1 CLASSROOM PROCEDURES FOR MRS. BURNSED S 7 TH GRADE SCIENCE CLASS PRIDE + RESPONSIBILTY + RESPECT = APRENDE
2 Welcome to 7 th grade Important facts for Parents and Students about my classroom policies Classroom motto: MAXIMUM EFFORT = MAXIMUM REWARD I believe these are words to live by not only in the classroom, but in our everyday lives. I do not ask anything more from you than your ABSOLUTE best. I do have VERY HIGH expectations for my students pertaining to quality of work, participation and behavior. 5 B S OF SUCCESS 1. Be on time 2. Be on task 3. Be prepared 4. Be respectful 5. Be responsible If you follow the 5 B s of Success we will have a great year! Entering the classroom: 1) Do not walk in, unless I am at the door. We will greet each other when you walk in. 2) Take your seat quietly. 3) Take out your notebook, homework and begin working on bell work. 4) *You are considered late if you are not inside the classroom and in your assigned seat when the bell rings! (Unless you have a valid pass). Using the Bathroom: 1) PLEASE USE THE RESTROOM BEFORE YOU ENTER MY CLASSROOM!!! 2) In the event that you have an emergency and must use the restroom, please try and wait for a time when I am not teaching. a. Bad times to ask: i. While I am teaching ii. While we are taking notes iii. During group activities 3) Once I have approved, I will mark your bathroom pass, you must signout in the book and sign-back in when you return. 4) Return to your seat without disturbing others. Agendas/Planners: Please help your student remember and use the school agenda each day. The students will be given time at the beginning of class on Monday to copy the agenda for the week from the overhead projection system and the weekly agenda will be posted on my website and the board in the classroom. Students are expected to make any announced changes to their agendas.
3 Homework/Assignments: 1. All homework/assignments are to be completed and turned in on the assigned DUE date. 2. Even though I do not appreciate late work, I do accept it for it shows student completion of work. I do, however, take 10% of your earned grade off of the total point value. 3. Use the correct heading on your paper. 4. Begin writing with the holes on the left side of the paper and write between the margins. 5. I ask students to complete all assignments using either pencil or a blue or black pen. If the assignment is too difficult to read, the student will be able to re-do the assignment and I will take 10% of your earned grade off of the total point value. 6. Do your personal best when completing your work. ***Failure is NOT an option! Absences: If a student is absent, they are responsible for checking my website to see what they missed and getting the information they missed from their lab partners when they return. Students have 1 day for each day absent to make up assignments if the student will be out for a long time, please call the office and request their homework. Allow 24 hours for teachers to respond before coming to pick up requested work. Students will be doing Science activities each day and because one activity leads to next it is necessary for students to be present every day. Students will not be able to make-up the labs they have missed, and may be given an alternative assignment to complete. Some activities can be completed from home via the internet. I will place the information for these assignments on my website or in Parent/Student Vue for the students to access. If it is possible for the student to complete the activity at home and bring the information with them when they return, they will not be lost when they return to class. Tardiness: As per the Aprende Tardy Policy the consequences for tardiness are as follows: ***The tardy policy restarts each quarter.*** 1 st tardy: warning by teacher 2 nd tardy: parent contacted by teacher 3 rd tardy: teacher assigns after school detention to student 4 th tardy: teacher writes a Conduct Referral Report 5 th tardy and all subsequent tardies for the quarter result in a Conduct Referral. Sharpening Pencils: 1. Pencils need to be sharpened BEFORE class has begun! (Mechanical pencils are much easier!!!!) 2. Raise your hand to get permission. 3. One person at a time. 4. Always have two sharpened pencils with you at all times or a mechanical pencil with back up lead.
