1 May 21, 2014 Volume 2, Issue 3 14 N Leo News Information for all Leos District 14N Leo Clubs -Apollo Ridge Senior -Apollo Ridge Middle -Beaver Area -Beaver Falls Area -Blackhawk Members from at least three of the District 14N Leo Clubs attended the Leo Rally held at Beacon Lodge from April They worked in mixed groups on community service projects. They also enjoyed rock climbing, paddle boats, archery, croquet, zip line and more. The evenings included time for educational talks, social gathering, and just relaxing. 2 SEMINARS, SOCIALIZING, RELAXING Apollo Ridge High School Leo Club April: hoagie fundraiser; we delivered a check to our life skills department for $170 to use for their prom. May: Learning Festival; we offered a game for small children to win a prize earned $53 which will get donated to a charity (not yet defined). The first picture is 4 of my Leo's (Megan Paiano, Erin Rodgers, Kennedy Kehew, Alyssa Seaman) May: Dancing With The Teachers; teachers and students dance on stage, are judged, the audience votes for the winner. We raised approximately $800 (not a confirmed amount) to be donated to Special Olympics of Armstrong and Indiana Counties. Leo Club Advisor Christa Mika mikac@apolloridge.com

3 Apollo Ridge Middle School Leo Club The Apollo-Ridge Middle School LEO Club had a spaghetti dinner that raised $2300 for FOCUS Pittsburgh to go towards their backpack program. Our Annual Lock-In was Friday, February 14,2014. LEO members got new NEON Green LEO t-shirts for this year. Leo Club Advisor Joyce Yovetich yovej@apolloridge.com Beaver Area High School Leo Club During January, the Beaver LEO Club started the process of taking rose orders for Valentine s Day. On 13 February, 12 LEOs came to school early and assembled 70 dozen roses that had been ordered by people around school. The Valentine s Day Rose Sale brought in a profit of just over $ to be contributed to Lion s Club charities. Also during February, paperwork for the LEO Summit in April was discussed with club members and passed out for parent consideration. In March, LEOs were given a display case near the entrance to the school to advertise LEO activities and events. A team of LEOs have been assigned to maintain current information in the display case. Plans have started for a spaghetti dinner and a sock hop to end the school year. In April, LEOs began getting people to sign up for Mother s Day Roses. Our LEO Club President also attended the Spring Rally at Slippery Rock University. During the Rally, Delanie Baker was awarded the LEO of the Year Award for District 14N. 4 Beaver Falls Leo Club Ashley, Erica, Jade, Lauren, Macy worked at World Vision. Not only did we work hard, but we had fun also! The Yellow Ribbon Girls sent their thanks for the donations for our deployed soldiers. We are selling lollipops to defray the cost of our end of the year field trip! March 22 was the monthly Produce to the People at the BF Middle School Café at 9am. Any family that could use some extra groceries, they start passing them out at 10am. Our end of the year trip was on Friday, May 9 th. We went to Station Square, riding the historical incline up to Mt. Washington, then taking a narrated tour on the Gateway Clipper through the three rivers that make up Pittsburgh. Leo Club Advisor Cindy Lokey lokeyc@tigerweb.k12.pa.us Blackhawk Leo Club In February for Valentine s Day we made Valentines for the Franciscan Manor, A Senior Citizen Assisted Living facility located in Patterson Township, Beaver Falls. We also judged "4th Grade Drug Awareness" poster for the Blackhawk Intermediate School. In March, the Chippewa Lions hosted the annual Blind Talent Show for ST Patrick's for the Blind citizens of Beaver County and we assisted with their efforts. The party took place at the Blind Association in Beaver Falls. April was the end of all club activities at Blackhawk High School.

5 Leo Club Advisor Joe Verbosky Ford City Leo Club On 4/19/14 members assisted with the Lions Club annual Community Easter Egg Hunt. 1,500 children took part in this event. We conducted our annual Earth Day Community Clean-up on 4/26/14 from 9-noon. We cleaned the Ford City Park, the 7th Avenue playground, Boulder Park, the Rails-to-Trails to either end of town, the Riverfront Park, the school grounds, the library grounds, and all of the sidewalks in town. We also made a $1250 contribution to Beacon Lodge. Leo Club Advisor Brian Coil BCoil@asd.k12.pa.us Kittanning Junior High Leo Club In February, the Kittanning Junior High Leo Club sent Valentines to two local children suffering from serious illnesses. One was a teenager, and they included an itunes gift card for her. The other was a preschooler, and they also included Valentines for his sister along with a DVD and popcorn so the family could enjoy a movie night. As a community service project, ten Leos visited a local nursing home and spent an hour playing games and just talking with the residents. The Leos got the entire school involved in a Heart Walk in late February. This resulted in $430 for the American Heart Association. A Box Tops for Education contest resulted in $156 for the school to put toward a bowling party for all students as a reward for their efforts on the PSSA tests. The winner of the contest received a pizza party for herself and three guests. We held a Rails to Trails Clean Up in conjunction with the Senior High Leo Club on April 17.

6 We had five Leos attend the Leo Rally along with myself. Leo Club Advisor Lisa Blair Kittanning Senior High Leo Club In February we held a school wide contest collecting for Pennies for Patients, the children division of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We offered a pizza party, an ice cream party, and a donut party to the top three classes and distributed Valentine s candy to all students with notes encouraging them to give. We collected $ On April 15 th we held an Easter egg hunt for the Life Skills students. Twenty students found ten eggs each hidden in the cafeteria. Fruit and juice was served after the hunt. On April 17 th we cleaned up the Rails to Trails along with the Junior High Leo Club. On April 23 rd Leos helped with the Kittanning Public Library book sale by moving books from the library to the church next door. It was hard work but enjoyable. On April 26, our president attended the Leo Rally at Beacon Lodge. On May 6 th we held a pink walk for the James Lindahl Fund, a toddler diagnosed with leukemia. We raised $ On May 23 rd we will run a booth at our Spring Festival, an afternoon of games and entertainment to be held on the football field. 7 On April 6 we cleaned up the Kittanning Community Park and Riverfront Park in honor of Earth Day On April 21 we went to the Mechling-Shakley Veteran s Center to volunteer cleaning up their home and visiting with the residents.
