRAM FOR ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL From left: Program Coordinators Deb Wein Deb and Wein Colleen Mickle, Mistress of Ceremonies Sandy Morley and Colleen Mickle, Mistress of Ceremony, Sandy Morley Shenendehowa Color Guard Bob Oates the guest speaker On Monday evening, May 7th, the Sandra G. Morley Student Leadership Program celebrated its twenty-second year of honoring students for their leadership and positive influence on their peers. Each year we seem to be growing. Our new venue, the McDonough Sports Complex at Hudson Valley Community College, provided us with a beautifully set-up facility for us to honor our students. By moving the event to HVCC, we were able to offer a more central location for all the districts, ample parking, and so we thought, various routes to approach the facility. However, we did not plan on one small glitch, the propane tanker explosion. Although two major routes were blocked, which in turn delayed the start of the ceremony, the audience and students were most understanding. This year we presented certificates and t-shirts to a record number six hundred and eighty six honorees representing 104 schools and 37 school districts! Over two thousand spectators including teachers, parents, family members, and friends attended the event. As mistress of ceremonies, Sandy Morley, as always, was outstanding in orchestrating the evening. Her opening comments about the importance of taking the time out of our busy schedules to acknowledge our young leaders was well received by all who attended. As in the words of Dan Jansen, the Olympic speed skater, she reminded us to savor these moments of celebration and encouraged the award winners to continue being positive role models. The Shenendehowa Color Guard, under the direction of Mr. Scott Snell, was fabulous! Eleven middle and high school girls performed a phenomenal rifle throwing, flag twirling routine with precision, expertise and athleticism. The rousing routine performed to the tune of Van Halen s Jump was awe-inspiring! We were excited and pleased to have our own Bob Oates as the guest speaker. His home-spun stories of his heroes, his first boss, his father-in-law, and Abraham Lincoln provided us with the understanding of how leaders act. It is not what is said, or the title held, but the decisions to do what is right that makes a leader. A special thanks to our leader and mentor, Bob, for his continuing leadership and inspiration. Deb Wein presenting a certificate to an award winner Photos by Bob Collen The Sandra G. Morley Student Leadership Program is a success because of the number of Physical Educators from our zone who continue to show their commitment to our profession by nominating their students to receive leadership recognition and providing support at the ceremony. The program coordinators, Colleen Mickle and Deb Wein extend heartfelt thanks to all for your continued support.
