McPherson High School is entering the seventh year of the district s Citizenship, College, and Career (C3) Readiness initiative. The district will continue to look at a number of different measurements to help students determine their path after graduation. All Seniors will take the ACT assessment during the Fall semester, paid for by the school district. The Pre ACT assessment will be the 9th and 10th Grade college readiness assessment and 11th Grade students will complete an ACT examination in the Spring, paid for by the school district. Students will continue to work in the Naviance program during Advisory to explore post-high school options while developing and revising individual plans of study. McPherson High School students will see a change in the start and ending time for the school year. Classes will begin at 7:50 AM daily, with dismissal occurring at 2:51 PM (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) and 2:23 PM on Tuesdays. All students will continue to have a Chromebook issued to them for use throughout the school year. Meal Tickets ($1.80-breakfast/$2.85-lunch) may be purchased and added to at the Kitchen (Room 92) BEFORE school each day. NO MEAL CHARGING ALLOWED. Checks should be made payable to USD 418. Help Keep Our Kids Safe! Any student enrolled and wants to participate in SPS class must have a current physical (dated after May 1, 2016) on file in the activities office. During the school year, parents are to pick up students in the southeast parking lot, off of First Street. Buses will be picking up/dropping off students in the northwest parking lot, off of North High Drive. We hope this will reduce some of the confusion and be safer around the exits. Students are not to be picked up after school in the northwest parking lot. Student Parking is available in both parking lots. Students are NOT to park in the Reserved or Visitor parking stalls, or in the bus loading zones.

The type of dress, apparel, activities, acts, behavior or manner of grooming displayed, reflected, or participated in by any student will not: a) lead school officials to reasonably believe that the behavior, apparel, activities, acts, or other attributes would disrupt or interfere with the school environment or activity and/or educational objectives; b) present a physical safety hazard to self, students, staff, and other employees; c) create an atmosphere in which a student, staff, or other person s well-being is hindered by undue pressure, behavior, intimidation, overt gesture, or threat of violence; d) or imply gang membership or affiliation by written communication, marks, drawing, painting, design or emblem upon any school building, any personal property, or on one s person. The principal, or his designee, shall take appropriate corrective and disciplinary action as necessary. 2. Clothing and apparel that bears offensive designs or language, advertisement of alcoholic beverages, drugs and/or tobacco products are prohibited at school and school activities. 3. Halter tops and spaghetti straps may not be worn unless they are worn over or under another shirt (not another tank top) and may not expose underclothing. 4. No shirt or blouse may be worn which allow exposed underclothing, midriffs, torso, breasts or cleavage. 5. No off the shoulder shirts or blouses. 6. Shorts, skirts, and dresses should adequately cover the buttocks and upper thighs. 7. Students are required to wear footwear for health reasons. 8. Pants and shorts must be worn fastened at the natural waistline, not exposing underclothing. 9. Clothing and apparel that is of such cut or design as to be considered immodest, shall be deemed inappropriate for wear at school and school activities. Given that styles change over time, the intent of these guidelines are to promote the purpose of the school and reduce potential distractions to the teaching and learning environment. The administration reserves the right to add more guidelines, if deemed necessary.

PowerSchool Info Many of you are familiar with PowerSchool and know how to use it. However, for those of you who don t use it, this is a tool that you won t know how you ever lived without. By using PowerSchool, you have access to: your student s grades your student s attendance/tardies info can contact the teachers by can see if work has been turned in/graded can get homework assignments can view the Daily Bulletin (announcements) lunch menu etc... To access PowerSchool, you will need your Username and Password, which was handed out to your student.

5 The New Guidance Office The Guidance office has been restructured to better meet our students needs. Students are assigned to a single guidance office staff member who will be the point of contact for all needs. If you need help with anything, just ask, and your GO staffer will ensure that your needs are met. The assignments are as follows: All new students get to visit with Sylvia Ehrlich. A - G, 9th - 12th, will be edified by Stephanie Hamilton. H - O, 9th - 12th, have the pleasure of Jeanne Zeitlow. P - Z, 9th - 12th, will be blessed by Anna Berg. Any student in need of social or emotional support will visit with Sylvia Ehrlich or Kim Krase. Tuesday, September 27th All School Test Date More info later!! Most courses that are designated as Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) or Advanced Placement (AP) will receive an additional grade point. The grade stands as dictated by the percentage earned in the course, only the grade point is adjusted. Grading Scale/Grade Point Average The grading scale for all courses is listed below. Grade point average (GPA) will be calculated utilizing a system whereby a grade of A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0. A A A B B B C C C D D D F 59 and below Test Preparation The 2016 PSAT/NMSQT test dates are Wednesday, October 19. You must sign up for the PSAT/NMSQT at your high school in your community. This test is administered by high schools, not through test centers. If you would like to take the PSAT/NMSQT, contact your high school counselor or principal to find out about registering for the test. Also, contact your guidance office for a copy of the Official Student Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT to help you prepare before test day.

6 McPherson High School KAY students will be hosting a membership drive August 25-September 1 during first and second lunches. The Kansas Association for Youth (KAY) is a character-building, leadership-training, service program directed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. This nationally acclaimed organization provides students an opportunity to learn to assume their citizenship responsibilities and to enrich their personalities through well-organized programs, projects and parties. Programs educate, inspire and direct members into carefully planned service projects. These projects emphasize four areas of service - school, community, nation and world. Membership dues are $5. Paint Your Space: Our new seniors recently personalized the parking spaces they paid to reserve for the year as part of a class fundraiser. Underclassmen who park in a reserved senior space will lose the privilege of having their own space when they are a senior. Parents and visitors, please refrain from parking in these spaces when you come to the high school during normal school hours as some seniors may temporarily be away from the building attending internships or college classes.
