TWO District 5330 Rotarians in Rose Parade DG Joe Ramos, Chair District PI Committee Did you see the 126 th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan 1? Yes, you would have seen two members of our Rotary District 5330 actually participating in the parade: Jennifer Smith, club President of RC Temecula New Generations and Past District Governor Joe Ramos of RC Lake Arrowhead. There were 8 Rotarians on the float and 8 walking next to the float. Viewed by 400 million people in over 100 countries and broadcast in 11 languages Rotary gets exposed throughout the world. Just imagine what a 30+ second ad on the Super Bowl would cost. What great publicity for Rotary and in particular our District 5330 being the only District with 2 participants. This year s Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee s entry into the Rose Parade focuses on our projects that give communities the ability to develop and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems and support studies related to water and sanitation. Some of the clubs in our District 5330 that helped decorate the float were RC Riverside East, Riverside, Rim of the World High School, Temecula New Generations, RC Coachella Valley/Desert Mirage, Big Bear, Yucaipa, Lake Arrowhead, including DG Shab and Bricia. For more information on the Rotary Float visit You will see video and photo coverage of the float to include photos of our volunteer preparers, bios of the Float riders and out walkers, and other interesting facts. 7 EXPANDING YOUR CLUB S VISIBILITY Not only do we need to improve our internal communications BUT we need to expand/extend our communications into our communities! Clearly this is an area that badly needs attention. Raising the visibility of your Club needs to become a Top Priority The opportunities for increasing your Club s public visibility are surprisingly abundant. Your Club s name and gooddeeds need to be constantly and consistently seen -- in your community -- throughout the year! There are multiple vehicles that can help to raise your Club s community visibility: Develop a closer relationship with your Chambers of Commerce. They will often show our Logo on their website and possibly a hot-link to our website. Submit Articles/Flyers of your events. You can easily get on their Calendar. They are good partners for joint Events They often can process online Event payments. Attend their meetings --- Face-time to briefly promote upcoming Events. Joint Newspaper advertising. Put their Events in to your web calendar. Have them send -blasts to their community database. Over time, they can become a valued asset for your Club. Each City also has a website and usually a dedicated PR person. Many of the same collaboration opportunities as with the Chamber. Your City really wants to work with you. They are motivated - if you do well they do well. Often they have some form of Newsletter which is perfect for our Articles and Event Notices. The City has FREE Event venues. Cities have annual Grant Money -- which can be used to support local charitable causes. Piggy-back on the Cities promotions. The City Parks & Recreation Department is a minipowerhouse for promoting your Event at their facility. The will provide designated hi-traffic areas where Clubs can place event brochures. They will include you Event into their highly publicized Calendar. Newspaper/Magazine are excellent for publishing in-print and online Rotary s good-works stories in the community. But you must find the appropriate Editor. Then call, , send promo-packs pitch hard.if you have a nice Promo-Pac for your Event send it to both Editor and the designated Reporter. Also contact your local TV News. Both Publications and TV News will often send reporters and photographers to cover you event. Celebrities send your Promo-Pac to local clebs. Promote the Clebs in your Flyers. Celebs lend credibility to your event and are a good attendance draw. Paid promotion Local Newspapers or Magazines -- of any size may be a good investment if they reach your desired audience. (get their Non-Profit discount) Often they will do all of the art-work for your ad that may be re-use in your Promo-Pacs. All of this needed Community Visibility further emphasizes the need for an active Public Image Director within every Club. Consistent Community Presence One way to truly increase your Club s visibility in your community to have some sort of event, every month. These events must each be basically planned and included in your Annual Club Plan. Then designate the Chairs for each Event. Repeated exposure on a consistent basis and regularly getting out into the community will ultimately yield fantastic results! Author: Gary Tyer Service with Passion 7

