Induction on the MSc for all part-time students begins at 9:30 on Wednesday 2 nd October Please meet at the seating area by the reception of the School of Life and Medical Sciences Office, room F262 in the Wright Building on the College Lane Campus. At Induction you will receive your Student Handbook, which gives useful information about the MSc and studying at the University. Full-time and part-time students are to attend the first module short course Sustainability and Environmental Systems from 09:00 to 17:00 on Thursday 3 rd, Friday 4 th and Saturday 5 th October Refreshments and a buffet lunch are provided during Induction and short courses. If you have any particular dietary requirements, please let us know in advance of Induction. Please note the registration information tells you what you need to bring with you. 3 Dear Environmental Management Student Welcome to the University of Hertfordshire and in particular to the Department of Human and Environmental Science, which is in the School of Life and Medical Sciences. By choosing to study for an award at the University of Hertfordshire you have committed yourself to a programme of study that can help you reach your full potential as a learner as well as preparing you to take on the responsibilities of an environmental manager. At the end of each semester you will be asked to complete a Student Feedback Questionnaire for each module, which asks you to indicate a score on specific categories regarding the School and the topics studied. The University prioritises student feedback and it is vital to us if we are to continue to meet your ongoing needs and those of students in the future. The University of Hertfordshire is a major institution of higher education with over 20,000 students and provides a whole range of facilities and supports a number of activities for your benefit including cultural and sporting. At first, finding your way around the University and your Programme may seem daunting, but there are many people at the University who are here to assist and advise you. If you need help you can always contact your Programme Tutor, Personal Tutor, Programme Administrator, and Module Leaders, whose job it is to mentor you and assist with your learning. Don t worry about the terminology and various roles; you will soon catch-on. So, please do not hesitate to contact a member of staff if you have any queries. Two specialist modules are compulsory for each Pathway, e.g. Water and Environmental Management

5 (WEM), except for the general Pathway, i.e. MSc Environmental Management, which has more choice. Each student s programme of study will be discussed and agreed with the Programme Tutor. The above dates are subject to change and you should check them with the Programme Tutor. A and B indicate the Semester start dates; students attend one of these short courses depending on when they commence their studies. Short courses are compulsory for all students. They take place on Friday and Saturday except for some which are three days and therefore also include a Thursday. Assignments are normally completed in the eight to ten weeks following the short course. Most modules have between two and four tutorials in the eight weeks following the short courses, which are compulsory for full-time students and optional for part-time students. A full timetable will be given at the start of the course.
