1 Edition: June 2017 Weekly Newsletter of St Peter s Girls SP School FROM THE HEADMASTER THE PIED PIPER OF HAMLIN Many, many hours of acting, singing, laughing and crying culminated in the most brilliant Grade 7 play last night. The second performance will be tonight. Our Grade 7 girls certainly did themselves proud! Whether they had a main part, played a musical instrument or were part of a group, each girl was fully engaged and played their respective parts brilliantly! A huge thank you to Mrs Mel Aspeling for producing this play. Also, to Mr Ron Thackwell, who assisted and supported Mel and played the guitar, Mrs Lee Pace and the group of Grade 6 girls who worked with the sound and lighting, Mrs Belinda van der Watt for the incredible set designs, Mrs Ingerid de Bruyn for our amazing costumes and the phenomenal, Mrs Marguerite Schmitt for the music and choreography. Thank you to Mrs Leigh Tennant, Mrs Colleen Ireland and Mrs Lara Rishworth for performing the many administrative duties required for a play of this nature as well as to all the other teachers who took extra classes and supported wherever and whenever possible! 2 Have an wonderful midterm break!! Darrel Webb (Headmaster) ST PETER S DAY Tomorrow, Friday 23 June, our school celebrates St Peter s Day. The girls will attend a celebratory Eucharist at 07:30. The No 1 uniform must be worn for this occasion. On St Peter s Day, we honour our patron, Saint Peter, and celebrate the families and the community, which make up our school. We reflect on how the qualities of Saint Peter, the man, are reflected in this school. A large, gruff man who led a simple life and was prone to human failings, but whose humility, faith and courage grew, as he got older. We see so much of this in our children here - who make mistakes, as they are young, and become increasingly determined, faithful and cognisant of others, as they mature. 2 P a g e

3 It is an appropriate time too, to explain the significance of our badge, which depicts two crossed keys below a crown, within a shield. The keys refer to the promise of Christ to Peter, the chief apostle, whom Jesus left here on earth as the leader and head of His Church. (Matthew: 16 vs 19) I will entrust to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you declare bound on earth shall be bound in heaven; whatever you declare loosed on earth shall be loosed in heaven. The keys are a symbol of the power that the church believes that Christ gave to Saint Peter. The mitre symbolises our standing as a school of the Diocese of Johannesburg. The crossed keys are worn over the heart reminding the children, not only of Saint Peter, but also of the values that are never negotiable as we walk the road of life. The St Peter s Keys Promise : Today, I promise to be respectful of others and my world I show resilience in all that I do I am tolerant of and love my neighbour I act with honesty, integrity and humility at all times I show courage in the face of adversity I remain loyal to the values of St Peter s School. School closes at 11:00 tomorrow after the Inter-house netball. D.Webb REQUEST: CHRISTMAS MARKET VOLUNTEER We are looking for a person to co-ordinate the Christmas Market on Saturday, 2 December The market is held on the afternoon (14:00 18:00) of the St Peter s Sunset Carols, which start at 18:00). The aim of the market is to sell products that would appeal to all ages and a range of gift ideas, especially as it is close to Christmas. The Market Volunteer will register the vendors and, with a dedicated team, co-ordinate the vendors on the day. Please Monica if you are interested in volunteering to help put the Christmas Market together - msloane@stpeters.co.za Monica Sloane (Foundation Manager) SPORTS DEPARTMENT The Inter-house netball will take place on Friday, 23 June from 09:00-11:00 on the netball courts. All girls are to please change into their sports kit and house t-shirts after Chapel and report directly to the courts. All girls from Grade 3-7 will be playing. Parents are welcome to come and watch. From Monday, 3 July, we will be playing hockey in all sports lessons. Girls are to have their own stick, shin pads and gum guard for hockey and they must please remember to bring their hat and water bottle to all lessons. 4 DIVERSITY GENDER SENSITIVITY WEEK: St Peter s boys and girls focused on love, care and support for the opposite gender. Gender bias, stereotyping and the use of appropriate language, especially in the presence of women, was also highlighted at assembly talks. EID AL -FITR: Best wishes to all our Muslim parents and pupils as they celebrate Eid this weekend after the monthlong Ramadaan fast. Eid Mubarak!!! 6 GRADE 5 SOUP INITIATIVE! Thank you to our Grade 5 girls for providing nutritious soup as their community initiative during the winter months. The soup is distributed to the Khulani (meaning growth ) Early Childhood Development Centres, in Diepsloot. Thank you to the volunteer mums for assisting on the operational side.