ROTARY DISTRICT 5330 FACEBOOK JOE RAMOS, PDG, CHAIR DISTRICT PUBLIC IMAGE Do you know what most the successful clubs last year awarded for great service, increasing membership, and increasing Foundation giving have in common? They communicate with their members through multiple media s, newsletters, websites, Facebook, YouTube, etc. And they all publicize in their local community newspapers and magazines. Does your club use other sources of communication beyond s? If so, are they kept up with current information? One of the trends gaining momentum is using social media such as Facebook, where good stories with photos and videos are easily posted by ANY member. You do not need a focal point to gather, edit and publish a story you can easily do it with your own computer. Our District has a Facebook group account Rotary District 5330 and we also have a number of RYLA District 5330 accounts. We started with 180 members in Jun 2013 and ended with 433 in July Currently at 480, 1 out every 4 Rotarians in our District is a member. This is great when compared to other Districts. However, although there are many posts daily, less than 10% of members actually post an event monthly For those who are members and have not posted, we encourage you to post your club s great service projects, new members, Foundation recognitions, Fundraisers, etc. This site belongs to ALL of you. If you want to see the latest information go on the District Facebook. Anyone can view it but only members can post or follow it. If you are not sure you are a member, click where it gives the number of members and look for your name. If you are not a member, click join group and our Facebook guru PDG Mark Howison will add you. What many do not know is that unlike your other personal posts on your site that go to your friends, it does not get posted on this group site unless you share it to this group or post it on this group. It is a standalone site. Conversely, if you post here and also want it on your personal site, you need to share or repost on your site. Our District Staff can also use this District Facebook site to see what clubs are doing in their respective Services. The information is kept indefinitely, so a wealth of photos, videos and stories are archived for presentation material. If you are not a Facebook user and want to post your projects, you need to first sign up for Facebook and get login info on your account. Your personal page should be what you want your friends to see vs the group. Rotary District 5330 should be only for Rotary related items. For more information, you can google how to use Facebook. 10 Guatemala Literacy Project - Rotary Club of La Quinta SHARING THE GIFT OF LITERACY THROUGH PARTNERING Imagine trying to learn in a country where over 90% of the schools lack textbooks or the most basic library books. Imagine trying to succeed and compete in the world economy when more than 95% of your country s youth population has never used a computer. This is the sad reality for the children of Guatemala, a country with one of the lowest literacy rates in the Western Hemisphere. With three out of four adults unable to read or write in some regions, children are raised in homes where neither parent is able to read to them or help them as they struggle to learn and grow. These children will potentially be stuck in a cycle of illiteracy and poverty, unable to read, to learn, and to thrive in the world around them. Fortunately, over 350 Rotary Clubs from North America are doing all that they can to end this repressive cycle. This project is the perfect example of how Rotary Clubs can partner to accomplish great things. The Guatemala Literacy Project The goal of the Guatemala Literacy Project is to ensure that no child in Guatemala grows up without the gift of both traditional and technological literacy. Founded in 1996, this project provides badly needed textbooks, library materials, and computer centers to underprivileged children in Guatemala. If the world is to become a better place, education of the next generation will be the key. While one person cannot change the world, one person can change the opportunities that are available to the children of the world, one school at a time. How It Works The Guatemala Literacy Project, which is implemented jointly by North American and Guatemalan Rotary Clubs and the Cooperative for Education (Coed), matches Rotary Clubs with underprivileged schools in Guatemala. The Rotary Clubs raise funds to purchase textbooks, library materials, and computers for their schools. One of the reasons that this project has made such a significant impact is that 100% of the funds collected go to the hard costs of the project; not a single penny is used for administration or fundraising. Service with Passion 10

Guatemala Literacy Project - Rotary Club of La Quinta (continued) Empowering the Guatemalan People One interesting factor in the ongoing success of the Guatemala Literacy Project is the fact that each school s program is financially self-sufficient. Rental programs are established at each school in which students pay a small fee to use a set of textbooks or the computer centers. So, after the initial donation, the projects are selfsustaining and the local Guatemalan community is responsible for maintaining the books and computers. This self-sufficiency component empowers the local people to help themselves in improving academic opportunities for their children. Planting the Seed for a Lifetime of Learning Twice each year, volunteers travel to Guatemala to personally deliver textbooks, computers, and other supplies to the schools and computer centers supported by the Guatemala Literacy Project. In the past 18 years, over 300 Rotary volunteers have traveled to Guatemala to plant the seed for a lifetime of learning. How to Get Involved To learn more about the Guatemala Literacy Project, visit or contact Dick and Helen Anderson, Rotary Club of La Quinta at Anderassociates@aol.com. They would be happy to do a program at your club and share with you how the power of partnering has worked. Dick and Helen will be leaving for Guatemala in February for their 11 th trip in support of this project. GIVE TODAY Service with Passion 11

