It s easy to think that we re on the slow wind down toward Christmas, but in reality we re all very much on the wind up towards end of year exams for year 8-12 and the Head Start program from 4 th December. There is much learning yet to happen in! I d like to thank our school community for supporting our staff to spend last Friday together on one of our professional development days for the year. Together we learnt a lot about ourselves and our school as we delved deep into what are the strengths and weaknesses of our school and what actions need to be taken in 2018 to continually improve. We used data from our students and parents to help inform our decision making and focused on causal rather than symptomatic themes that will bring about sustained benefit for Warrnambool College. Ultimately two areas were identified that will now form the basis of our Annual Implementation Plan for next year. These areas are mutual respect (for staff, students and parents) and consistency. Over the course of the next month we will develop specific goals for each area, to ensure that realistic and meaningful targets can be set for 2018 and approved by school council. Sometimes agreeing to priorities for our school can be challenging given that there are so many things we could be addressing simultaneously. However it is great to have this agreement as it means we jointly own the actions and process from here to realise our vision where All Warrnambool Students Thrive. I know it s a little while ago now, but I d also like to thank the year 12 cohort for the manner in which they conducted themselves during their last week at school. They enjoyed themselves immensely, supported one another through the grief of attending classes for the last time (!) and ultimately have left a positive model for the year levels to come. I m also delighted to hear how full the revision classes have been over the past week it is testament to the growth mindset and focus on effort that our year 12 students have fostered throughout their time at Warrnambool College. I am confident it will hold them in good stead for the VCE exams over the next three weeks. I am sure it will carry through into the apprenticeships, traineeships and work placements that many of our VCAL students have already commenced. As we head into exams and the conclusion of classes for the remaining year levels at our school, please support your child to achieve the best that they can. 2 Adam Matheson Staff PD Day Last Friday staff had the opportunity to attend a professional learning day; this incorporated both teaching and non-teaching staff. It was a positive day and allowed for great reflection and planning in terms of the future direction of the College into 2018 and beyond. One area of focus to arise from staff conversations was the area of student voice. This is something that we believe can be further improved upon and will become a key feature for the College moving forward. Emma Miller State wide orientation On the 11 th of Dec the College will be hosting our small schools/ country orientation day. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to integrate into the life of the College and to acclimatise and familiarise themselves with the logistics of our large campus. On the following day, the 12 th of Dec we will be holding State wide orientation. All 2018 year 7 students will report to the College auditorium in the morning to begin the day. Dan Lee Scholarship Winners This year we received many applications for year 7 scholarships. This Friday the 10 th of November we will be holding a recognition ceremony at the College to award scholarships to the grade 6 recipients and to welcome their families into the College as well. Thank you to all of the families and teachers that took the time to complete nominations for these scholarships. We were truly impressed by the dearth of applications and achievements of the students. Dates for the end of the year classes for years 8-11 will cease on Friday the 24 th of November. The following week we will be holding exams for year 8-10 and exam feedback will be provided in classes for year 11 students. The Headstart program will commence on the 4 th of Dec for all 2018 year 8-12 students. This program, where possible, will be staffed by 2018 teachers and use the time to commence course work and assessments. It is imperative that all students attend this program to ensure they make a positive start to their 2018 course work. The Junior School final assembly will be held at 1.30pm on the 15 th of Dec. The Senior School final assembly will be held on Monday 18 th of Dec at 7pm. The end of year program will then run from the 18 th of Dec until Thursday the 21 st of Dec. In 2018 students will resume on Wed 1 st of Feb for tutorial interviews and classes will resume on the 2 nd of Feb. Page 2

