GCSE Results GCSE Results will be released on Thursday 24 th August. The Exam Boards no longer provide Provisional Statements of Results, but provisional results are available in school on Thursday 24th August from 9.30am-11.00am when school provisional results slips will be available for collection. Please note that Year 10 students can also collect their R.E. GCSE results on this day. Students should collect their own results in person. However, if a student is unable to collect their own results, the following is required: A written request, signed by the student, with full details of a nominated person authorised to collect the results on their behalf. A pro forma for this can be found on the school website under the exams tab. and Photographic proof of identity of the nominated person (not the student), in the form of a driver s licence or passport. The results belong to the student and to protect student confidentiality, we will be unable to release results without such consent and evidence. Alternatively, if you are on holiday or cannot come into school for your results, you can leave an A4 or A5 stamped addressed envelope (with sufficient postage) with the Exams Office. This can be done at any time during the remainder of the summer term. Your slip will be posted to you on the afternoon of Results Day. Please be aware that you will require evidence of ALL of your results obtained at Charlton to enable you to enrol onto your courses at your desired Post-16 centre/college (a copy of any year 10 results will also be included in your envelope) and that these provisional Statement of Results are NOT certificates, and as such may not be sufficient as proof of qualifications for potential employers. Invites will be sent out in the autumn term (please advise us if your address/contact details change after you have left the school).

Fundraising for Clifton Community Arts Centre In the last few months the School has supported the Clifton Community Arts Centre, a local group looking to set up a multipurpose community centre incorporating an 80 seat cinema at the vacant HSBC building in Market Square, Wellington. In March, Adam Caswell, Adam Rangzabh, Ethan Shakespeare, Kyle Braddock and Josh Bagnall formed a team at a business challenge event hosted by Wrekin College and were set a challenge by the group of increasing awareness of the group in the town and coming up with funding suggestions. They came up with some great ideas that are being taken on board. During April, the group participated in a fundraising campaign known as Local Hero run by the online website, Local Giving. Local ceramicist, Charlotte Clark of Queen Street, Wellington acted as a fundraiser and produced tiles designed by the students which will be permanently displayed in trading premises once secured. This activity generated significant funds for the group. Thirty pictures were selected from which to make tiles and they were displayed for the first time at Charlotte s stall at the Midsummer Fayre in Wellington on 10 th June. On 13 th May, the school was used by the group to hold a successful Celebration of Dance event featuring 160 dancers from various groups across the spectrum of dancing. This was the biggest event the Society has so far staged and was enthusiastically received by the audience. The Society is grateful for the help of Mr Pritchard, Mr Beech and in particular Mr Blain in helping to make the event the success it was. In turn, the School is very happy to support the aims of the group and look forward to further collaborations in the future. You can find out more at and can see the full range of wares provided by Charlotte Clark at clarkdesignermaker.co.uk INCREASING AWARENESS: Adam Caswell, Adam Rangzabh, Ethan Shakespeare, Kyle Braddock and Josh Bagnall FUNDRAISING: Local ceramicist Charlotte Clarke produced tiles designed by students Year 7 & 8 Students Visit Preston Montford On 23 June a group of 24 students from years 7 and 8 visited Preston Montford Field Studies Centre. The purpose of the trip was for students to gain practical experience in working with weather station equipment, using moths as indicators of climate change and practising orienteering skills. Here s what two of the students had to say about the visit:

