1 From the Principal's Desk Jim Laussen Welcome back to the College for all families, students and staff as we begin a new term. I trust that you have all had a delightful time over the three week break as you shared some special times with your families and friends. During the holidays, it was an honour for me to represent the College at the official launch of the new secondary school at Chibobo. Along with four of our teachers, 14 of our students and two members of the St Mary s Sunbury Parish, it was an immense privilege to be part of such an enormous community event for Chibobo. Our first group of students and teachers visited Chibobo in Since then there have been eight trips by Overnewton students and staff. Just over 100 Overnewton students have visited Chibobo in that time; the Chibobo community has changed each of those students and given them a joy and compassion that could only come from knowing the children and staff of the orphanage. In 2011, Staivous Malumba, the director of the orphanage, along with his wife Memory and daughter Emma, came to Melbourne. It was a delight to have them with us for a few weeks. I still remember sitting down to a meal in my home with them - and many of our staff who had been to Chibobo - and hearing Staivous talking with passion about the children of the village. He said to us that education is the key to the future of Chibobo and Zambia, and that it was especially important to provide a safe education for girls. He spoke to us about the difficulties faced by students who had finished Year 9 with no local secondary school and no ability to afford safe housing if they did manage to find a school for Year 10. Coming from a country where every child who wants a safe education is able to get one, we found this to be confronting. It was at that meeting that the seeds were sown to find members of the Overnewton community who would sponsor orphans to go to boarding school to finish their secondary education. It was humbling that we were able to so easily provide a secondary education for these children. Conversations that led to the idea to build the secondary school began during their visit too. From the time Overnewton first became partners with the people of Chibobo, it has always been our aim to help support that community to become self-sustaining. We did not see that sending money for food and clothes should be all we would do. We wanted to support the Chibobo community to have the ability to grow its own food and to have ways of making its own funds to support itself. In this way, we respected the people of Chibobo s dignity, their ability to care for themselves as well as their own self-worth. This continues to be our approach today and we love hearing about the activities they have in place - through farming and the women s craft group (the Koala club) - that generate a small but important income for the community. Similarly, with the Chibobo Secondary School, we have raised funds to build the rudimentary buildings and to finish them off. It is wonderful to see that this goal has been achieved and that now we can hand over the responsibility of the growth of the school to its community. It is now the responsibility of that community to find the best teachers

2 who are committed to working in a rural school, and to join together in building their school to be the great school it can be for the learners who come wanting to learn every day. As a gift from Overnewton, we gave the school a few notebook computers, as well as a printer for the production of learning materials and exams; something we take for granted but that they do not have. Our students carried with them a large number of stationery items donated from our community to the school and these were greatly appreciated too. Additionally, we have purchased some text books for the students to use so that they can be using books that support their new curriculum and prepare them well for their exams. They previously did not have access to textbooks for their students and could not afford to purchase them. Overnewton continues to be committed to supporting the children of Chibobo and we hope that our friendship is one that continues for many, many more years. Earlier this week, I attended the launch of the annual Independent Schools Victoria Student Art Exhibition. Housed in the foyer of Shell House, 1 Spring Street Melbourne, it was exciting to see Overnewton students work hung alongside the work of students from many other independent schools. This was indeed a proud moment for the students, their families and myself. The exhibition continues until August 31st and is well worth a visit. My thanks to our Visual Arts staff who have worked with the students and co-ordinated the submission of the artwork. On Wednesday 9th August, the annual College musical opens. This year we are performing How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which was performed on the New York stage recently with Daniel Radcliffe and one of the Jonas brothers in the lead roles. Every year the College musical is a fabulous production and I can assure you that this year s will be no different. May I wish you all a terrific term ahead.

