2 welcome to Arts NC State All NC State students regardless of college or major are welcome to participate in Arts NC State programs and productions, and to take arts courses for credit/non-credit. What is Arts NC State? Arts NC State is the collective voice of the six visual and performing arts programs at North Carolina State University: Crafts Center, Dance Program, Gregg Museum of Art & Design, Music Department, NC State LIVE and University Theatre. Each year, Arts NC State provides hundreds of outstanding arts opportunities for both the campus and the greater community. Arts NC State is a part of the Division of Academic & Student Affairs (DASA). How do I find out about all of the arts opportunities available on campus? The Arts NC State website () is updated yearround with news and events. On the website, you can sign-up to receive reminders about events. Connect with all of the arts programs on social media! See the individual program listings on the inside of this brochure for more info. Does NC State offer arts majors? Currently, majors are not offered in music, theatre or dance; however, students can obtain a minor in all three areas. A music minor is offered with emphases in Performance, History, Composition or Liberal Arts. The Music Department is also home to the Arts Entrepreneurship Minor. The theatre minor includes a combination of courses that address theatre in historical, theoretical and practical contexts, while preserving an emphasis on application. A dance minor is offered through the Department of Health & Exercise Studies (learn more at go.ncsu.edu/danceminor). Arts-related majors are offered through these colleges: Arts Studies: College of Humanities & Social Sciences (ids.chass.ncsu.edu) Art + Design: College of Design (design.ncsu.edu) Film Studies: College of Humanities & Social Sciences (english.chass.ncsu.edu/film) auditions Arts NC State auditions are open to all students, regardless of academic major or prior experience. Music Auditions Marching Band auditions Marching Band auditions are held on day one of summer Orientation from 4:30-6pm. Go to the second floor of Price Music Center, next door to Talley Student Union. Marching Band auditions involve all major and minor scales as well as light sight-reading. Instruments will be provided during Orientation if you do not have your own. Ensemble auditions Auditions for all other ensembles (A Cappella, Choral, Jazz, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble) take place during the first few days of fall semester. NC State LIVE brings the highest-caliber professional dance, theatre, music and multidisciplinary artists and companies from around the world to our campus. NCStateLIVE Beyond performances, how can I interact with professional artists on campus? In addition to shows (held mainly in Stewart Theatre), NC State LIVE works with campus and community partners to offer free artist talks, workshops, lunchtime conversations, TwitterChats, panels and more. to stay updated. Are there discounts for students? Of course! NC State students may purchase a ticket to an NC State LIVE show for 75% off the public price. All additional programming is free. Can I work or volunteer for NC State LIVE? Yes! NC State LIVE hires student employees to help with marketing, artist services and more. You can also become a volunteer usher to see shows for free. Dance Program 3140 Talley Student Union dance danceprogram@ncsu.edu How do I become a member of the Dance Program s student dance companies? Auditions for the Panoramic Dance Project are Tuesday, August 22, and auditions for the NCSU Dance Company are Wednesday, August 23, both at 6pm in the Carmichael Dance Studio At the audition you will be taught a phrase from our repertory and will be given a short improvisation/composition problem. You do not need to prepare anything in advance. It is not necessary to register to audition, but we would love to know if you are interested ahead of time. NCSUDance Where can I see dance performances on campus? The NC State Dance Program invites you to attend three annual formal concerts in Stewart Theatre inside Talley Student Union and experience beautiful, meaningful art: Dance Program Fall Concert: Thur-Fri, November at 8pm Panoramic Dance Project Concert: Thur-Fri, March at 8pm NCSU Dance Company Concert: Thur-Fri, April at 8pm Stay informed about the Dance Program classes, concerts and special events and sign up for the dance newsletter at go.ncsu.edu/dance-news What is the NCSU Dance Company and the Panoramic Dance Project? The NCSU Dance Company and the Panoramic Dance Project are the academic dance companies of NC State, performing content-driven and research-based dance works choreographed by NC State Dance Program faculty and renowned national and local guest artists. The NCSU Dance Company is the award-winning student company performing a distinguished collection of modern dance. The Panoramic Dance Project is an academic dance company