2 PBIS Virtue Chart All teachers will be required to use the same chart in all grade levels and classes. Each student will begin with a 10 at the beginning of the day and lose a point for not showing virtuous behavior. One warning will be given per day. A virtue point cannot be taken for incomplete homework or not having the planner signed. Only 2 points can be taken during a subject time. For example: In lower grades the teacher can only take 2 points during reading. In departmentalized grades, the teacher can only take 2 points per class period. Students can earn 1 point back a day for showing virtuous behavior. NO BONUS POINTS CAN BE EARNED. This will be documented on the PBIS chart as a +1. The student s virtue score will be written in the planner for grades 2-6 and on a daily calendar Pre-K thru 1 st grade. Teachers are required to keep all virtue charts in their PBIS binder. PBIS charts will be monitored and used for further disciplinary action if needed. KIR (Recess) All grade levels will be required to have a KIR room at their assigned recess time. Each KIR room must have a duty teacher to supervise students. Students who have a 7 or lower virtue point in one day, will be sent to KIR the following day. During KIR time, students will be required to complete a behavior reflection page. On the back they are to write sentences using the virtue words. Lower elementary students can draw a picture of someone being virtuous. Parental contact is required when a student is sent to KIR. This can be a note in the planner, an or a phone call. Students who attend KIR 3 days a week should receive a discipline referral to the office. 2

3 Students who refuse to cooperate in KIR will receive a discipline referral. KIR can be used for students who have incomplete homework or tests. T KIR students are not allowed to leave the KIR room once they leave. PBIS Binder All teachers are to use the supplied PBIS binder to store all PBIS materials. A J. I. Barron enrollment sheet must be kept on each student. A communication log is to be kept on each student. All virtue charts are to be kept in the binder. When a student is referred to the office, the binder needs to accompany them to the office. BEAR BUCKS Reward System Team: Moreau, Beach, Buell, Maxey, Bruce) Let s build good character by building better students at JI Barron! Implementing Bear Bucks Reward System: This reward system is designed to increase students virtuous behavior and utilize positive reinforcement. Our team will model how to teach a character building lesson to our faculty. Teachers will organize what they already do with rewarding students in a positive way! Daily teaching/discussions/reflections with our students will help promote virtuous students. Students need to know what each virtue means and some examples of each virtue. During this daily teaching/discussions/reflections, teachers can create anchor charts with students to help students understand good character. Teachers use vocabulary during these reflections and tell students what we expect at JI Barron. As students are being taught how to be virtuous, they will be rewarded by showing virtuous behavior using Bear Bucks! These bucks will be given out to teachers as needed. Students will write his/her name on it and have his/her teacher initial it. Bear Bucks will be used to spend on some type of reward throughout the school year. Earn your bucks! It Students Earn Bear Bucks By: pays to be virtuous! Keeping a DAILY virtue score of 10 (1 Bear Buck each day) Keeping a WEEKLY virtue score of (1 Bear Buck on Friday) Planner signed 4 days (all week) (1 Bear Buck on Friday) Exhibiting any virtuous behavior at any time during the day, by any staff/faculty member at Barron-for example, showing compassion, being kind, persevering (1 Bear Buck) 3

4 Organizing Bear Bucks: Students can simply keep their bucks in a Ziploc bag, labeled with his/her name, and keep in his/her desk or stapled in a binder or notebook. Each teacher may find his/her own way to organize them. However, every student is held responsible for keeping up with his/her own Bear Bucks. Teachers need to document every day s virtue score on chart provided. You will receive a clipboard also. This documentation needs to be kept for our records and teachers will be required to keep weekly charts in PBIS binder. Charts will be monitored. Spending Bear Bucks: We have determined weekly, monthly, semester prizes for our reward system. Students will have the opportunity to spend Bear Bucks as they are earned: Visit to BSU (Barron Student Union)-WEEKLY (Free play time, scheduled) Cash Out Days -approximately EVERY 3 WEEKS (Such as dress days, free privileges) ***These cash out days will be announced! Barron Store-EVERY 9 WEEKS (Students can purchase items with Bear Bucks) Teacher Choice Awards-At teacher discretion, teacher can make up own rewards for cashing in in the classroom. (examples-stinky Feet, treat, special seat, line leader, etc) Upper Team Leader-Bonnette Members-Pooser, Goss, Craig, Beaubouef BARRON STUDENT UNION Implementation of Barron Student Union: The BSU is designed to reinforce positive behavior and build character at J. I. Barron. Students in grades 3-6 will use the upper BSU. As the Barron teachers incorporate virtues into their daily curriculum, students who exemplify exceptional virtue scores throughout the week will be rewarded with a weekly opportunity to use the BSU. We know everyone makes mistakes; therefore, students may earn their way to the BSU using Bear Bucks. How can a student get to use the student union? Students can earn the opportunity to visit the student union in two ways: Keeping a weekly virtue score of 10s (10 every day of the week) Cashing in 20 Bear Bucks (every 3 weeks) Documentation: 4

