3 The Year 9 Options Process 19 th January: Year 9 into 10 Options evening 27 th January: Year 9 Parent consultations 20 th January 5 th February: Subject discussions 9 th February: Year 9 Tutor meetings 23 rd February: Students submit their completed options form. Summer term: Confirmation of subjects

4 What subjects are available? The compulsory subjects English Maths Science Physical Education (non-examined) PSHE (non-examined)

5 What subjects are available? Optional subjects 18 GCSE subjects 1 AS-Level 2 Cambridge National course You can only select subjects for Year 10 if you have been studying the subject in Year 9 They are all in the options booklet.

6 The vocational courses Cambridge National Business and Enterprise Cambridge National Creative I-Media Single options Taught at Leventhorpe Teacher assessed plus exams Courses run by external providers/colleges Construction, motor vehicle, hair and beauty Range of internal and external assessment Time out of school Impact on other subjects?

7 ICT Courses and AS-Level GCSE ICT or GCSE Computing I-Media Cambridge National Fast track AS Business Y9 assessments in English, Maths and Business predictions to be B+ or above. Interested in Business! New A levels AS result will no longer count as part of final A level grade

8 New GCSE s New GCSE s in English and Maths taken for the first time by current Year 10 Current Year 9 will have new GCSE s in all other subjects except Business Studies, Technology subjects, Sociology and ICT GCSE New grading system 1-9 Other GCSE s still graded A*-G

10 Make the right choice You are committing to two years of study What qualifications do you want/need? Will you have a balanced curriculum that will increase options for the future? Have you thought about Post-16 education/training (to age 18) Are you thinking about university? Think about subjects you ll enjoy and can succeed in

11 Do you need a balanced set of subjects? It is strongly recommended In 2010 a performance measure for comparing schools was introduced called the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) Mainly to address curriculum issues in schools where it was felt that there was a lack of breadth and balance. The EBacc is not a qualification, but a collection of subjects that is used as a measure for school performance It shifted the focus away from vocational qualifications

13 How does this affect Leventhorpe students? It doesn t really We already run a traditional, largely academic curriculum A small number of students study vocational subjects because it s right for them All students can choose an EBacc combination if they want to, but they don t have to.

14 What should you choose? 5 top tips 1. The subjects that are right for you 2. Aim for a broad, balanced curriculum 3. Play to your strengths 4. You have to have studied the subject in Year 9 5. Don t choose subjects based on your friends choices or teachers you like/don t like

19 The order of preference Don t try to play games Put the subject you most want to do first Cannot guarantee any choices but most get the subjects they choose You must select two reserves if you don t get your first four choices we will discuss this with you

20 The options form You will get it from your tutor on 9 th February Decide over half-term Return it no later than Tuesday 23 rd February We will let you know after Easter what you have been allocated If your chosen combination does not work, or we feel your choices are too narrow, we will discuss issues with you