presenting a variety of dance styles in a world context, including African, Latin, hip-hop, jazz, tap and modern. Each company performs annually in the Dance Program Fall Concert, presents a formal spring concert on campus and performs in other on and off-campus venues, including an American College Dance Association conference. Company members receive academic credit for participation. Does the Dance Program offer academic classes for credit? The Dance Program offers academic courses, including Dance Composition and Independent Study in Dance. The Department of Health and Exercise Studies also offers dance courses, most requiring no previous dance experience. Visit dance. for a full list of dance classes. What kind of dance master classes can I take on campus for free? The Dance Program offers its Master Class Series in Carmichael Gym, a unique selection of dance classes taught by local, national and international artists. Master classes scheduled for the fall semester include hip-hop and modern trial classes, Russian and Bollywood Fusion classes for beginners, and advanced ballet and modern. Space is limited and registration required. For schedule and registration, see dance.. Can I get a degree in dance? A dance minor is offered through the Department of Health and Exercise Studies that intersects with the Dance Program. Learn more at go.ncsu.edu/danceminor.
4 Crafts Center Thompson Hall (lower level) crafts What can I do at the Crafts Center? Want a place to be creative and make cool things? Need a place to work on that E101 design project or other academic class project? Students can take non-credit courses and workshops in pottery, woodworking, jewelry, metals, photography, fiber arts, glass, lettering and calligraphy, lapidary, art on paper and more all in a friendly and informal learning environment. Studio passes are available for those with prior experience. NCStateCrafts TheCraftsCenter NCStateCraftsCenter OPEN HOUSE Tuesday, August 15 from 4-6pm, Crafts Center When do I sign up for classes? Priority registration for NC State students for Fall 2017 crafts classes begins Monday, July 17. Priority registration for NC State students for Spring 2018 crafts classes begins Monday, November 13. Are there activities just for NC State students? Yes! The Crafts Center offers a variety of special classes and activities just for NC State students special $7 CRAFTERnoon sessions; activity sessions for residence hall groups and other campus organizations and clubs; and special NC State students only classes like building skateboards, bike repair and maintenance, guitar lessons, and the annual Pinhole Camera Challenge. The Center also hosts speakers and artists who provide specialty workshops and events. Can I work for the Crafts Center? Students interested in part-time work at the Crafts Center should contact Jo Ellen Westmoreland or Carol Fountain Nix. The Crafts Center hires students to work as front desk attendants, woodshop attendants, and pottery studio attendants. Student attendants get a free pass to the studio of their choice, which allows them to explore their own work and creativity. Gregg Museum of Art & Design 1903 Hillsborough Street (as of August 26, 2017) gregg@ncsu.edu gregg. When is the Grand Opening Celebration? Make plans to attend the Gregg Museum Grand Opening on Saturday, August 26 from 10am to 3pm. Inaugural exhibitions will highlight the Gregg s permanent collections everything from a heavy metal quilt to a Chinese dragon robe. Explore our Native American collection and a gallery of large-scale abstract paintings by North Carolina artist Herb Jackson. greggmuseum ncstategreggmuseum GRAND OPENING Saturday, August 26 What else can students look forward to at the new Gregg Museum site? All are welcome with free admission, and students are encouraged to visit the new Gregg often. Visitors will be able to enjoy the beautiful outdoor spaces, which include a pollinator garden and a front lawn for hosting concerts or playing frisbee. The grounds will also be used for educational and public programs such as film screenings, festivals and outdoor performances. In the coming months and years, visitors can expect to see sculpture from the Gregg s permanent collection incorporated into the landscape. Imagine standing in front of a larger than life whirligig! What does the Gregg Museum collect and exhibit? The Gregg Museum has well over 35,000 objects in its collection, including textiles, ceramics, furniture, industrial design, jewelry, sculpture, outsider/visionary art, folk art, photography, works on paper, ethnographic materials, Native American art, and fine craft objects. The Gregg organizes 6-8 exhibitions a year, some featuring the diverse permanent collection, others on a particular artist or thematic concept. at Arts NC State All NC State students regardless of college or major are welcome to participate in Arts NC State programs and productions, and to take arts courses for credit/non-credit.
