3 Page 3 Morning Glory PS Annual Turkey Trot At Morning Glory PS we continue to have a Healthy Schools focus. This year, each day for two weeks, classes were invited to run laps around the field during DPA. Students earned ballots for the turkey draw for each lap that they completed. The draw was held the Friday before the Thanksgiving long weekend. A few of the winners are below. Congratulations!! Madison, Ramya, Sam, William, Brooklynn, Audrey, Jayme, Lucas, Autumn and Charlene. Photo Retake Day Please mark November 24th on your calendar for MGPS s picture retake day. Students who were absent for the original photo day, new students to MGPS, or students who had a problem with their original photo may have their photos taken on Photo Retake Day. Photographers will be in the school for the morning only.

4 Page 4 Seasonal Flu Shots All individuals aged 6 months or older and who live, work or attend school in York Region are encouraged to get the flu shot unless you have a contraindication to the vaccine.. (YR Flu Poster) Clinic times, dates and locations will be listed in your local newspaper and the York Region website at School Bus Cancellations A decision to cancel school bus transportation will be region-wide meaning all buses, vans and taxis will not operate. Parents, students and school staff are asked to access local radio and television stations after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus cancellation information. A bus cancellation message will also be available at and or by following the YRDSB on Twitter. Remembrance Day On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Canadians are asked to pause in memory of the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in military service. Why the poppy? In 1915, Canadian Lt.-Col. John McCrae was inspired to write the poem In Flanders Fields on sighting the poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle. The first poppies were distributed in Canada in Today the volunteer donations from the distribution of millions of poppies is an important source of revenue for the Royal Canadian Legion that goes toward helping ex-servicemen and women buy food, and obtain shelter and medical attention. We welcome you to our Assembly on November 11th to honour those who died and those who continue to fight for freedom around the world. Some of our classes have been working very hard on their presentation for this assembly. Please join us at 10:30 in the gym. Please note that school bus charters will not operate when regular home to school service is cancelled. Student Transportation Services thanks you for your efforts to distribute this information as we continually strive to improve service levels to our schools and students.

5 Page 5 Let it Snow As the cold weather season begins The weather is turning windy and cool and we know that our Canadian winters guarantee that it will get colder! Please make sure your child comes to school dressed to go outdoors. Extra sweaters and jackets and mitts may be required. Please make sure all items are labelled clearly with your child s initials. All students are required to go outside for recess in the morning and after lunch and we are unable to accommodate requests for children to remain indoors as appropriate supervision is not available. A reminder from York Region Health Services, that children who are ill should remain at home until they are completely recovered. This will help prevent the spread of any cold or flu bugs and assist in keeping all of us healthy! Students are aware of the following consequences: 1st incident: yard privileges temporarily removed 2nd incident: warning letter or phone call goes home; yard privileges removed 3rd incident: phone call home/meeting with parent(s); yard privileges removed; suspension. (see below). Thank you for your cooperation! We often receive requests from parents asking us to keep their children indoors during recess times because they are not feeling well. Unfortunately, we do not have the staff or facilities to supervise students who are sick or still recovering from an illness. Students with heavy colds, etc., which are serious enough to prevent them from participating in physical education, recesses or other outdoor activities, should remain at home until their condition improves. This will likely benefit the students concerned and prevent the spread of this illness to others. Please make sure that your children are dressed properly for our invigorating winter days. It is advisable for students to bring extra pants and socks. A change is often necessary due to the wet and cold weather of the winter months. To avoid adding to our clothing collection in the Lost and Found, please be sure to label all articles of clothing. Boots, hats, mitts/gloves, scarves, and snow pants for the younger children will help make recess an enjoyable time. Exceptions are made on an individual basis for children who may need to remain indoors for an extended period of time because of a physical condition or recovery from a serious illness or accident. In such cases, a letter from the doctor is required. Students are to come to school ready for winter and prepared to be outdoors up to 40 minutes after lunch. We always monitor the weather and, in extreme conditions e.g. wind chill; we keep the students indoors or shorten the recess breaks.
