1 May 13,2016 Hopkins Public Schools Hopkins Middle School Newsletter 215 Clark Street Hopkins, MI Ph: Fax: Committed to Quality Education for our Children s Future Hopkins Public Schools Cereal Drive During the summer months, most children in rural Allegan County do not have access to the free breakfast programs that are offered for low income students during the school year. Because hunger doesn t take a summer vacation, the Allegan County Food Pantry Collaborative is holding a cereal drive. The goal is 40,000 boxes of kid-friendly cereal during the month of May Reaching our goal will mean that every child whose family receives services from a member pantry will receive a box of cereal each week of the summer vacation months. Each student and staff member of Hopkins Middle School is encouraged to bring in at least one box of cereal during May. An added challenge could be one box per week or one box per grocery visit! Middle School Gym The 7th annual Hopkins Middle School 5K will be held Friday, May 20. We are in need of some volunteers to assist in the "running" of this awesome experience. Volunteers are needed from 7:30 to 12:00. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mr. Hazen at ext 3593 or send a note with your student. As part of this event we are taking donations to help the Annetta Jansen Food Pantry in Dorr. Every cent raised goes to this charity, which serves over 600 families monthly. Please support your student and a local charity by sponsoring a middle schooler. Thank you. 2 The final field trip for the 7th grade students will take place on June 9th at the Grandville Bowling Alley. Information will be sent home soon. This trip is based on good behavior for the third trimester and is the final reward trip of the year. We are looking forward to a fun morning of bowling with your children and thanks for sharing your young adults with us for the school year. 6 th Grade Whitecaps Reading Trip Wednesday, May 18, 2016 ***Tickets for guests meeting us at the ball park will go home with students on Tuesday, May 17. Everyone else will receive their tickets at the ball park when they exit the bus. ***For those students and guests who are bringing a lunch or have bought school sack lunches, they must be eaten prior to entering the ball park. NO FOOD OR DRINK CAN BE BROUGHT INTO THE BALL PARK. ***For guests who are riding the bus to the game, please be in the lobby of Hopkins Middle School by 9:15. ***Game time is 11:00. For guests who are meeting us at the ball park, make plans to meet your student at Gate C. We have lawn seats this year, so plan accordingly. Studets may go home with their guests from the ball park, however they need to be signed out with their advisory teacher. ***NEW FOR ALL BAGS WILL BE CHECKED BEFORE ENTERING THE BALL PARK. THIS IN- CLUDES, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO: PURSES, BACK- PACKS, AND TOTE BAGS. 5 The Hopkins Athletic Department is pleased to present the summer camp schedule for All of our sports programs who offer summer camps have worked together to provide Hopkins families with a clear and consolidated schedule of all summer camp activities. While preregistration of your camper is highly recommended it is not required but your athlete will not be guaranteed a camp T- shirt if they do not register by the June 25 th deadline. Girls basketball and softball are due June 6 th. (Registration forms received after June 25 th will not be processed by the Hopkins Athletic Department and will be returned via US Mail). Please fill out the registration form, mail to the designated address and retain the bottom schedule portion for your records. Remember to copy any contact information that you may need for your selected camps. If you have any general questions in regards to summer camp programs please contact Autumn Kraima X1512 or autukrai@hpsvikings.org SOFTBALL (5 th -8 th ) The Hopkins Softball skills camp is for 5 th -8 th graders and will cover the basics of fielding, throwing, pitching, and hitting. Bring cleats, glove, and tennis shoes (weather permitting). Each pre-registered camper will receive a t-shirt. Cost $25. June 13th -15 th, the High School Field. Contact: Coach Casey Schoenborn **Registration Due by June 6** Forms available in the office CHUMPS to CHAMPS WRESTLING CAMP (1 st - 12 th ) Hopkins Wrestling presents a camp for students in grades 1 st through 12 th. Receive wrestling instruction from our current coaching staff and many former wrestlers. Camp will run from July 11 th -July 13 th. 6:30pm-9:00pm in the High School Gym. $25 per wrestler and each preregistered wrestler will receive a T-shirt. VOLLEYBALL (4 th -12 th ) Hopkins Volleyball invites girls in grades 4 through 12 to participate in a summer skills