2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The St. Christopher's School Foundation is organized to promote the welfare of organizations that qualify as exempt organizations to include the educational ministry and development of St. Christopher's School. St. Christopher's School prepares a talented and diverse group of boys for college and for life in an everchanging world. Through a rigorous academic program and a supportive community experience, the School fosters personal integrity and honor, the achievement of each boy's full potential, love of learning, spiritual growth, respect for others, leadership and civic responsibility. St. Christopher's strives for excellence and seeks to make an enduring difference in the lives of its boys. Background Dr. Churchill Gibson Chamberlayne founded St. Christopher s School in 1911 as The Chamberlayne School. With Dr. Chamberlayne as its first Headmaster, the school opened with 16 boys and was located at 3311 Grove Avenue. The school moved to its present location on St. Christopher s Road in Richmond in On June 11, 1920, a system of church schools was established by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, at which time The Chamberlayne School was renamed St. Christopher's School. The spirit of the old school and its motto remained the same: the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Dr. Chamberlayne was succeeded by Dr. John Page Williams in 1940, Robert Wilder Bugg in 1951, Warren P. Elmer in 1964, George J. McVey in 1973, and Charles M. Stillwell in St. Christopher's is one of six schools in Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia. The other schools are St. Catherine s School in Richmond, Christchurch School in Christchurch, St. Margaret s School in Tappahannock, St. Stephen s & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, and Stuart Hall in Staunton. Impact Economic circumstances in recent years provided an opportunity for St. Christopher's to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to preserving the integrity and quality of the School's program. The experience of the boys each day has never wavered. They have continued to benefit from special relationships with their teachers that are reinforced in our small classes, the breadth of our academic program, and an important array of opportunities for extracurricular and community involvement. During this time of examination and self-reflection, it has become especially clear that our mission to educate the "Whole Boy" and to foster the academic skills and personal qualities that will prepare boys to serve as effective and meaningful leaders in this changing, 21st century world has never been more important. As new situations and circumstances arise, our boys will rely on the intelligence, strength of character, commitment to serving others, and ability to work collaboratively to solve challenging and complex problems that they developed while at St. Christopher's.
