LEARNING PROGRESS Primary staff invite parents and guardians to make an appointment to discuss the learning progress of your daughter/s. Please negotiate a time with your daughter s teacher which is convenient for you. Students are encouraged to be present for these meetings and to participate in the discussion. Issues which require privacy should be discussed in a separate meeting. We are also very grateful to the Hudson family (owners of CQ Party Hire) for their generous donation of the disco equipment for the Primary disco in the afternoon of the last day of School. GETTING ACTIVE This term the Prep to Year 6 students have been involved in the Get Active Program. At times, there have been up to 40 girls participating in a range of fun games designed to get them active. It has been wonderful to see the Prep students who have participated and have begun fine tuning their motor skills. Interim Reports will be available for collection when you attend your Parent/Teacher/Student learning conversations during Term 2. EASTER BONNET PARADE AND DISCO On Thursday 28 March we are holding an Easter Bonnet Parade in the CAB area beginning at 1.20pm. After the parade, the girls will dance the afternoon away at a disco which will be held in the Mouritz Multipurpose Hall. We extend our thanks to the Primary Student Council for organising this exciting event. The Eagle Game has been very popular and the obstacle course was a great success. This cocurricular activity runs from on Thursday afternoons and will continue in Term 2. If you would like your daughter to attend this activity please contact Scott Fuller.

2 The obstacle course was so popular that it has been set up at lunch times this week with most of the primary girls taking the opportunity to test themselves. HARMONY DAY The whole school participated in Harmony Day. This day provides an opportunity for us all to reflect on the many and varied cultural backgrounds within our Girls Grammar family. It is designed to promote tolerance and a deeper understanding of cultural differences. FRIDAY AFTERNOON SPORT On Friday afternoons, students in Years 5, 6 &7 played Tee Ball and Softball against other schools in The Greater Rockhampton and District Interschool Sporting Competition. Unfortunately, due to the weather the girls have been able to play only one game and have had to do training and a variety of Physical activity lessons. The Year 7 students have enjoyed playing a modified softball game which assists in their skill development. In Term 2 students will participate in The Greater Rockhampton and Districts Primary Netball competition. This competition will involve Year 5, 6 7 students and will be held at Jardine Park on Friday afternoons between 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Hopefully the weather allows our girls the opportunity to represent Girls Grammar against other schools from this district. A draw and team list will be published early next term. On Harmony Day the students experienced different cultures and a sample of their cuisine. Small groups of students had to solve a riddle to find the next location, and each site represented a different country. They then had to follow their map to locate the display and receive their next clue. All the students travelled around the school sampling food and activities.

3 A popular highlight was Spain s offering, the running with the balls activity. However, please ask your daughter which was her favourite experience because they were all thoughtful and enjoyable. moved through 12 activities involving interactive mathematics. Congratulations and thanks to the wonderful Year 11 students and their Care Mentors Peter Cox, Mark Avery and Anita Loader for organising a very memorable Harmony Day. ROBO-TECH On Wednesday 13 March Girls Grammar was visited by Robo-Tech, a performance which explores the field of robotics, electronics, innovation and design. Presenter Kyle commented on how well our students worked together to solve difficult mathematical problems. The girls enjoyed solving problems in a variety of ways. Thanks to Melanie Brooks, Senior Mathematics teacher, for organising such an innovative educational experience for our Primary students. The girls met Algatron, a 65 kilogram robot who sang, danced and conversed with show presenter, Marshall. This performance was made available by the School Performance Tours Organisation and enabled students to extend their understanding of science and technology. I enjoyed the letter box activity the most. We had to write a sum without the function and our partners had to work out what the function was. - Isla Houston Year 6[SF1] All the girls had an enjoyable afternoon which was rich in learning with many laughs. FUN WITH MATHS Numeracy was very much in action on Monday with all Primary classes involved in the Fun with Maths sessions. Each Primary class enjoyed two hours of problem solving and creative thinking when they I loved the activity where two people were chained together and had to work out how to escape using

4 Maths. Anna and I couldn t do it, but we had fun trying. - Mackenzie Morgan Year 6 WOOLWORTHS VOUCHERS The school has received 14 boxes of resources from last year s Woolworths Earn and Learn Program. Through your kind donation of grocery dockets, Girls Grammar has received many educational resources which will be utilised in classrooms. DISTRICT PRIMARY CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING Thank you to Mr John Mouritz for his coordination of Girls Grammar s involvement with this program in The three highest primary student collectors will be presented with a gift of recognition at our next Primary Assembly. TERM 2 NUMERACY TUTORING Each Wednesday afternoon in Term 2, Primary students in Years 3 to 6 will be offered numeracy tutoring with Scott Fuller. Students who will benefit from consolidation will be invited to attend. If you would like your daughter to receive numeracy tutoring please have a conversation with her classroom teacher. Numbers will be limited so that students have the opportunity to receive personalised coaching. Next term Joel Morrison and Scott Fuller will offer running training as part of the range of cocurricular activities. Students in Year 5, 6 &7 are invited to attend in preparation for selection trials for District Cross Country events later in Term 2. Girls who are interested in trying out for the Cross Country team are encouraged to begin running during the holidays under the direction and supervision of parents prior to the commencement of formal training. UNIFORM SHOP Uniform items are available from the P&F Uniform Shop - Phone/Fax The Uniform Shop is operated by the RGGS Parents and Friends Association. Located in the centre of the School, the shop stocks all approved uniform items (except school shoes). The shop sells uniforms (new and second hand), stationery and toiletries. The shop manager will be pleased to assist you with your particular needs. The P&F Uniform Shop gives all families the option of setting up a trading account. This account operates on the basis of a cash, cheque (payable to RGGS P&F Trading Account) or money order payment as a credit at the shop. A statement is

5 issued at the end of each semester to families with a trading account. Payment for goods over the phone by either debit card or credit card is also very welcome. Students from Prep to Year 6 will be reminded by their teacher to collect items from the shop when they are available. The shop is open on school days at morning tea and lunchtime, as well as for extended times during the first and last weeks of the summer holidays. Please contact School Reception to confirm opening times. Shop hours on normal school days are 9.30am- 1.30pm. On Boarder Return days at the beginning of each term hours are 10.30am-3.30pm. School badges, House badges and lanyards are also available from the P&F Uniform Shop. HEALTHY EATING Over the past two weeks in Care Group Year 3 have been examining Healthy Food options. The girls have identified why they should eat healthy food and how healthy food can be fun. Last Friday the students brought in what they thought was a healthy snack to share with the class. They also got the opportunity to make Vietnamese rice paper rolls in class, which they all enjoyed. Year 3 is now compiling a recipe book of their ideas. OUT OF HOURS CARE We will continue to offer Before School Supervised Play in Term 2 free of charge. We thank Anoja DeSilver for her gentle and vigilant care in the mornings throughout Term 1. For students in Year P-6 we offer After School Care which includes a Homework Club and afternoon tea. There is a fee for this service and students attending must be registered with OSHC. The library is not available to Primary students in the afternoons, as tutorials are held in the library for students in Years 7-12 between pm. EASTER WISHES Term 1 has been a busy and exciting time for the girls in Primary School. The break provides a wonderful time for relaxation and family fun. We wish all Girls Grammar families a safe and happy Easter. Please note that the School term finishes on Thursday 28 March, as Friday 29 is Good Friday and a public holiday.
