As part of the AL$ steering committee for Cal Poly Pomona, Bronco Bookstore and the University Library are working together to apply for a grant potentially worth up to $10,000 to encourage faculty to adopt, use, and share their experiences with open textbooks. This grant opportunity is the result of legislation passed in 2012 (SB 1052 and SB 1053) which directed the three public higher education systems to try to reduce course materials costs for students by identifying common courses across the systems which could most benefit from using Open Educational Resources (OERs) instead of traditional commercial textbooks in those courses. Since then, the California Open Educational Resource Council which includes Cal Poly Pomona s own Dr. Ruth Guthrie from CIS has worked to select those common courses and find appropriate open-access digital textbooks for those courses. This has produced the California Open Online Library 4 Education (COOL4ED), a website and database of open-access digital textbooks and learning resources that includes peer reviews of many of the featured works, and case studies from faculty. Cool4Ed has reviewed titles include works from OpenStax, Flatworld, Boundless, Saylor, University of Minnesota, WikiBooks, NOBA, and more. Now the CSU s Affordable Learning group wants to persuade more CSU faculty to try using these materials for their courses and give feedback on the impact for students. To do this, they are offering the campus Affordable Learning committees grants of up to $10,000 per campus to award $1,000 stipends for each faculty member (up to 10 per campus) who is willing to adopt an OER textbook as the primary required course material, and then give a report of how the material was used. Based on the list of titles reviewed as of early March 2015, the Affordable Learning committee here has identified several disciplines to focus our recruitment efforts on: Communications, Economics, Statistics, Biology, History, Sociology, and Zoology. 2 2 MERLOT Links Now Available within VERBA COLLECT for Summer/Fall 2015 Course Materials Adoptions When we decided to use the Verba Collect platform to replace TextReq for faculty adoptions, one of main reasons for that decision was Verba s partnership with the CSU s Affordable Learning Solutions on a pilot adoptions program involving nine key schools in the California State System, including this campus. The goals of this pilot program are threefold: 1. To create a common repository for adoption data across the Cal State System whether the institution has a leased store or independent bookstore 2. To better help the institution conform to HEOA standards 3. To provide faculty with more choices when making adoption decisions. Providing faculty with more choice is a key aim of this pilot program. ALS and the Cal State System have a goal to give faculty access to as many resources as possible so that they can make well-informed, affordable adoption decisions. We re happy to announce that there is now a link from within Verba Collect to the CSU s MERLOT repository of digital and open access learning objects. Now when faculty use Collect to submit requisitions, they will see a MERLOT link under each listing when they search for a new book. This link takes the faculty member to the OER page inside MERLOT and suggests free/open access resources associated with the ISBN they select. Here are instructors for using these new features are now available to Cal Poly Pomona faculty within Verba Collect: When you receive an from Bronco Bookstore asking you to submit adoptions simply click on that link and you will be taken directly to a page that features the courses and sections to which you have been assigned. Click select all or choose the unique section you are adopting for and click the green button entitled Go to next step You are now on the Past Books section where you can re-adopt what you have used in the past or click the button Go to next step Clicking Go to next step takes you to the New Books section where you can enter the ISBN of your new book adoption or you can click on the SEARCH BOOKS tab. Clicking on the Search Books tabs takes you to a page where you can enter the name of an author, title or subject and you will see every book containing your search word.

3 3 Here you will see the list price of each book you may be considering to adopt. You will also see a link entitled MERLOT underneath each title that meets your search criterion. Clicking on this link will take you into the MERLOT database. This is a database of Open Educational Resources and other free texts for your review. ALS has created this database to expose faculty to as many choices in order to affect affordability. Here is what the MERLOT link looks like inside the Search Books screen: Soon, there will also be a button to adopt materials found within MERLOT and that information will be included in the requisition Verba Collect sends to our store so we can post that information for students and for the DRC. We are hoping that this link will encourage faculty to consider using affordable open access resources when they find materials that are a good fit for their classes. The bookstore can support those adoptions by posting information and links on our bookstore website for those classes, and stocking low-cost print versions or upgrades (when those options are available).

Verba Collect Reminders: To use Verba Collect, instructors don t need to remember a user ID and password, or navigate through multiple menus to get to the courses they are teaching. Instead, Verba Collect sends s to each faculty member with assigned courses for the upcoming quarter in our system. These messages include a customized link to the page where faculty can submit their books for their specific sections. The s will come from the address Csupomona@verbasoftware.com so be sure to add that address to your contacts or safe senders list so our messages don t go to your spam folder. New faculty members can add themselves to the site and create a log in if they haven t received a message with the link yet: 1. Go to 2. Click on the Help I m lost or I don t have a password 3. You will be prompted for your address- it must be an address with domains 4. Verba Collect will generate an with instructions for you to complete your login setup. To get started a user just has to click the select and submit course materials button next to the course s/he is ready to submit or edit and follow the prompts to readopt books used in the past or adopt new books from the database. 5 5 New Textbook Customer Service Assistant We are happy to welcome Stephanie McRae as our new customer service lead for the course materials department. She joins us after working at the bookstore for Golden West Community College for several years. Stephanie is in charge of making sure the textbook floor is arranged and tagged correctly and that students can find what they need easily, and that our student employees working the textbook floor are providing accurate and helpful service. She works with our Book Operations manager for logistics, Mike Jackson, to keep an eye on incoming shipments and potential problems. Her desk is right out at the Book Information counter on the sales floor, so she s the best person to call to check to see if a book is on the shelf or a shipment has come in yet. 6 6 Textbooks Refunds Summer 2015 SESSION A: 10-WEEK SESSION, 6/22 9/3/15 Last day to return is June 25. Register Receipt dated between 5/18 and 6/25 required. SESSION B: 1st 5-WEEK SESSION, 6/22 7/28/15 Last day to return is June 25. Register Receipt dated between 5/18 and 6/25 required. * SESSION C: 2nd 5-WEEK SESSION, 7/29 9/3/15 Last day to return is 8/4. Register Receipt dated between 5/18 and 8/14 AND copy of student s class schedule reflecting enrollment in Session C required. RENTAL REFUNDS: 6/25 is the last day to return a rented textbook for a refund or convert the rental to a sale for the difference between the purchase and rental price. After 6/25/15 all rentals are final and returned books will not be due a refund. Students who decide they want to keep a rented book after that date must pay the full used retail price. RENTAL DUE DATES: Session A & C: 9/3/15 Session B: 7/28/15 Students are responsible for rental non-return charges after those dates

7 7 Textbooks Refunds Fall 2015 REGULAR REFUNDS Last day to return Fall course material is 9/30/15. Register receipt dated 8/17-9/30/15 and photo I.D. required for refunds on textbook purchases or rentals. DROPPED CLASS REFUND PERIOD Last day to return Fall course materials from dropped classes is 10/7/15. Register receipt dated 8/17-10/7/15, proof of dropped class and photo I.D. required for refunds of textbook purchases or rentals. RENTAL REFUNDS: 10/7/15 is the last day to convert a textbook rental to a sale for the difference between the rental and the purchase price. After 10/7 all rentals are final and returned books will not be due a refund. Students who decide they want to keep a rented book after that date must return the rental and then re-purchase at the full used retail price. RENTAL DUE DATES: Fall rentals due back to store by the close of business 12/11/15. Students are responsible for non-return charges after that date.