Melton Highway Closure Melton Highway will be closed in both directions between McCubbin Drive and Overton Lea Boulevard from 8pm on Friday 28th July to 5am on Monday 31st July 2017 to allow for level crossing removal works. There will be detours in place to help drivers get to where they need to go. We recommend that anyone

4 participating or attending any events or sport that will be held in the school grounds over that weekend, allow extra travel time. Family Involvement Record Now on Parent Portal Did you know that you can check your Family Involvement Program hours record via the Parent Portal? Follow these simple steps: Go to the College website and click on Parent Portal. Click on the Family Details icon. When promoted enter your Family ID and Password. Then click on My Family. Finally click on Family Involvement Program, which appears on the left hand side of the screen (toward the bottom of the screen). You will then see the total hours recorded on a termly basis. It is important to note that hours will not be recorded on the portal until work group co-ordinators have submitted hours at the end of each term. Data entry is then normally completed during the term holidays, so records should be up to date early in the following term. 5 Reporting Absences via SMS The College uses an SMS messaging system to contact parents regarding their child s absence. If your child is marked absent and you have not reported this to the College, you will receive an SMS on your phone during the morning. When you receive the message on your mobile phone, the phone number may appear to be unfamiliar and will change periodically, but the message will begin with OACC Absence. If two parents in a family have a mobile phone number recorded on the school database, both will receive the message and one or both can reply with details of the reason for the absence. Your reply will be noted by the administration officer in your child s school. If you have any concerns, or wish to provide further details of your child s absence, you may still telephone the administration officer regarding your child s absence. Sibling Applications A reminder to Overnewton families Parents who have a child attending Overnewton College and are interested in obtaining a position for other siblings in their family should contact the Registrar, Diane King on and request an application form as soon as possible. Student Withdrawals from the College As part of the "Conditions of Entry" to Overnewton Anglican Community College, signed by all families upon confirmation of enrolment: One full term's written notice is required to withdraw a student from the College. If one full term's notice is not given to the College, one full term's fees will be charged. If you are able to provide more than one term's notice it would be greatly appreciated. Notifications should be sent to Mrs Diane King. Always Update Whispers Address via our Website The most efficient way for you to ensure that your details are updated immediately is to go to the College website and click on the Whispers icon at the top right-hand side of the page. This will take you to the most recently published issue.

6 Scroll down the page looking at the blue ribbon on the left-hand side until you come to the section in white that says, Stay up to date, Receive our newsletter by '. Click on subscribe, follow the prompts and submit your request. Your for the distribution of Whispers will be updated instantly, ensuring all future Whispers correspondence will be sent to that address. If you need to update your details at any stage, please follow the same steps but this time click 'Change '. If you have any further difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact Susan Bates. Working Bees - both Campuses Saturday 26th August Please note that the working bees commence at 8.30am and not before. Hours will only be credited after 8.30am. The day will finish at 4.30pm. Please stay as long as possible so that the tasks organised for the day can be completed. The working bees will cover minor projects, gardening and general clean up. Please bring along your own gloves and sunscreen. Morning and afternoon teas are provided. Lunch: $5. No open shoes such as sandals or thongs are to be worn at any working bees at the College. Please note that children are not permitted to attend working bees. Other family members are also not permitted to attend working bees on behalf of parents/guardians. 7 Head of Keilor Campus Rob Huntington Welcome Back to Term 3 I trust all students and their families have had a good break and are ready for a busy Term 3. The College Musical How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying, winter sport finals and the cross country championship, are some of the major events in the coming weeks. A number of staff changes have taken place over the break at Keilor Campus. Delma Wotherspoon and Tim Jezard both return from leave as Head of Learning Support and Development and Head of Student Services respectively. Jan Jolley returns as Head of Middle School and I will be Acting Head of Senior School for Semester 2 following Nicholas de Dear s departure at the end of Term 2. This is additional to my Head of Campus role so, in the event that you need to contact me, please let reception staff know whether it is in relation to Senior School or wider Campus matters. I also welcome three new staff to the College. Irena Sugarevski takes up a teaching position in Junior School, Andrew Prince joins the Visual Arts staff, and Louie Trajcevski has joined the sports team. Founder s Day Services Our students and Chaplains did a tremendous job developing services that suitably acknowledged the 30th anniversary of the College. The music was superb and a great highlight of the day. The Solid Rock performance, involving students, staff and College parent, Scott Darlow, combined the various ensembles into a very powerful and beautiful item. The other music items were also most impressive and were the culmination of a term full of musicality. The services were a great way to end Term 2 and made me very proud of the College. Saturday s Working Bee A small number of parents were in attendance at the working bee on Saturday and did a good job finishing the retaining wall outside the Visual Arts building, as well as creating a new path outside the Junior School building, as shown below, that students will greatly appreciate. The co-ordinators were very pleased by the parents that helped with catering.

