Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of the College Stations of the Cross The Stations of the Cross, held in the College Hall at the beginning of Holy Week was a beautiful depiction of the Easter narrative up to the crucifixion. The dignity of the students was captivating. Together with the narration, the lighting and the haunting music, the gathered audience was reminded of the poignancy of the Easter story, the sacrifice of Jesus and the anticipation and hope of the resurrection. I acknowledge the Religious Education, Creative Arts and VET faculties for their contributions to such a meaningful event and I thank the staff, parents and friends of our community who joined us for the evening. Avenues to Learning Year 12 Half Yearly Examinations Our Year 12 students continue their HSC journey this week with the beginning of the Half-Yearly Examinations. This exam period provides the opportunity for students to further their study skills and their examination technique. I spoke to the students before the beginning of the first English paper to wish them well on behalf of the St Peter s community and reminded them of the importance of looking after themselves with healthy eating, plenty of rest and a minimum of distractions. Year 7 and 8 Outdoor Program The Outdoor Education Program of St Peter s has a long history and is built on a philosophy which recognises the camps as integral to the whole development of the person, especially in regard to social and emotional development and stewardship of the natural environment. The Year 7 Camp is on this week at Southern Cross Outdoor Education Centre at Somersby. After many years this camp venue is closing. I would like to acknowledge the wonderful support that Southern Cross has provided for the St Peter s Outdoor Education Program and thank all the staff for the strong relationship that has been forged with the St Peter s students and staff.

Next week our Year 8 students head north to Aussie Bush Camp for the last four days of term. This is always a most enjoyable experience for our students. I thank our staff for their significant and unpaid generosity in accompanying our students to both camps. Year 7 and 8 Study Skills In these final two weeks of term our Year 7 and 8 students participate in the College Study Skills Program. This program acknowledges that the skills necessary for success in later years do not suddenly develop in Year 11 and 12 but are built and refined progressively over all the years of high school. Our students are provided with explicit information about skills of research, note taking, summarising and reading for meaning with hands on activities. I encourage parents and carers to talk to their sons and daughters about what they learned. I wish all students a very happy holiday. For families who may be travelling I wish you a safe journey and time away filled with many memories. Michelle Peters Principal From the Assistant Principal St Peter s Family Network Meeting The second St Peter s Family Network Meeting of the year was held last week when 25 parents / carers of our Year 7 students were instructed by Catholic Schools Office (CSO) personnel on the workings of their child s Lenovo tablet. The night was very successful with a large number of the parents who attended the evening commenting most enthusiastically on the presentation. I hope that the Year 7 students are engaged more fully in their learning as a result of their use of the tablet in class and at home. The College School Improvement Plan As explained previously we at St Peter s endeavour to systematically improve our College each year. We do this via our College School Improvement Plan (SIP). I will endeavour to remind parents and carers of this throughout the year. We set a three year SIP goal and each year we set targets to achieve so that we reach our Goal by the end of Goals are set in three areas; Mission; Learning and Teaching; and Pastoral Care and Well-being. The targets for 2016 are Mission: 1) By the end of 2016: a. There is a statement articulating the identity of St Peter s b. The 3 core values of the college are demonstrated and celebrated through a program of annual events 2) Learning & Teaching: By the end of 2016: a. 75% of students know and are able to use the TEEL Process when writing paragraphs. b. 75% of Years 7 and 9 Literacy work samples show an improvement of at least one grade in paragraphing and ideas based on the benchmark task. c. 75% of students have continued stanine growth In PAT-R results throughout Years ) Pastoral Care and Well-being: By the end of 2016: a. For the staff, students and parents/ carers to use a common language and action in regards to the elements of the Pastoral Care and Well-being initiatives used in the College b. For the staff to be given professional Learning Opportunities to develop their understanding of the concepts and actions associated with Restorative Justice, Mindmatters, Student Coaching and the Role of the Homeroom Teacher c. For 75% of all students to be able to articulate the link between wellbeing and learning.

