[COURSE DESCRIPTION]: French 1 is an introduction to the French language and culture. The fundamentals of French pronunciation, grammar, and culture will be taught through a gradual development of four important language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. To enhance these skills, French 1 will be taught through a variety of activities such as group/pair work, video, audio recordings, computer assignments, group projects, etc. French 1 is designed for students with little or no knowledge of French language or culture. Students are expected to give their best effort in each class. In order to give their best, students will be expected to come to class prepared and ready to learn. [MATERIALS]: All students will bring the following learning materials to class: 2 separate composition notebooks 1 Folder for handouts Pencils, colored pens or highlighters [CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS]: HS3 C.A.R.E.S. - Collaboration Accountability Respect Excellence Safety The rules of HS3 will be applied to all members of our learning community. Students will Arrive to class on time and be prepared for learning with all materials and assignments at hand. This includes joining the meeting area promptly with your notebook, binder and a working pen or sharpened pencil. Put forth their best effort, even when the objective of the class may seem too difficult, too boring or too easy. Be respectful and be compassionate to every member of the French class and HS3 community. Make sure all electronics are turned off and put away in a safe place. Check in with Mme FERNANDEZ when absent to make up missed assignments, classwork, and tests. [GRADING POLICY: How will I show that I understand the material?]: Students grades will be determined by their performance on different learning standards throughout each lesson and unit. Students will demonstrate their knowledge on each standard by various (e.g. quizzes, unit tests, listening and speaking tests, culminating projects, binder/notebook checks, and final

2 ). Students must MEET each learning standard in order to pass French One. Students will be held accountability for all learning material given in class. GRADING SCALE - The assessment criteria are: Exceeding 4 Perfect execution of the skill or demonstration of the knowledge Meeting 3 Errors are present, but the correct process is evident Approaching 2 There is some evidence of the skill, but fundamental errors Beginning 1 An attempt was made Example: Standard Level of Proficiency Grade Point I can greet and meet people in French. It will be likely that many students will need another opportunity to reassess certain learning objectives. Many students learn at a different pace and it will be helpful to reassess these learning objectives should you receive a beginning or approaching standard (1 or 2). Should you choose to reassess, there will be Reassessment forms for students to fill. Students must fill out a reassessment form in order to reassess. This will be an opportunity for students to reflect on what needs to be learned, how one can prepare for the reassessment, and when students will reassess. These forms will be available in the classroom by the door.

3 The following process of reassessing will go as follows: 1. Complete the reassessment form 2. Schedule a time to reassess the learning standard 3. Once approved, student will arrive to class ALONE (please refrain from bringing friends as they tend to be a big distraction) and AFTER SCHOOL to get extra help in addition to completing test corrections. 4. Students must complete their reassessment within two-weeks from the time Mme F returned graded quizzes/tests. *Please make sure to do the necessary preparation before reassessing. Mme F may give you extra work if needed before reassessing. *IF YOU CANNOT MAKE THE SCHEDULED TIME/DATE, please contact me via (genevieve.fernandez@highlineschools.org) or phone ( ) if you cannot make it. PROGRESS REPORTS- Grades will be available online on Edline for all student. Progress Reports will be printed at mid-quarter and quarter. Standards based grading will be converted to traditional letter grades at the end of the semester. LATE WORK/PROJECT EXTENSION- Periodically, a culminating project will be assigned to the class. A due date will be given. If you cannot turn in the assignment/project for a certain reason, please fill out the Late Work/Project Extension Request form located by the door. I will approve or deny based on the reasons stated on the request. ACADEMIC HONESTY- It is very important that each student turn in his or her OWN WORK. If the work you turn in is NOT YOUR OWN WORK, you are at risk of NOT RECEIVING CREDIT for your work. ATTENDANCE- Please read the attendance policy of HS3 If you are absent, it is your sole responsibility to make up any missing classwork. Please arrange a time to make up work. Once again, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILTY. If you need to make up a test due to ABSENCES, please do so in a timely manner. Again, please come see me to arrange a time. If you need more time, it is your responsibility to communicate what the circumstances are. TARDIES- Don t be tardy to the party! If you are late to class, you will fill out a TARDY SLIP located by the door. Students will follow the HS3 attendance and tardy policy in their planner (p.11) CLASS SUPPORT- HS3 built in Tutorial Time in the morning, 7:25am 8:00am, for students in need of extra help, tutoring, homework help and studying. Please come see me during the scheduled FRENCH HELP on the tutorial schedule, or see me during my OFFICE HOURS: Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 3:30pm. COURSE OBJECTIVE The goals of this course are to: I. Communicate in the target language II. Gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures III. Connect with other disciplines and acquire information IV. Develop insight into the nature of language and culture V. Participate in multicultural communities at home and around the world

4 COURSE GOAL By the end of the school year, students will be able to -Understand main ideas from each unit when listening and reading in French -Ask and answer simple questions. - Discuss topics of personal interest (likes and dislikes) orally and in writing. -Initiate and respond to request and commands. -Extend, accept, and reject invitations simple invitations. -Exchange descriptive information. COURSE TEXTBOOK A textbook and workbook will be assigned to each student. Students will be responsible that textbook and workbook throughout the school year. Textbooks need to be brought to class every day and brought home to aid students in doing their homework. 5 Students will agree to the following classroom rules of conduct. FRENCH CLASS CONTRACT CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS (Please refer to the Student Handbook for more details) GOLDEN RULE: Treat others as you want to be treated. 1. Be Prompt- It is essential that every student attend all classes on a regular basis. If you are more than 10 minutes late to this class, you are to: -Have everything you need to be prepared (e.g. pen/pencil, binder, books, etc.) -Complete the tardy slip located by the door. THREE TARDIES will convert into a DETENTION. So please, please, please don t be late. If you arrive late to class, please fill out the tardy form by the door and leave it on my desk. *For more information, please read the attendance policy of HS3* 2. Be Prepared- At the beginning of each class, please have out: -Pen or pencil -Notebooks -Textbook -Be mentally and physically ready to learn. 3. Be Positive- Please be in your assigned seat. Read the daily agenda for the day. Check the doc camera or white board for the réveil (entry task). When taking notes and doing class work, please do so quietly. Try to speak in French as much as possible. 4. Be Polite- Show respectful behavior and language with the teacher, your classmates, and care for the learning environment. If you must use the restroom, please present your planner with the date and destination recorded for the teacher s permission and signature. All students will be given 3 bathroom passes per quarter. At the end of class, please make sure your table and surrounding area is neat!! Please wait quietly for final announcements and dismissal. 5. Be Productive- Every student will participate in classroom activities; take responsibility for their own learning, and ask for help when needed. The teacher will be available during scheduled tutorial time and after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-3:30pm. Adhere to the Student Code of Conduct as described in the planner, PARTICULARLY: HS3 C.A.R.E.S. Classroom Expectations 1. Help keep learning environment clean by throwing away your trash or trash that you see. 2. Keep electronics away so that you or your students will not be distracted in learning.