camp July 25-July 28, 4 th -7 th graders 2-4pm in the High School Gym, 8 th -12 th graders 9am-1:30pm. The camp will cover all aspects of volleyball at both levels. An emphasis will be placed on teaching the game for the younger girls and refining the game for the older group. Preregistered campers will receive a camp T-shirt. $35 for 4 th -7 th graders. $50 for 8 th -12 th graders. The 8 th -12 th group will need to pack a lunch for each day of camp. A $5 late fee will be applied for campers registering at the camp and after June 25 th. Camp Contact: Terrie Wisser BOYS BASKETBALL (3 rd - 6 th ) All 3rd-8th Grade Boys are invited to participate in a Hopkins Youth Summer Basketball Camp. The dates of the camp will be August 2 rd 4 th 3 rd /4 th grade camp 5:00pm-6:30pm, 5 th /6 th grade camp 6:30-8:00pm. Both camps will be held in the Hopkins High School Gym. The cost of the camp is $25 and all early registration participants will receive a T-shirt and learn valuable basketball skills. Camp contact: Jeff Weber, CHEERLEADING (1 st -8 th ) Our Hopkins Competitive Cheerleading team is pleased to invite students in grades 1 st -8 th to a Competitive Cheerleading Camp. July 25-July 28, 6:30-8pm at the High School Track. Cost is $20 and each camper will receive a t- shirt. Athletes at all grade levels will learn these skills from our coaching staff using our drills. Each year participating in our camp will allow athletes a better understanding of our system and the ability to grow in our program. Athletes will receive a t-shirt as well as individual attention from our basketball staff. June 13-16, 6:30pm-8:30pm, $40 Hopkins High School Gym Camp contact John Robinson robinsj@wyomingps.org **Registration Due by June 6** YOUTH SOCCER CAMP (PreK-6 th ) This camp will introduce and improve age-appropriate skills and techniques for all players in a fun environment. Each grouping has a unique set of activities tailored to their age group. Players will get a lot of touches on the ball every day to increase ball familiarity and foot-eye coordination. Fun games are used to introduce the kids to game or to improve on their already existing skills. Only campers registered by the due date will receive a t- shirt. Hopkins Soccer Youth Camp for PreK-6th grade students. August 1 st -4 th, PreK-6 th 6pm-7pm. Camp will be held on the High School Soccer Fields. Camp cost is $25 PreK-6 th ($10 late fee). Camp Contact: Wade Schuemann ADVANCED SOCCER CAMP (7 th - 12 th ) A highly technical camp to refine and master individual skills and techniques in a challenging environment. Each camper will get hundreds of touches on the ball every day. Tactical drills and small sided games will be included as well to further each player's understanding of the game. Only campers registered by the due date will receive a t-shirt Hopkins Soccer Skills camp for 7 th -12 th grade students. July 25th-July 28th, 5pm- 7pm. Camp will be held on the High School Soccer Fields. Camp cost is $40 ($10 late fee). YOUTH FOOTBALL (1 st -8 th ) All 1 st -8 th Grade Boys are invited to participate in a Hopkins Youth Summer Football Camp. The dates of the camp will be July 25-July 28 (Rain date July 29). Day 1 of camp will run from 6pm-8pm, all other dates will run from 6:30pm-8pm. Camp will be held on the fields behind the football stadium. The cost of the camp is $20 ($25 for late registrants) and all early registration participants will receive a T- shirt and learn valuable football skills. You may leave a message on our voic system day or night. When reporting illness, please inform Secretary of what type of symptoms your child is experiencing. Fever, sore throat, ect. If your child is absent 2 days or more, you may request homework. If absent only 1 day, homework can be picked up from their Teacher the next day. PHONE CALLS Telephones in the office are to be used for illness and emergencies only. Thank you for your cooperation. IMMUNIZATIONS Please report all immunizations that your child has had so we can keep our school records up to date. All new students and all 6th graders must be completely up to date on all immunizations. Please contact the HMS office if you have any questions. MEDICATION ALL medications dispensed to the students must be supplied from home. The school does not provide any type of medication. All prescription medication must be provided in a pharmacy labeled bottle. Tylenol/Aspirin must be brought to the office in an unopened bottle. All students requiring any type of medication must have a medication form completed by their parents. CHANGES in Phone Numbers, Home Address & Please inform the office any time there are changes in your address or phone numbers. We need to have this information so we can update our records.