ROTARACT District 5330 ROTARACT District 5330 will be represented by two members of Rotaract at the Rotary International Rotaract Pre Convention and Rotary Convention in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Under District Governor Shab s initiation and support and Jim Bacca s (President of Sunrise Rotary Club) encouragement and leadership we have developed a new program for Rotaract in the District it is to send two members of the District Rotaract clubs to the Rotaract Pre-Convention and the Rotary International Convention in Brazil in June. The planning had to move quickly. We received five applications all were incredible students. Making the selection was difficult. Thank you to the selection committee: Bob Heinze, Redlands Club, Jim Bacca, Redlands Sunrise and me as District Rotaract Chair. Governor Shab was able to be present for some of the interviews. The final selection is Laura Romer, University of Redlands Rotaract Club and Adrian Valadez, CS University San Bernardino, Rotaract Club. Our congratulations go to these talented and dedicated young people. Laura Romer is a senior at the University of Redlands and will graduate in April 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a business administration minor. She joined the Redlands Rotaract Club in November 2011 and served as secretary (fall 2012) and president (spring 2013 and fall 2014). Laura has been involved with many fundraising projects for club. Rotary plays a big part in her family. Her grandfather Wray Cornwell is a member of the San Marino Rotary Club. Her younger brother Colin, a freshman at the University, is also a member of Rotaract. Glenn, Laura's youngest brother, is a member of Interact. Laura grew up in Highlands Ranch, CO and now lives in Orange, CA. Her ultimate career goal is to work in the United States Foreign Service. Adrian Valadez has been involved with Rotary District 5330 for the past 7 years starting with Riverside Poly's Interact club. There, she was a chairman for the annual Tour de Riverside where she raised over $15,000 for the event. She attended RYLA as a high school junior and then became President of the Interact club shortly after. Adrian is responsible for founding California State University, San Bernardino's current Rotaract club and acted as President during the very next year. She is currently acting as a Vice President Assistant and mentor for the current executive board. She will be graduating from the university in June with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies. She is currently working on her honor's thesis and is hoping to attend Arizona State University in the fall to pursue a PhD. in Counseling Psychology. Both Laura and Adrian have agreed to be available to come to District Conference in May and participate in club visits as their schedule will permit. This program is being funded outside the District budget. We are seeking support from clubs who have an interest in seeing young people like this continue their Rotary journey From her short bio above one sees how Adrian s involvement in Interact has motivated her to take a major leadership role in Rotaract. In Laura s case her family connections with Rotary inspired her involvement with Rotaract. We think their attendance at the Rotaract Pre Convention and Rotary Conventions will be life changing. If there are any clubs who would be willing to help sponsor this experience for them please contact Susan Kean, Rotaract District Chair. Service with Passion 12

Students Receive Hundreds of Books from PS Rotary Club Students at Cahuilla Elementary School were the lucky recipients of hundreds of free books from the Rotary Club of Palm Springs on Wednesday morning. An annual service project of the Club, the "Great American Book Giveaway" members distributed two books per child from kindergarten through fifth grade at the elementary school. Age appropriate books were chosen for each grade level. "Members of our club volunteer at the school on a regular basis, but we especially enjoy this event as it involves all of the students and the holiday season adds to the fun and excitement," said Milt Levinson, Past President of the Rotary Club of Palm Springs who leads the project. "It is also gratifying to know that often these books are shared with students' family, particularly siblings who may not have books of their own. Our club and Rotary International strongly believe that literacy is so very important in the development of children, and we enjoy playing a part in that effort locally." The annual event is in its sixth year and has benefitted approximately 4,500 students since its inception. The average value of the books distributed is about $17,000 annually. In September the same club provided 120 dictionaries to third grade students, 120 World Atlases to all fourth grade students and 120 Thesauruses to all fifth grade students at the school. Thomas Smith, President of the Rotary Club of Palm Springs said, "Where the reference books distributed at the start of the school year are tools to help the students in their classwork, the books distributed on December 10th will provide the students with leisure and fiction based books to enjoy over the holi- day Service with Passion 16
