1 The Weekly Publication of the Rotary Club of Western Fort Worth, Texas, USA January 17, 2017 Volume 65, Issue 27 Founded March 25, 1952 Chartered May 13, 1952 Western ROTO A note from our Incoming District Governor As we move into the new year, 2017, you have an opportunity to renew the commitment to humanity that brought you into Rotary and has maintained your membership and efforts thus far throughout the years. The fact remains, there is no other organization in the world that affects the lives of people like Rotary International. This is accomplished through the selfless acts of the Rotarians in Rotary International District 5790; you and your Club. As the District Governor for I am hoping to garner the support of 100% of the Rotarians in our District to make an impact in your local communities and the world. To this effort, I am looking for dedicated Rotarians that have the calling to do more at the District level to change humanity. There are a few positions at the District level that need to be filled... ARE YOU THAT ROTARIAN? Having been a Rotarian for 13 years and being introduced to Rotary vis-a-vis a Polio National Immunization Day (NID) in Kolkata India in 2004 I have been fortunate enough to see the impact of the efforts of Rotarians in District 5790 on humanity multiple times. For everything YOU have done thus far, on behalf of humanity and the world, I thank you. However, our dedication to humanity is not over but rather, just beginning. I am looking forward to serving as your District Governor in July We have some phenomenal goals and objectives for District 5790, and we need YOUR help to achieve those goals and objectives. Please (continued on page 2) JANUARY IS... VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH

We dined very tastefully in the Davey O Brien Room at the Fort Worth Club. Thanks, Russell! The normal beginnings took place, approval of the two sets of minutes in December, and the financial report. The Attendance Report showed our club with 48 members and a monthly percentage of 88.8 for December. The past sixmonth average was 92.0%. We heard an update from Marvin Walters on our Ambassadorial Scholar, Portia Martin. Some discussion ensued regarding a revamping of our program committee for the balance of the year. PDG Joe Orr was granted a three-month medical leave of absence. Our February 13 th meeting of the board will be hosted by Dena Newell, location to be announced. 2 District 5790 Treasurer ROB SEAY Assistant Governor for Fort Worth Clubs ROGER PASCHAL Fort Worth International C A R D D R A W I N G $313 in the kitty Last Selector: ED WUESTE

3 Last Meeting s Review Kathryn Davis President We had a small but great group last week as we returned to Rotary after three loooooong weeks on hiatus! It was good to get back into the groove and to wish all who attended a Happy New Year! Prez Kathryn updated us on the condition of our fellow Rotarian, Bob Damon (see page 4). She then introduced our first speaker, Portia Martin, who is our club s Ambassadorial Scholar. She would like to attend the University of Copenhagen. She has a backup plan, however, and that is to go to Canberra, Australia. Her trip whichever is selected will begin sometime next summer. Portia spent a couple of days in Houston at an orientation session for Scholars. She met a lot of other scholars and learned a great deal about what she is about to embark. A number of questions followed her talk. We then heard a classification talk by our newest member, Kyle Watkins. He joined our club in October 2015 with the classification of F i n a n c i a l S e r v i c e s / Management. He originally came from Choctaw, Oklahoma. He attended the Air Force Academy, ended up at Oklahoma University, and finally to Fort Worth. He is married with a daughter and a son. Portia Martin (top photo), and Kyle Watkins Kyle told us about his career in finances. He is on a program that serves less than 50 families. His income comes only from those families. It was interesting to hear of his job description. We may get to hear more about this when Kyle brings us a couple of his friends in the same profession for a program in the next few weeks. We thank both Portia and Kyle for sharing with us. Programs January 17, 2017 DON REYNOLDS Economist Have a Chuckle! He sleeps most of the afternoon. Kathryn says Bob has a strong will to live. Please keep Bob in your daily prayers, as well as that of his wife, Bobbie.
