3 The GSAPP Gazette Weekly Newsletter - Page 3 ALUMNI NOTE OF INTEREST Rosalind Dorlen, 1977 Clinical Psychology graduate and Peterson Prize winner was interviewed by CNN on Monday, October 6th. The segment will air this Saturday, October 11th at 9:30am and 3:30pm and again on Sunday, October 12th at 3:30pm. The topic is stress and the economy. COLLOQUIUM Dr. Jerry Berlin Part-Time Lecturer / Organizational Psychology Program My Personal and Professional Relationship with Carl Rogers October 29, :15 1:30 Room A317 Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology Jerry Berlin worked with Carl R. Rogers for six years at both the University of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin, and received his Ph.D. from the former institution in Early in his career as a clinician, he became interested in applying emerging psychotherapeutic principles to the development of organizations and communities. Since then, he has consulted with a wide range of institutions ranging from large public corporations and federal agencies to smaller, more unique, institutions, even including a Trappist monastery. Because of his training and experience as an aviator, Jerry has often consulted within the aerospace industry. He is best known for having developed the Cockpit Resource Management programs now in use by the major air carriers and the U S Air Force. During the decade of the seventies he taught at the University of Haifa and served as a full time officer in the Israel Air Force. Dr. Berlin maintains an interest in teaching and training young psychologists and presently holds an appointment as a part time lecturer at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology of Rutgers University. CANDIDATE FOR THE SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY FACULTY POSITION T. Chris Riley-Tillman, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, East Carolina University Direct Behavior Ratings: The New Emerging Alternative November 5th, :15 1:30 pm Room A317 Graduate School of Applied and Applied Psychology This presentation overviews a comprehensive research program which is focused on the development and validation of Direct Behavior Ratings (DBR) for use as a social behavior formative assessment methodology. The defining characteristics of DBR include the directness of observation, the observation of specific behaviors, and an evaluative component of ratings. DBR instrumentation and procedures combine the benefits of both behavior rating scales (i.e., efficient data recording) and systematic direct observation (i.e., data recording that occurs at the same time and place of behavior).

The Unique Benefits of and Resistances to Group Treatment David Panzer, Psy.D., Brett Kociol and Ben Mueller The following topics will be covered in the presentation, using helpful case examples: **The ways in which groups afford clients unique experiential opportunities **The ways in which groups can enhance individual treatment **The anxieties associated with group membership and referral Dr. David Panzer is Director of Services at Group Psychotherapy Services and is a Contributing Faculty Member at GSAPP, Rutgers University. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at RWJUH Medical School and is a former President of both NJPA and NJ Group Psychotherapy Society. Dr. Panzer has a private practice in Highland Park. Brett Kociol and Ben Mueller are advanced doctoral candidates in clinical psychology at GSAPP, Rutgers University. They are Coordinators of Services at GSAPP s Group Psychotherapy Services, which Brett co-founded. Brett s research involves the exploration of anti-group bias as it relates to attachment theory, while Ben s research focuses on mandated group treatment in a university setting. The goals of Group Psychotherapy Services at GSAPP are to provide Psy.D. and Ph.D. candidates at Rutgers Univ. extensive training opportunities in many different facets of group treatment, to offer highquality and low-cost group treatment options to the local community and to service as a resource to area clinicians to enhance individual treatment that they already offer.