9 Head of Taylors Lakes Campus Gabe Alessandrini Term 2 Welcome to Term 3. I hope that all of the students and their families had an enjoyable break and are rested and refreshed, ready for lots of learning. We welcome back Leonie Murray, Judith Raisbeck, Tim Jezard and Tim Mahon from their long service leave. We also welcome Maria Muse to the Campus as the Acting Head of Library. Maria will be in the library two days per week to oversee it operations, as well as take some classes. It is great to have Maria with us until Christine Wilson returns from leave. During the break a lot of the usual cyclic maintenance tasks were completed, including detailed cleaning and painting. Uniform Term 3 continues to be winter uniform time for Junior School and Middle School. The College Shop at the Keilor Campus will have all uniform items should you still require them. Orders for some uniform items can be placed at the Taylors Lakes Campus reception. All details regarding student uniform can be found in the student diaries. Car Park and Drop-off/Pick-up Zone Procedures Dropping off students at the start of the day and picking them up at the end of the day are very busy times. It is timely at the beginning of the term to remind families of the procedures for dropping off and picking up students at the beginning and end of the school day. (See car park map below). These procedures are designed to make the dropping off and picking up of students as efficient and, most importantly, as safe as possible. It does rely greatly on the co-operation, patience and understanding of all drivers who use the drop-off/pick-up zone. For families that prefer to park their vehicles and accompany their children to their classrooms in the morning or wait for them at the end of the day, there are several car parking spaces in the main Campus car park or alternatively, across the road in the council car park at the soccer club. Families that prefer to drop off their children in the morning and pick them up at the end of the day without having to park their vehicles can use the drop-off/pick-up zone. This area is designed for vehicles to pull in for a short period of time (3 minutes maximum) and either drop-off or pick-up children, and then pull out again into the main traffic flow through the car park. The drop-off/pick-up zone is not meant to be an area for vehicles to park and wait for children to arrive

10 . As we all know, children can sometimes take a while to get from their classroom to the drop-off/pick-up zone at the end of the day, so parking and waiting will only cause congestion within the car park, which then spills out onto Robertsons Road. If your child is not at the drop-off/pick-up zone when you arrive, simply do another circuit of the car park. This will keep traffic flowing. Please respect the four disabled parking spaces and leave them for the members of our College community that have permits to park in those spots. Also, please do not use the staff car parking area to drop off and pick up students. In all of this, the safety of the students is of utmost importance.