5 Teachers need to document daily the virtue score on the virtue chart. This chart will be kept for our records, and teachers may be asked to turn it in to the office. Teachers will compile a weekly list of students in their homeroom who are eligible to use the student union for the week. This list will be given to the BSU duty teacher to make sure only those eligible enter on the days allowed. Teachers will add to the list the names of the students who cash in Bear Bucks to use the BSU. Other uses of the BSU: The BSU may also be used by individual teachers or groups to reinforce positive and virtuous behaviors (to be determined for use at a later time). 5

7 PLAYGROUND EXPECTATIONS: BARRON EXPECTATIONS 1. No horse playing, wrestling, etc. Hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 2. Stay in the assigned area. 3. Line up by class on first whistle. 4. Enter building as a class. 5. Enter building quietly. 6. Please don t play with PE equipment. RESTROOM EXPECTATIONS: 1. Wash hands 2. Respect Property 3. Flush and clean up after yourself. 4. Hands to yourself. CAFETERIA EXPECTATIONS 1. Eat only your lunch 2. Remain seated in your designated area until dismissed. 3. Stay in your space. Hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 4. Make sure the area around you is clean. BUS RULES: 1. Students are either a designated bus rider, car rider, or walker. Once this distinction is made, only written permission from a parent/guardian can change the designation. 2. Students must be on time at the designated stop. The bus will not wait. 3. Students must help keep the bus clean. Damages will result in payment. 4. Arms and legs shall be kept inside the bus at all times. 5. Nothing is to be thrown out bus windows. 6. Foul language or gestures will not be tolerated on the bus or toward other drivers. 7. Remain seated until dismissed by bus driver or duty person. 8. No student will be allowed to ride another bus or be discharged at another stop unless he/she has written permission from parent/guardian and approval of principal. 9. Bus drivers are permitted to make reasonable rules for the safety of the children. 10. Any violation of rules shall result in disciplinary action. 7

8 PBIS Reward System Barron Bucks - Most of the PBIS rewards will revolve around the Barron Buck System. - See Above. Barron Student Union - See Student Union instructions PBIS Semester Parties Parties are for students that have maintained a Virtue score of 9 or 10 in behavior for 2 nine weeks or one semester. Party planning and implementation are up to the PBIS committee and are held at the conclusions of the first and second semesters (January and May). Name of participants will be submitted by classroom teachers by two weeks prior to the party. Names can be removed prior to the party if students do not maintain a 9 or 10 virtue score in behavior. *Any student with a Discipline Referral Form within date range will be excluded from the Semester Rewards. No exceptions! Teacher s Choice Rewards Teachers can give Teacher Rewards throughout the day, whenever a reward is due. There is no limit to the number or types of rewards allowed to be given. Some classes utilize marble jars, racetracks, clothespins, candy jars, treasure chests, etc for their reward programs. Continue with your current system to reach established goals. Don t forget to let them know what they are working for! Allow for student choice. Teachers may decide when to issue which type of reward but should still allow students to choose between at least two things. Student of the Week Each week the teacher will nominate one student as their class student of the week. A poster will be given to every student at the beginning of the year. 8

9 Each class is required to have a student of the week poster posted outside their door. Requirements for classrooms student of the week are: Positive Attitude Displays of good virtues of character All nomination forms (see PBIS forms) are to be ed or sent to the office by Friday at 1:00 p.m. Entries will be drawn from to select JI Barron s student of the week. The winner will be announced Monday morning during announcements. The JI Barron student of the week will be featured on the student of the week board and will receive a variety of rewards. Character Education Barron teachers, you are the best at meeting the academic and behavioral needs of all of our students. You are constantly striving to make your students great citizens. With your help, Barron s PBIS program will continue to nurture outstanding character in each student. During the year we are asking a different grade level to help teach and reinforce virtuous behavior. Below you will find your grade level followed by a date and a list of virtue words. We are asking teachers and their students to prepare a week s worth of daily good character announcements. Please use one or more of the virtue words you have been given to prepare a one to two minute story, lesson, skit, etc. that can be shared with the school. Your students may present them during morning announcements or you may send them to the office to be read by administration. See the attached calendar 9

Administration determines student consequence (warning, ISS, suspension, etc.) and notifies parents of disciplinary action.