3 Good Luck Year 12 s LOGANS REPORT Last week we farewelled our year 12 students, who on Wednesday undertook their first exam. For many, the last 6 years feel like they have flown and the friendships they have built and the experiences they have had, make this a time for reflection. We would like to wish all of our year 12 students all the best as they move forward towards greatness and the end of their school year. Student leaders This year it has been my privilege to work with the student leaders of Logans, as we head into our 2018 Student Leaders camp, I reflect on 12months earlier and the group of students whom I met when we went to Port Fairy. Being new to Logans, I had not had the opportunity to meet many of our leaders, however I was welcomed into the group with enthusiasm and energy that told me we were going to have a great year. All the leaders have worked hard this year to ensure our students were engaged in our house and to raise money and awareness for the Starlight Foundation. I would like to thank the students who were part of the leadership team this year and at our next house assembly we will present our 25 strong leadership team for End of year event On Friday 1st December we will have our house celebration for. This will take place at the Cramer St Bowls club. All Logans students including year 12 s are invited to attend for the lunch which will be followed by presentations and barefoot bowling. Students have 3 options for lunch, chicken parmigiana, beef cheeseburger and vegetable lasagne. (Gluten free and dairy free options available). Students have until the 22nd of November to pay and consent on Compass ($17). All lunches need to be ordered by Friday 24th of November to allow the restaurant to order food. 4 Student Achievements LOGANS REPORT Congratulations to Logans year 9 student Jasper Harris for being awarded the Australian Scout Medallion, which is considered the pinnacle of Scouting at this level. In a letter to Mr Clift from Scouts Victoria, their Chief Commissioner wrote "Only a small percentage reach this level, these are the top achievers among Scouting's 47 million members globally..." Jasper has demonstrated sustained effort over many months and years, selfdiscipline, teamwork and leadership. Well done Jasper on this amazing achievement! Congratulations to Logans Sports Captain Sam Worden for being selected to volunteer at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Sam will be working at the Nerang mountain bike trials in April and possibly supporting with the triathlon too. Sam will be taking part in some online training and will attend a seminar in preparation for his role. Fantastic news Sam, Well done! Well done to Logans year 11 student Oliver King for the quality of his VCE Product Design project. The sustainable, farm-inspired coffee table was designed as a gift for his grandparents who celebrate their birthdays and 60th Wedding Anniversary in December this year. The table was made almost entirely from scrap materials sourced from the grandparents' farm including a fallen red gum tree, an old ladder and fence palings. Due to the high quality of his product and his folio, his work is being submitted for consideration at the VCE Season of Excellence Top Design Awards. Good luck Ollie! The community supporting Starlight It was brought to our attention this week that a local farming family within our school community have gone purple to raise awareness of the Starlight Foundation. The Dalton s of Nullawarre have wrapped their hay bales in purple wrap to support Starlight. Page 4

Together, our student leaders with the support of the wider college community have managed to raise a record amount of money for the Francis Foundation. We are extremely proud to be the only house that supports a local Warrnambool charity. We are making one last bid to add to our fundraising for the year which involves selling some merchandise that we have had personally signed by some close friends. These include a signed Brisbane footy jumper, a signed Hockeyroos top and a pair of Nathan Sobey s Adelaide 36 s shorts. Stay tuned for more information. * * * * * * * * * * Congratulations to Levi Mason and AJ Buttonshaw-Benning who were both successful applicants for the 2018 School for Student Leadership Team to the Snowy Campus. These students will spend term 1 at the campus in east Gippsland. We hope you enjoy the experience and look forward to hearing all about it. * * * * * * * * * * Our new student leadership team for 2018 has been announced. We have a mixture of old and new faces which makes it very exciting for Hopkins house next year. Congratulations to all those who received a leadership position. 6 MERRI REPORT What a busy time around school it s been around the Merri Office, with the year 12 s finishing formal classes, combined with the energy of Summer being on the way there s a clear buzz in the air. Congratulations to the Year 12 s who have officially finished their classes at Warrnambool College. It is a great achievement to complete your studies and prepare yourselves for what lies ahead. We know that you have made your family and teachers proud, and we wish you all the best for exams. Please give it all you ve got and earn the results you know you deserve. All of Merri hopes you enjoyed your final day of fun and got your fill of hash browns, bacon and egg muffins and party streamers. We look forward to saying farewell in a more formal capacity on graduation night on the 24th th November at the Lighthouse Theatre. Currently in our tutorials, students and staff are analysing our Student Attitude to School survey data. We have been spending a few sessions on this, linking areas that are contributing to a better teaching and learning environment with what we are currently doing. Likewise, aspects that could be improved upon are being put under the students eyes, with their suggestions being recorded and compiled for examination. The information that will come from this will help shape the School in the near future and beyond! Merri house leadership applications are now closed, and the process of thinning the nominations is proving to be a tricky one. There have been so many motivated, enthusiastic and talented students present their cases for leadership in the house office, and it is with a heavy heart that we cannot grant every applicant a position. 