11 Heads of Junior School Anne McNaughton Tracy Fielder Welcome to Term 3 Following article written by Anne McNaughton and Tracy Fielder, Heads of Junior School, Keilor Campus and Taylors Lakes Campus A warm welcome back to Term 3 is extended to Junior School families. Parents are encouraged to read Whispers each week as the articles summarise the learning and significant events that have taken place in the Junior School. The weekly sent to families also gives a brief synopsis of the learning that will be undertaken in the following week. This term the following central ideas will be explored through the units of inquiry in each year level: Prep: The past influences how families live today. Year 1: People have played throughout time. Year 2: The history of local communities shape what they are today. Year 3: There are many systems involved in the production, supply and distribution of food. Year 4: Earth s changes have an impact on human survival. The understandings that are developed through these units will be outlined via the weekly communication and parents may be asked to support their children in the collection of related artifacts or information. We look forward to another productive term and the continued home-school partnerships. Year 3 CERES Excursion Following article written by Natalie Miller, Year 3 teacher, Junior School, Keilor Campus During the second half of Semester 1, Year 3 students explored the unit of inquiry focused on investigating the central idea; The choices we make affect the environment. Their learning involved research and investigations about Reduce, Re-use, Recycle and took place during regular classes, as well as during Mandarin sessions. During the last week of Term 2, the Year 3 students attended an excursion to CERES Community Environment Park located in Brunswick. This was a great opportunity to inquire further into the cross curricular learning unit. The students took part in four great hands-on learning activities: Waste Timeline, Worm Farms, Paper Making and Food Waste. It was a most informative opportunity to learn about landfills and how long products take to disintegrate. The students learnt how to make their own paper and the importance of worms and mini-beasts in the environment.

12 Even though the weather was cool and showery, it did not dampen the excitement and enthusiasm that the students showed, and the fantastic learning that took place. 15 Heads of Middle School Jan Jolley Tim Mahon Middle School Start to Semester 2 The Middle School has enjoyed a smooth beginning to Term 3 and Semester 2 for The students have moved seamlessly back into the routines of Middle School, ensuring immediate and successful use of their learning time. We look forward to working closely with families and again encourage open communication between parents, students and teachers to ensure each student's success. If you have anything you would like to discuss, your first point of call is always the individual subject teacher or the Home Group teacher then the Deputy Heads of School and the Head of School. Parent/Teacher Interviews Middle School Parent/Teacher interviews will be held on Monday 31st July and Thursday 3rd August after school. The College will continue to use the process of online school interview bookings, which allows families to select suitable times. Families will receive specific instructions about the booking process shortly. Please refer to the App4 diary to find a list of your child s teachers. 16 Head of Canowindra Derek Summerton Students to Reflect on their Progress As Semester 2 commences, it is an appropriate time for students to reflect on the goals they set on Goal Setting Day. During It s a W.R.A.P., students have been involved in completing their mid-year goal reflections, which gets them to think critically about their approach to learning so far this year. Students consider what they have done to achieve their goals and gather evidence to support this. Alternatively if there are goals they have not reached, they are to consider what has hindered this development and to set a new plan for their achievement in Semester 2. Careers Expo Thursday 27th July, 6.30pm-9pm This is an important event for Canowindra students and is being held at Senior School on Thursday night. It is a great opportunity for students to speak to people involved in careers they may be interested in, or even discover a new pathway they hadn t considered before. It is very helpful in assisting students with decision making around pathways through Senior School and beyond. 23 Acting Head of Senior School Rob Huntington Welcome Back to Term 3 I hope all Senior School students and their families have enjoyed their break. As you will already be aware, I am acting in the role of Head of Senior School for the rest of 2017 following the departure of Nicholas de Dear. I thank Mr. de Dear for his work at the College over the last 18 months and wish him well for the future. Many of his initiatives have either made differences to the Senior School or are continuing to be implemented, and I have appreciated the way in which he has enabled my transition into the role to be as smooth as possible. I look forward to working closely with Senior School students, staff and parents in this capacity over the coming months. I certainly wasn t anticipating that my first task would be advising Year 11 families about the change of date for the Presentation Ball during the term break. This change - due to the venue operators - has caused considerable logistical rearrangements for the College and for families, and has been a cause of significant angst for many people. I have met with the Ball Committee this week and tickets will be released for sale soon. I welcome back Jo Lamont who has been on leave in Term 2 and will resume taking accounting classes. Ian Francis is on leave for the first part of the term and Ruby Koomen will be taking his classes in his absence. Drew Mason and Heather Clarke have stepped in to take classes resulting from Mr. de Dear s departure, which is also appreciated. The tour to Zambia was a great success and I look forward to hearing more about this at next week s assembly. To begin Term 3, your child s mentor has sent you an about a range of matters, including those related to uniform, punctuality and the general work environment of Senior School. As indicated in the , parents are reminded that: All students need to be at school by 8.40am, in mentor rooms by 8.45am and marked present. If you know your child will be absent or late, please contact the Senior School administrative staff by calling or via . Students arriving after 8.55am must sign in at the Senior School office. An SMS will be sent to parents/guardians if they haven t signed in and there has been no parental contact. You should not contact your child s phone during class time. If there is an urgent need to contact your child during class time, please call or and we will organise a message. Calls between 10.30am10.45am, between 1.10pm-1.50pm, or after 3.35pm, will not affect scheduled classes. This promises to be an exciting term. Rehearsals for the College Musical How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying - and the Year 11 Presentation Ball are well underway and many Senior School teams are likely to reach the winter season sport finals. It is a busy term for work and assessment, so all students should be busy with homework tasks each week. Parent teacher interviews will be held on Tuesday 15th and Thursday 17th August.

