1 THE DISTRICT A Weekly Update from Governor Brenda Walker June 3, 2013 Governor s Message What a weekend! We started by installing the leadership team for and our next Governor David Johnson. Following the installation we traveled on to Galveston to join the fun as we celebrated their club centennial. Both events were wonderful and memorable for all who attended. I still have a few action packed weeks left as Governor before joining the PDG ranks and will continue to share our stories until my final edition of The District on June 30th. 2 Bryan Club President Shelley & Andrew Nelson hosted a group of Rotarians on the eve of Governor-Elect David Johnsons installation. Rotarian Wade Beckman prepared the delicious food from his restaurant The Shipwreck Grill. 3 Governor-Elect David Johnson was duly installed as our District Governor for The ceremony was held at Christopher s World Grille in Bryan. PDG Emken Linton served as Master of Ceremonies and PDG Roger McCabe conducted the installation. Governor Brenda presented the Governor s pin and jewel of office to Governor David. The event concluded with gospel music performed by Voices 4 from Christ United Methodist Church. Governor David is a member of the quartet. Congratulations David and best of luck for a super year!

6 Our outbound Youth Exchange students met at Camp Allen near Navasota for a weekend of training before they depart later this summer to new global homes and families. Joining YE Chairman Glen Mattingly and wife Carol to assist with the training were: PDG Ulli Budelmann, Governor Nominee Designate Doris Lockey, AG Chris Turner, Birda Gaskin (Host YE Mom Extraordinaire), and Betsy Hoffman. We hope our students will have the adventure of a lifetime and know they will represent Rotary District 5910 as Ambassadors of goodwill and friendship! God Bless and safe travel.

8 The Rotary Club of Galveston celebrated their 100th year with a dinner held at Moody Gardens Flora Ballroom. President Tom LaRue presided. RI Director Andy Smallwood and wife Anita (right) attended along with numerous Past District Governor s from both Districts 5910 and 5890 (Houston). Fred Raschke was the keynote speaker and presented a humorous talk about the club s history. More pictures will follow in next Monday s newsletter.

9 Seven BISD Middle School students received scholarships from the club. Pictured are (from left to right): Front Row - Victoria Blankenship, Yesenia Loza, Molly Tucker, Kayla Thomas. Back Row - Roland Lee, Scholarship Chairman Lester Smith, Adrian Ramos, and Ernesto Miranda. Tammy Trevino (pictured third from the right) announced the three Rotary-honored Teachers of the Year. Brian Moran (pictured second from the left) was honored as the Elementary School Teach of the year for school year. He has taught for 14 years, the last six as the band director at Collins Intermediate. Amy Perez (pictured fourth from the left) was recognized for her dedication and positive impact on the students at Caney Creek High School as the Secondary School Teacher of the year. Ms. Perez is a World History teacher to sophomores. And Charlton Hughes (second from the right) was honored as The Woodlands Christian Academy's Teacher of the Year. As their band teacher, he has grown the program from six musicians to mover than 70 in a two year period. The Rotary is proud to honor each of these teachers.

10 I m really proud of our District numbers! Let s ENGAGE our new members as well and focus on RETENTION in order to continue this growth trend. In there were 2,769 members in District 5910! Tell the Rotary story and invite someone to your club meeting. Let s continue to bring service minded individuals into Rotary. Thanks to PDG Rose Austin for her leadership with the Ignite program.
