How about this crazy weather? I hope that the snow melts soon. It s hard to believe that we are over halfway through the school year. Our students are off to a solid second half and we are excited to see the great things they will continue to accomplish both in (and outside) of the classroom the rest of the school year. Testing: As the weather hopefully warms up heading into spring, so does the season of testing. Over the next few months, our students will participate in a wide variety of standardized state and local assessments. These assessments are designed to gauge a student s academic performance level in different core content areas. One of the tests we administer is the NeSA (Nebraska State Accountability) test in the areas of math, reading, writing, and science (science and writing are for 8th Graders only). We have already assessed our 8th Grade students in writing in January and they worked very hard on giving their best effort. The NeSA tests are mastery level tests (which means we are looking for students to meet basic grade levels of academic performance). The levels are set state wide and if a student passes the cut score for that assessment, they have passed that test. If students don t meet the minimum requirements, they fail the test and we continue to build additional skills for them as needed to increase their performance in the future. Another standardized test we administer is the MAPs test. MAP s stands for Measuring Academic Progress and this test measures each student s instructional level. For this assessment, we test students in the areas of reading, math, and language. Different from a mastery level test, these tests measure where students are in terms of instructional levels. For these tests, students could be a 7th Grader, yet show that they could cognitively handle instructional levels of material at a higher level (say 9th or 10th grade). All of these assessments assist our teachers with designing effective classroom lessons that meet the individual academic needs of all their students. Additionally, these tests provide data to parents and our community about our school s strengths and areas we are working to improve. Thank you in advance for encouraging your child to give their very best on each assessment. Registration: Another important item coming up this spring is student registration for different grade levels. We will be registering 8th Graders for High School the week of March This will be done on line here at school. We will be registering our 7th Graders for 8th Grade classes on Monday, April 11, and Tuesday, April 12, during their PRIDE classes. Registration for incoming 7th Graders will be Thursday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m., in the Junior High auditorium. Parent-Teacher Conferences: Just a reminder that Parent/Teacher conferences are the week of February The Junior High has conferences on Monday, February 8, and Wednesday, February 10, from 4-7 p.m. We also have conferences on Thursday, February 11, from 1-4 p.m. There is no school on Friday, February 12. Hope to see you at conferences!!! Thanks again for your educational commitment to your child and our school! Mr. Hart

7 To help keep your family healthy, here are some guidelines. Preventative actions include; staying away from ill people, avoiding close contact with others, and washing your hands often. Hand washing is the most effective preventative action against the spread of germs. Other preventative measures include avoiding touching areas of your eyes, nose, mouth, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces that may be contaminated. Influenza generally comes on rapidly and may include some or all of the following symptoms: fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, fatigue, vomiting, or diarrhea.