4 GUM/CANDY: 1. ABSOLUTELY NO GUM ALLOWED ON CAMPUS! Chewing gum in class will result in an immediate ISI Teacher s Talk Time: 1. Work materials are ready (pencil, paper, books, etc.) 2. Use ACTIVE LISTENING skills. 3. Take Notes!!! Everything I write on the board you must copy into your notes!!! 4. Remain seated, unless otherwise instructed. 5. Be prepared to discuss the materials being presented. Active listening/ Give me Five When you hear Active Listening or Give Me Five follow these important steps: 1. Give your FULL ATTENTION to the teacher or the person asking for Active Listening/Give me Five. 2. Use EYE CONTACT with the person who is speaking to you. 3. NO TALKING when someone else is speaking. 4. CONCENTRATE on what is being said. If You Finish Your Work Early 1. You MUST check your work for errors! 2. You may read a book. 3. If you would like to borrow a book or magazine from my library you must: a. Ask for permission from the teacher. b. Find a magazine or book in 1 minute or less. c. Return the magazine or book where you found it once class is over. *You must have something to do. You may not choose to do nothing. Fire Drills: 1. Students will Stop, Drop (their materials) and Listen. 2. Remain quiet and follow directions. 3. In a single file line, exit the building without talking. 4. Students will walk QUICKLY and QUIETLY to the field once directed to do so by the teacher. 5. Students will remain QUIET during the entire fire drill. ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING! Talking will result in an automatic referral. Partner/Group Time: 1. Stay with partner/group. 2. Use Library Voice. 3. Be an active listener and participant. (Everyone has valuable information to share)
5 4. Work COOPERATIVELY to complete an activity. 5. NO PUT DOWNS!!!! 6. Ask 3 before me (you can learn a lot from one another). 7. Clean area together: a. Return all materials neatly and the way you found them. b. Return to assigned seat quietly and be ready for the next task. 8. Be courteous: Remember to say please and thank you to your partner(s). Clean Up/Dismissal: 1. Five minutes before class is over, we will: a. Clean up the area. b. Return resources and materials to their appropriate places. c. Put trash in garbage cans and paper in RECYCLE bin. 2. Gather all items you will need to complete your homework. 3. Students will wait to be dismissed by the teacher. *THE BELL DOES NOT DISMISS YOU! I DISMISS YOU! Walking on Campus (As a Class): 1. If we should need to walk anywhere on campus, students are expected to: a. Walk in one line. b. ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING OR GOOFING AROUND! (There are other classrooms in session and we do not want to disturb them)! 2. Listen to directions that the teacher is giving. Drinks in the Classroom: 1. Water bottles only are welcome in my classroom! Please make sure that you fill them before class. Guest Teacher: If and when I am absent, you will have a substitute teacher: 1. You are expected to BEHAVE BETTER than when I am here. I will not accept any problems while there is a substitute or guest in the classroom. 2. You will treat the substitute with RESPECT and show him/her how we always do our PERSONAL BEST and practice pride, respect and responsibility. 3. Show your substitute how we work together each day. Be sure to remember what you do while the substitute is here reflects on our class, your teachers, and your school. 4. Be sure to set a positive example. Do the Crime Pay the Time If you choose to make a poor behavioral decision at any time in class First Time: Verbal Warning Second Time: Yellow Card placed on Desk. This means you can choose to correct your behavior. If in a lab, the student will return to their seat for a 5 minute time-out.
6 Third Time: Red Card placed on Desk. This means you will be sent out of the classroom to the ISI room to complete your work. **In extreme situations, Students who are a total interruption of the learning environment will automatically be sent out of the classroom! Depending on the behavior, the student may receive a Conduct Referral. If a student is making poor behavior choices during labs regularly, they may lose lab privileges and be asked to complete alternative assignments. Because I believe parents and teachers must work together to help students succeed, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. daburns@kyrene.org (preferred method) or phone: I have gone over all of these procedures with your child in class and have given time for questions. After the first week of school, each student is expected to know all classroom procedures. Please take the time to go over these procedures with your child. Print out this sheet, fill it out and send it with your child by Friday, August 10 th, Thank you and I look forward to a fantastic year.