Year 12 and Year 11 Examinations My best wishes to the Year 12 students as they undertake their Half-Yearly examinations and my best wishes also to the Year 11 students who begin their Half- Yearly examinations next Term. Just like the Year 12 students, the Year 11 students are only required to be at school when they have an examination to complete. This is the first time in their schooling that students have responsibility for arriving for exams on time especially afternoon exams. It is important that all students organise their time effectively. It is an important step in a student s development towards adulthood as they reach the realisation that they are the most important factor in academic achievement. All students should now be involving themselves in regular revision of their work in preparation for their exams. Uniform With the change of term approaching it is important to highlight some important points concerning the wearing of the College Winter Uniform. The College s Winter Uniform is to be worn for all of Terms 2 and 3. All students are expected to wear the College blazer to and from school every day. They should wear their blazer to Year/ School Assemblies and to Homeroom. After Homeroom/Assemblies the students are permitted to remove their blazer if it is too warm to be wearing it Male students are to wear their College tie at all times. The top button of their shirt should be done up and the tie worn correctly Female students are to wear Ink Navy 70 denier opaque tights (no socks) A point worthy of mention is the length of the girls winter skirts. (For our senior students this includes both winter and summer uniform as the skirt is worn all year.) Our uniform has been designed to be both flattering and elegant and to fit well with the lines of the college shirt and college blazer. The length of the skirt should be below the knee. Underpinning the design and the rules about wearing the uniform is the goal that our female students present themselves in a manner that displays class and style. A reminder that now is an ideal time to prepare and plan your child s winter uniform. Ensuring that your child has the complete winter uniform or having the uniform dry-cleaned should all be completed before the start of Term 2. Peter Higgins Assistant Principal Stage 5 Stage 5 Academic Success Congratulations to the following students who have been commended by their teachers for their enthusiasm and commitment to their learning. I hope you and your family have shared a relaxing and enjoyable Easter break. Great news, we have made it through 9 weeks of school already and are now on the downward slope of what has been a very busy and exciting Term 1 for the Year 10 students. I am always surprised when I check the calendar and see just how many events, assessment tasks and excursions are happening in a two week period at the school. Students have a lot of assessment tasks due at this time and are feeling quite stressed and overwhelmed. Please keep an eye out for signs of stress and anxiety. If there are any concerns please contact myself or Sharon Rochford. I would recommend that students create an assessment calendar every term that helps them keep track of due dates and heavier times of the year. 5 Wellbeing for Learning This Wednesday we are launching the House Games, an initiative in Year 9 and 10 to engage the Houses of St Peter s in some friendly rivalry and point collection with some awesome awards at the end of the year up for grabs. There are 8 games that the students will be competing in, including 3 point toss, horse shoe challenge, general knowledge test, rubix cube, and footy toss. There is something for everyone and we are very excited for the launch tomorrow. Student Accomplishments Jose Atayde has been selected in the Australian Under 17 Futsal National Team that will represent Australia in the Futsal World Cup in Paraguay in July This is a significant accomplishment and we all wish Jose all the best in this upcoming event. Easter Liturgy As a year group, we were very proud of the students in Mrs Crawley s Drama class who acted out the Easter Liturgy last Thursday in the Hall. The students performed in a professional manner, and showcased their talents to the entire school. Lauren Winsor, Hunter Turnbull, James Kampas, Kailea Keyes, Caitlin Andrews, Sarah Buckton, Madelen Savka, Kristen Barry, Rayelle Payne, Samantha Dean, Lucy Reader and Briahna Duggan. A special mention to Olivia Stoltz who had the courage to stand at the microphone and run the Easter Liturgy performance. She did an extraordinary job and is a credit to this year group, well done Olivia. Handball Tournament The tournament has begun! We started our first round of singles elimination last week. We kicked those Year 9 s (nicely) from Francis square and took over the old handball stomping ground. Music was playing, sportsmanship soaring and cheering was heard as 70 students both male and female participated in the competition. As the bell came looming we had a Female Grand Final with Brodie Walters playing Olivia Kernick (Title Holder), the match drew a big crowd of support with Olivia finally taking down Brodie in a tight match. The Male Grand Final was held later in the week. Curtis Field had a Broken Bay Swimming date he could not miss, leaving Luke Brown with an extra day warming up his power hand. The Grand Final was a superb match with Luke scoring a victory in a heated decider, both men shook hands and congratulated one another after the event. Thank you Tyler Scrine for commentating this game, you definitely added some extra light to the match. Pizza was awarded today to the reigning King Luke and Queen Olivia of Year 10 Handball. Doubles competition starts Thursday lunch time with 40 students signed up. We will be having a Year 9 and 10 competition next term, with some bigger prizes at stake. It has been a wonderful term getting to know the year group, I have said it a number of times before but they are a special bunch. As always my s and phones are always open and ready to have a chat if needed. Wish you a happy fortnight and a great Term 1 holiday (woooo hooo!) Rebecca Parrish Year 10 Co-ordinator