24 Youth Parliament Team Six Senior School students visited State Parliament in Spring Street during the holidays, as part of the nine-day Youth Parliament of Victoria program, where they debated issues and ideas they were passionate about. The students presented a bill focusing on improving services to transgender and gender diverse Victorians, which was successfully passed by the Victorian Youth Parliament. All bills that are passed by the Youth Parliament are given the assent of the Youth Governor and were handed to Youth Affairs Minister, Jenny Mikakos, who will then pass them to the relevant ministers for consideration. The Star Weekly newspaper has published an article about the Youth Parliament that can be found using the following link. Parent Assistance Required - Year 11 Presentation Ball Supervision Saturday 16th September Parent help is required to assist with supervision of students at the Year 11 Presentation Ball on Saturday 16th September at the Celebrity Room, Moonee Valley Racecourse. Thank you to the parents who have already offered assistance. We now only require an additional 2 parents to supervise from 7.30pm until 12am. 25 Head of Student Services Tim Jezard Anxiety in School Children Anxiety continues to rise in society, amongst both children and adults, and this is reflected in our own population here at Overnewton. We have published articles on anxiety in the past - and will continue to do so - as one of the ways we can help families to support their children is to acknowledge anxiety's existence and to find appropriate ways to manage it. It is important to remember that we all experience anxiety, nervousness or worry from time to time, but it is only a problem when it interferes with our lives and prevents us from doing something. Should you or your child be experiencing the symptoms of anxiety, please do not hesitate to get in touch with myself or any of the College counsellors. Anxiety in Primary School Kids Anxiety in Secondary School Kids Parent Education Evening: Successfully Addressing Student Motivation Monday 14th August, 7pm-8.30pm On Monday 14th August, Professor Andrew Martin from the University of Sydney will be visiting Overnewton to speak with staff and parents on how best to support student engagement, achievement and motivation. Andrew is Australia's foremost expert in student motivation and has written numerous books and articles on such matters, as well as on boys' education, gifted and talented, academic resilience and teacher-student relationships to name a few. Maintaining motivation is often a struggle throughout the academic journey, not only for students, but sometimes for parents as well.