7 Hands on Learning students have been working very hard over the last few weeks setting up our new outdoor area. Students have worked incredibly well as a team and have undertaken tasks such as mortaring in pavers, using various tools, building garden beds, filling garden beds, digging and planting. The students have been very involved in planning and setting up the new area so that it can become a practical and welcoming space to be enjoyed. The aquaponics have also been firing along with students experimenting with different planting options of seeds and seedlings. Some of these options include planting seeds in: scoria; coconut husks in PVC pipe; and planter tubes in a floating water bed. The results so far have been truly amazing. As part of the South West Community Sub Fund grant we received earlier this year, we have been able to make another donation of succulents and vegetable seedlings. This week we had a visit from Steve, Kree and students Arhnya, Marshal, Lachlan and Kayden from West Warrnambool Primary School, who were the lucky recipients of our latest donation. The students were very excited to receive their new seedlings and looked forward to planting them in their school garden. Leon and Kym. Page 7

8 CLONTARF ACADEMY The Clontarf boys have participated in a number of activities recently that have enabled them to develop in our Learning Areas of Education, Leadership, Well Being, Employment and Sport. Some of the activities that the boys have been involved in recently include: The boys were privileged to have local artist Ella Webb take them on a guided tour around Warrnambool admiring and discussing the artwork on display. The boys were then given an opportunity to create their own piece of artwork in a local alley behind Liebig Street. Once again, under the guidance of Ella Webb the boys spent two days completing their mural. Very rewarding for all involved, it not only gave the boys a sense of ownership and a sense of place but also allowed them a chance to learn some creative skills as well as making the alley a lot more attractive. The boys continued their Primary school buddy program this Term and were fortunate to have valued advocate and member for Wannon Dan Tehan MP accompany them on one of their visits. The boys also presented the Clontarf story to Member for South-West Coast Roma Britnell, highlighting how the program has positively influenced their lives. At the beginning of Term 4, the Warrnambool Clontarf boys travelled to Melbourne to participate in the Victorian Clontarf Cricket Carnival. The boys played against Clontarf academies from across Victoria and NSW as well as some corporate partners who formed a number of teams. Although the boys were not successful in retaining the Shield, they gave it a good shot and had a great day catching up with fellow Vic academy members as well as having a chance to share the Clontarf story to the corporate supporters of our program. Looking forward to our Awards night later this month as well as celebrating the achievements of our graduating Year 12 students. Theatre Studies Recently the VCE students undertook a 3 -part practical examination which included the presentation of a prescribed monologue. On Wednesday evening October 25 th some of these students participated in a showcase evening, presenting their monologues for parents, friends and staff to enjoy. It was a great night and I congratulate these students for all their hard work on this Theatre Studies outcome. One of the Theatre Studies students, Breanna Billing, is to be further congratulated for being shortlisted for the prestigious John Bell Regional Student Scholarship. Breanna has the opportunity to win an all expenses paid week in Sydney working with Bell Shakespeare company. Stay tuned! Page 8

9 CLASS OF Congratulations to our Class of. A great last day was had on Friday with some mixed emotions. All the best to those doing exams over the next three weeks and we look forward to celebrating at Graduation What a week for our French students! BONJOUR Warrnambool College! Our French Year 12 students sat their oral exam Monday morning and all came out satisfied. A great effort after a lot of preparation and some stress. It s not finished though. Four more weeks (and a few other exams) before the French written part. All the best to them and to Y12 Indonesian students! How about a bonne crêpe? On the 24 th of October, Mark Le Crêpe Man came to Warrnambool College and made fabulous French crêpes, filled with a range of delicious flavours. Our year 8 French students had prepared lots of colourful posters, to inform other students and staff about the event. Mark offered a crêpe to the Year 8 students who had designed the best poster in their class. We thank Moriah Smith for volunteering to help Mark. She ended up preparing excellent crêpes herself and was commended by our chef du jour! Mark added students were fantastic! Miam miam! On Thursday, it was movie night: Thor Ragnarok! This French trip fundraiser included a delicious supper provided by our students and their families. Thank you to all our family members, friends, teachers and other school members who came to support this project. This event raised about $1000. This was a valuable stage of our preparation for our 2018 French Study Tour! Intermediate (9-10) Boys Super 8 s Cricket A squad of 9 very excited and talented students represented Warrnambool College in Cricket Victoria s T20 Blast School Cup on Thursday the 26 th of October. These included Luke Wilson, Patrick Drake, Campbell Love, Jay Rantall, Jack Johnstone, Damon Dews, Ryan Fleming, Buster King and Alex Prisco. The boys had 3 hard-fought games against Mortlake College, Emmanuel College A and Cobden B which they managed to come through undefeated surviving a nail biting game against Emmanuel A to progress to the final where they took on Cobden A. The boys showed tremendous Warrnambool College spirit and made a massive 187 runs from their 8 overs before bowling Cobden out for 101 in reply. All players played a role in the team s success which was highlighted by 7 of the 9 players having to retire on 25 runs throughout the day. The boys now progress to the next level in Melton on the 15 th of November along with the 9/10 girls team to represent Warrnambool College. Well done Bullants! Page 9