Stage 4 I hope that Easter was a time that the whole family enjoyed. It is hard to imagine the first term at St Peter s will be finished in two weeks. It did not seem that long ago that the current Year 7 students were sitting in Patrick Square, waiting in anticipation, for the commencement of their first day at St Peter s Catholic College. This is the time in the term when assessment tasks are due and students are busy completing assignments for the various subjects. Good luck with your submissions. There is much excitement regarding camps. Camp is this week for Year 7 at Southern Cross Outdoor Education Centre, Somersby from Wednesday 30 March to Friday 1 April. Year 8 will be travelling to Great Aussie Bush Camp, Tea Gardens from 5 to 8 April. Many students are submitting their cabin/group names to the Year Co-ordinators to secure sleeping arrangements/activity groups with their friends. Please keep these notes rolling in. The Study Skills Program will be held during last two weeks of the term. Formal lessons are suspended for the first four periods on each day to allow the program to be implemented. The specific days are as follows. Week: 10 Thursday 31 March Year 8 Green side Week: 11 Monday 4 April Year 8 Red side Tuesday 5 April Year 7 Green side Wednesday 6 April Year 7 Red side The next few weeks will see all Year 7 and Year 9 students preparing for NAPLAN Testing. All students in the nation will sit for the NAPLAN testing in the third week of next term (Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 May). The annual Year 8 Night of the Notables will be on Tuesday 10 May. Students are able to set-up from 6:00pm with the entry parade starting at 6:30pm. The night will finish at 7:45pm. Remember to invite grandparents, aunties and uncles. We commence next term in winter uniform and I wish all a safe and relaxing holiday. Paul Cannon Stage 4 Co-ordinator Mathematics Need help with Maths? 7 English Debating The Josie Mitchell Debating competition enables students in Years 7-9 to compete against other Catholic and independent schools on the Central Coast. It is held in Term 2 and generally takes place on alternate Thursday afternoons. Students interested in participating are asked to see Mrs Jones in the English staffroom. Natalie Jones Acting English Co-ordinator Science Year 9 Excursion to Lucas Heights Nuclear Reactor On 15 March, the top twenty St Peter s Year 8 science students of 2015 were lucky enough to gain access into the nuclear research plant at Lucas Heights, Sydney. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the lucky students who achieved this through hard work and dedication throughout their science classes in We had a long day ahead of us as we all had to be at school before 7:00am to get through the Sydney morning traffic. Three hours and one too many bags of lollies later, we got to the site and it was amazing. The plant covers around 70 hectares and had approximately 1300 people working on the site. The site is owned by the Australian Government and Federal Police patrol the grounds. Mrs Walters reminded us repeatedly not to mention the word Bomb. ANSTO is the only nuclear research reactor in Australia; providing climate change research, water resource management, materials engineering, neutron scattering and a range of medicines and scientific research. We participated in many fun and educational activities before having a tour around the site. On the tour we got to see the neutron scatterers, the nuclear reactor (through a surveillance camera and live feed because people under 18 aren t allowed into building ). We studied the different parts of the reactor and how it worked, using visual representatives of the nuclear reactor. Even though we didn t have time for a Macca s stop on the way home, we still had a great day. Overall it was an educational experience that many of us will hold in our memories for years to come. It also provided some of us with the idea of working on certain jobs on that site. It expanded our knowledge on the different services that nuclear research plants provide and gave us a deeper understanding on the chemical world. The five hour round trip was worth it in the end! A young person s decision to move into a particular job is very complex in the 21 st Century. The concept of career development is real as individuals move up, reverse and take right and left hand turns and even seem to go in circles through their career development. I would like to thank to the VET teaching team whose commitment to ongoing upgrades and additional work required of the VET teachers is outstanding and culminates in quality delivery of teaching and learning of VET courses at St Peter s Catholic College. Wishing you all a restful holiday. Pauline Dibb VET/Careers Co-ordinator