28 Lessons are held during the normal College day. Where possible, lessons are rotated on a weekly basis to ensure students do not miss the same class each week. This will be arranged with the instrumental teacher in consultation with staff, students and parents. Should you require lessons outside of the school day, these times are only available at the discretion of the instrumental teacher. The College does not keep a waiting list of students who prefer lessons outside of the school day. In some instances there are limited places with some instruments and your enrolment may be placed on a waiting list. Should this happen, parents would be advised when a position becomes available. Students are required to commit to lessons for a minimum of two terms. Lessons that are discontinued once the term has begun are not refundable. Withdrawal from Lessons If you choose to withdraw your child from private instrumental, voice or theory lessons, an Overnewton College Private Music Lesson Withdrawal Form must have been completed and submitted to Tania Riotto. Withdrawal is only finalised when this form has been received. In line with the College "Conditions of Entry", one full term's written notice is required to withdraw a student from the Private Instrumental, Voice and Theory Program. Should you have any queries on the Private Instrumental, Voice and Theory program, please contact either Tania Riotto or George Katisikas Encore Instrumental Music Ensembles All Encore instrumental music ensemble and vocal group rehearsals are held each week and, where needed for particular events, extra rehearsals may be scheduled. It is not too late for students to join one of the many ensembles at the College. The choirs and vocal groups are open to students from Years 1 to 12. For current Year 7 students who wish to keep playing their band instrument, the Middle School Band is a great way to stay involved. The Senior Band is open to students from Years 9 to 12 and selected Middle School students. This year also sees the Rock Band Program being offered to Middle School students on both campuses. Participating in an ensemble provides an excellent opportunity for young people to develop teamwork skills, group discipline and commitment. It also is a great way of fostering a lifelong passion for music-making and participating in exciting performance opportunities. Students choosing to participate in an ensemble are required to attend all performances, at least 80% of rehearsals, commit to learning their individual parts, and actively contribute to the success and growth of the group. 29 Visual Arts Keilor Campus Taylors Lakes Campus Safety in Design and Technology Following article written by Franca Petrolo, Middle School Design and Technology teacher, Taylors Lakes Campus The Design and Technology classroom is physically unlike any other learning space within the College. Before a student can work in this space, they are required to show an understanding of basic health and safety requirements. These rules will keep themselves and others safe in this environment. In this learning area, students are expected to design and safely produce solutions for a range of technology contexts. From Year 5, students are introduced to the safety requirements of using hand tools and machinery, communication, moving in and around the room, and the safety of themselves and others. As students progress through Design and Technology, teachers expand on these understandings and introduce further safety requirements. Students are introduced to more complex and age appropriate machinery as they move from Middle School to Canowindra, and then into Product Design and Technology at Senior School. Carrying out risk assessments to identify hazards is an important part of the safety process. Students identify hazards and quantify them by classing the hazard as high, medium or low risk. These assessments are often completed on Stile and on the On Guard Safety Training website. Personal protective equipment (P.P.E) is a compulsory part of the Design and Technology workshop. Students are required to provide an apron, dust mask and safety glasses at the beginning of each year to use in every class. Earmuffs, face masks and other more specific protective equipment can be found in each workshop space. The safety training provided by the Design and Technology staff should ensure that students feel confident in the safe use of hand tools and machines and that they can operate them without having an accident or causing an accident to others.

34 Sport Activate Year 7 to 12 House Cross Country On the last week of Term 2, our Year 7-12 students ran 3km, 4km and 5km courses at Brimbank Park. Points were awarded to the top place-getters and every student earned a point for their participation. Some students will be invited to join representative cross country training opportunities in preparation for the ACS Championships on Monday 21st August. The girls were winning throughout the game until the last quarter and ended up missing out on the win by only a few goals. The team did everything right and played exceptionally well, which makes them winners to us! We are very proud of their efforts. In Term 1 and 2, two Year 9 students, Rochelle Saad and Elizabeth Bogve, completed their community service placement with the team. We cannot thank Rochelle and Elizabeth enough for teaching the girls some great new drills, that were very effective and improved the skills of our Year 5 netballers. It also provides dates and details of upcoming social and fundraising activities. Family Involvement Record Now on Parent Portal Did you know that you can check your Family Involvement Program hours record via the Parent Portal? Follow these simple steps: Go to the College website and click on Parent Portal. Click on the Family Details icon. When promoted enter your Family ID and Password. Then click on My Family. Finally click on Family Involvement Program, which appears on the left hand side of the screen (toward the bottom of the screen). You will then see the total hours recorded on a termly basis. It is important to note that hours will not be recorded on the portal until work group co-ordinators have submitted hours at the end of each term. Data entry is then normally completed during the term holidays, so records should be up to date early in the following term.