10 Junior Girls Hockey We enjoyed a warm sunny day in Dimboola for the GWR Hockey finals. The junior girls brought their Agame but were unfortunately soundly beaten by Ballarat High School in our first match. The second match against Horsham was a much tighter affair. Nil all at full time saw the girls take to the pitch for a very exciting golden goal play-off. We stacked the forward line and within a couple of minutes the girls had put away a shot on goal from the post. Well played by all. Special mentions to Mia Routson, Tara Crispe and Ava Sharman for some excellent play. State Athletics Our team of 14 students represented the College with pride. Standout performances were Naticia Varley who ran a PB, and 2 nd in the 800m, Darcy Johnstone who finished 3 rd in the hurdles and Ayden Suter who also finished 3 rd in shot put. Our junior boys relay team ran a gallant race to finish just outside the placings in 4 th, and Renee Saulitis had us on the edge of our seats, leading the 100m for the first part of the race, only to fall away towards the end. Well done to all students on their effort and performance on the day. Library news It's getting to that time of year again when the library will be conducting their annual stock take. We ask students to please check bookshelves, under beds, lockers and bags for any library books and return them to the library ASAP. Many thanks, The Library team Page 10

11 GWR HOCKEY It was a great effort from the Warrnambool College 7 and 8 Boys who came together to play some outstanding hockey over the course of the day to make it through to the state final. The first game was a 0-0 draw where the boys played some exceptional hockey controlling the game, peppering the goals but unfortunately could not convert although having several near misses. This meant that they would have to win the next game to get through to states. In the second game they were able to score a quick goal in the first half and take the pressure off the players. They managed to win that game 2-0 and as a team started to use each other and play a better brand of hockey. Although being up early they stayed in the game and were able to maintain their focus as a group. Player Summary: Finn: Played a solid game in defence and was able to put his body on the line on a number of occasions to prevent shots on goal. It was fantastic to see him look for team mates when clearing the ball out of defence. Finley: Was another solid defender and really worked hard at maintaining his focus and staying in the game. He really stepped up when he was required and was a calm head in the backline. Heath: His continual pressure saved numerous shots on goal and his stick work was sensational in the backline which enabled us to get in clear possession and put the team in attacking positions. Shaw: Worked hard all day and looked a class above with amazing athleticism and skill. He was a real leader on the day and someone that the team looked up and looked for in key moments of both games. Jace: He was excellent with the stick and was able to settle in key moments to find targets. His continual effort was not unnoticed and his passion to get the side over the line in both games was fantastic. Hayden: Played a different role for him in goalie and stood up in key moments on the day. He was vital to the team success and it was fantastic to see him sacrifice his usual game for the team success. Josh: His saving efforts on the day were outstanding for a person who has not played a lot of hockey. He was able to mop up well and provide real drive from the backline. Jaxon: Worked hard all day and stood up against bigger bodies. For a year 7 boy up against year 8 bodies he really showed great potential and clean skills. Bailin: was a great example of how far someone can grow with their hockey when they put in the work. His skill and effort has improved immensely from this year compare to last year. He was a key member in the side. Tom: Was very classy and damaging with the stick in hand. He was able to bring others into the game with pin point passing and his skills looked a class above. Jack: Showed great improvement in confidence and skill level with the hockey stick from this year to last. He absolutely gave it his all and was a great leader with his wise comments on the day. Sam: Excellent with the hockey ball in hand and a real asset to the team. He was able to find targets in congestion and showed great skill when handling the ball. Duncan: Was excellent with stick in hand he showed maturity beyond his years. He was able to lift in key moments of both games. Tanner: Was very good at finding himself in opportunities for goals. His efforts when the games were on the line were very good and was dangerous in attack. Page 11