On Thursday mornings, while most of the St Peter s staff and students are arriving for the day, Q Block has been wide awake and buzzing with artistic energy! The ARTSCOOL project has been running during Term 1, with budding young artists coming together to learn new and exciting techniques, work with different materials and spend some extra time being creative! So far, students have looked at using different styles of music to inspire abstract designs and colour schemes, as well as experimenting working with different drawing materials and styles. As we continue into the season of Easter, the group of passionate artists have also begun collaborating on a large scale drawing a tiled mural of Michelangelo s La Pieta. Keep your eyes peeled for the display around the school. If you are interested in joining the Visual Arts group, come and grab an enrolment form from Q Block. Every term we will get fresh ideas, explore new themes and learn new styles for making exciting art. There will be opportunities to enter your work in competitors and participate in group activities such as excursions, guest artist tutors and ARTSCOOL camp. Your artwork will be displayed at school, on the College website and in local art exhibitions. Megan Williams Visual Art Teacher

Broken Bay Swimming Report On Wednesday 23 March 2016, I had the pleasure of taking 32 of St Peter s finest swimmers to the Broken Bay Swimming Carnival held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre at Homebush. The day started with a very early start leaving the college at 6:00am. We arrived in plenty of time which ensured the students were properly warmed up and ready to race at 9:30am. Throughout the day we had some exceptional results including many 1 st places to Dylan Villa, Maurice Good and Brandon Reeves. Each of these three boys were successful in progressing to the next level of CCC. Maurice (U14) and Brandon (U16) were also successful in achieving Age Champions for Broken Bay with Dylan Villa (U13) and Cameron Dodd (U15) coming second in their age group overall. A wonderful and outstanding effort. We are extremely proud of all of our swimmers who not only swam strongly but also displayed exceptional sportsmanship. I would like to thank Miss Lisa Franks and Miss Michelle Blood for assisting on the day and making sure the students were well looked after. 13 Enrolment Information Year 7 Enrolments for 2017 closing on 2 May Please be prepared and submit your Enrolment Application as soon as possible for your child s Year 7 place at St Peter s in The closing date for applications for Year 7 students, 2017 is immediately after school holidays on 2 May. Karen Peters Business Manager Student Leadership The Peer Mentoring has been a very successful program this year, with the Year 12 leaders helping the Year 7 students to settle into high school. They have started to build some good relationships with the Year 7 students, and hope for these relationships to develop further throughout the year. On behalf of the Leadership Team, we wish the Year 7 s a successful and enjoyable camp during week 10. The Year 12 s will be in the middle of their exams so are therefore unable to visit the students whilst they are on camp. The Year 7 Meet and Greet afternoon was an enjoyable time with a large number of families attending. It was a great opportunity for the families to meet the Homeroom teachers, Year Co-ordinator and the student leaders. The College Open Day was another successful event which incorporated the student leaders as tour guides. They spent the afternoon/evening showing around existing families with siblings getting ready for High School as well as prospective families, around the College in the hope of them enrolling for We look forward to seeing them next year. Although the Marriott Shield was cancelled on the day due to imminent bad weather predicted at the time of the event, the student leaders had put in quite a bit of work up until that point. We ended up having a hot chip fundraiser last Wednesday at lunchtime so we were still able to raise money for the Cancer Council Fundraiser. We ended up raising a massive $1200, which was a fantastic effort for 1 day. The students worked incredibly hard. Some Year 12 students competed in the Lions Youth of the Year. We had Lachlan Kowalski, Brooke Hoolihan and Margaret Renfrew enter. They all made it through the first round and both myself and Mr Michael Tobin had the pleasure of attending the next round. Although all three students spoke exceptionally in both the impromptu and the pre-prepared speeches, it was based on a quite detailed process of applications, interviews and speeches. I was blown away by the high level of speakers, most of which were captains of their own schools. If it was on the speeches alone, our competitors would have won, hands down. I was very proud to witness such an event. Another event to which I was very proud to be a part of was the Central Coast Youth Planning Forum. We were the only non-government school represented on the day at Ourimbah University. It was a day put on by NSW Department of Planning which allowed for approximately 30 of the youth of the Central Coast to come together to help plan out the next 20 years of the Central Coast, including infrastructure, environment and the arts. What an inspiring day! I was very impressed by the involvement and engagement by all student attendees who took the day very seriously and contributed in a very mature fashion. I am looking forward to some positive results coming out of the day. Well done to Thomas Morgan, Maddie Allen, Margaret Renfrew and Tamara Evans. Wow, what a term. I wish the student leaders luck in their examinations and a restful holiday coming up, with only 2 terms left they have a lot of preparation and study to do before the Higher School Certificate.