5 Music Department 203 Price Music Center music How do I enroll for ensembles? Instructors will enroll you after auditions, but be sure to keep the class time open in your schedule when registering for classes. Speak with your academic advisor if you have questions. All ensembles are one-credit academic courses. MusicNCState Who can take a music class? Most music classes are open to all students; you do not have to be working toward a music degree to take music courses. The department offers a variety of courses for all levels and types of music interests including theory, composition, history, popular music, music technology, and music industry. Can I take private lessons? The Music Department offers the opportunity to enroll in private lessons for credit in piano, guitar, voice and all orchestral instruments. Class study in piano and voice is also available. Can I get a degree in music? A minor is available in music with emphases offered in Performance, Composition, History and Liberal Arts. The Music Department also offers a minor in Arts Entrepreneurship. Are there any scholarships available? A variety of scholarships are available to students in ensembles. University Theatre Thompson Hall (upper level) theatre universitytheatre@ncsu.edu Do I have to take a theatre class to be in a University Theatre production? No. University Theatre is NC State s student, volunteer theatre. All students are welcome to audition for an acting role, work behind the scenes in costuming, set design and construction, lighting, sound, technical operations, or on house crew. NCStateUniversityTheatre NCSUTheatre OPEN HOUSE & SEASON INFORMATION MEETING Tuesday, August 15 from 4-6:30pm, Thompson Hall Where is University Theatre? University Theatre s main production and performance spaces are in Thompson Hall, located on the corner of Dunn Avenue and Jensen Drive, next to the Coliseum Parking Deck. This facility is home to two theatres, Titmus Theatre and Kennedy- McIlwee Studio Theatre, plus costume and scenic shops, offices, classroom spaces and Ticket Central. Where do I find theatre classes on Pack Tracks? Is there a theatre major or minor? Theatre classes are listed under THEATRE (THE). NC State does not offer a theatre major; classes are open to anyone who wants to learn about and participate in theatre. Information on the THEATRE minor program can be found at our website theatre.. Are there any opportunities to work for University Theatre? University Theatre offers employment and volunteer opportunities for its facility and production activities. 6 special arts opportunities for NC State students Student Art Sale & Visual Artist Award Since 2001, Arts NC State has purchased original artwork from NC State students and since 2014, the sale has been opened to the public each April. One student's outstanding artwork will be selected for the Visual Artist Award, a new opportunity that awards a student $500, and their work featured prominently in Talley for the following academic year. Visit go.ncsu.edu/studentart for details. Working Man (2006), acrylic on canvas, by Kelsey Crago, architecture Creative Artist Award Win $500 and a chance to have your work produced by Arts NC State. A committee of music, dance and theatre faculty annually reviews submissions of original student work in the fields of music, dance and theatre. Each winning creative artist(s) receives a cash award, and the selected work(s) will be performed the following academic year by the appropriate Arts NC State performing arts program. Live in the Arts Village Find your creative community! The Arts Village Living-Learning Village unites students who have an interest in the arts and exposes them to theatre, visual arts and crafts, music and dance. Participants are assigned housing in Turlington Hall and get FREE tickets to Arts NC State and Triangle arts performances, insightful interaction with guest artists through pre/post-performance activities, priority seating in some arts related academic classes, and priority use of the Masini Practice Room in Price Music Center. Apply when you apply for campus housing through MyPack Portal.