Work Experience Year 10 students had a fantastic time on work experience recently. For one week during April, they experienced the world of work in a variety of work situations ranging from engineering, hairdressing, livery, mechanics, and college, to retail and accounting, to name but a few! Each work experience was sourced by the student themselves and, in the majority of cases, their placement was linked to their career aspirations. Year 10 tutors and members of the Senior Leadership Team visited the students at their placements; where they talked to both students and staff to discover how successful the experiences were, and to find out what aspects of the experience were the most rewarding. There was a lot of positivity surrounding the experiences across the year group, and some students signed up for additional placements at their establishments. The biggest factor for the students was discovering how different a day s work is compared to attending school: the pressures were different; the hours longer and, in some cases, having to be responsible for their own timekeeping and solving problems for themselves helped many students develop skills they didn t know existed. Overall, the week was a success with the year 10s excited about what they had experienced and filled with enthusiasm to achieve at school to ensure they are able to fulfil their career aspirations. Miss Tattersall, Senior Tutor Below, two students share their experience of their week at work: Faye Oliver For my work experience I went back to my primary school - St Peter s Bratton Primary School - because, for a while now, I have wanted to be a primary school teacher. I really enjoyed my work experience because it related to me and what I want to do. It wasn t about making cups of teas either - I got to help the children make hot cross buns; take a group of children out of the class and work with them independently; give them extra support in lessons; and work with many students and different teachers. Work experience helped me to develop my skills, and find out information about different careers. It was definitely an amazing experience! Tom Daniels When I was told to get a placement for work experience, I struggled to think of what that I wanted to do in the future, but I eventually found something that I wanted to do. At first I thought I would be making coffees and not much else, but when the week came around it was all different: I was up all day everyday learning and doing new things I didn t think I would do. I did not once make a single cup of tea or coffee in my entire week! It went really well - I think everyone should try and make the most out of work experience as it will help you in the future when you apply for a job.

Charlton s Carnegie Readers Here are the books that were on the CILIP Carnegie Medal Shortlist for 2017: Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Macmillan The Bone Sparrow, Zana Fraillon, Orion Children's Books A group of eight keen readers from Year 7 shared the list of 10 shortlisted books for the Carnegie shadowing scheme and met on a regular basis for 10 weeks to read and discuss their responses to the books. Accompanying them on their journey were Mr Adams and Mrs Tulk. Charlton s Carnegie readers were: Seth Bradbury, Aiden Bushell, Kai French, Lottie McGrath, Ethan O Mahony, Dylan Rathod, Gemma Smith and Barnaby Taylor. They recommend all the books, although the Carnegie winner was Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. CARNEGIE CRAZY: Year 7 students read the ten shortlisted books Students opinions: Seth felt that Wolf Hollow was the best book because the characters were enjoyable ; Dylan agreed with the Carnegie judges as he enjoyed Salt to the Sea owing to the complex life of multiple narrators and intertwined stories. Barney would recommend Sputnik s Guide to Life on Earth as it has humour, Aiden preferred The Stars at October bend and Ethan loved Rail Head as it transports you to a world of Sci-Fi and trains. The Stars at Oktober Bend, Glenda Millard, Old Barn Books The Smell of Other People's Houses, Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock, Faber and Faber Beck, Mal Peet with Meg Rosoff, Walker Books Carnegie Inspired Quiz Students from six local schools came together to test their knowledge on books in a quiz inspired by the CILIP shadowing scheme on 15 June. They shadow the judging process for the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Children's Book Awards by reading, discussing and reviewing the shortlisted books. Idsall School hosted the quiz with teams from Abraham Darby, Charlton, The Priory, Lacon Childe, and William Brookes taking part. The teams competed in seven rounds involving questions on books nominated for the awards and on general book knowledge. One of the judges for the awards also talked to the children. The quiz was won by the Idsall team and a trophy was awarded. However, our team did themselves proud and gained a creditable score. 7 Music Achieves Gold Award for Excellence Many congratulations to the Music Department on achieving a Gold Award for Music Excellence. Charlton is the first school in Telford and Wrekin to achieve this award, and the achievement of such a high standard shows the school has a rich music curriculum in place, ensuring pupils are making consistently good progress in this subject and that they have strong engagement with the Telford & Wrekin Music Service and the Music Hub. The Excellence in Music awards are available to all schools in Telford & Wrekin and are endorsed by the North West Midlands Music Education Hub. If you would like further information about the awards, please contact Tracey Stirling at Telford & Wrekin Music on EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC: The Music Department achieved a Gold Award for their rich curriculum offer ATTENTION YEAR 10 STUDENTS! Are you an innovator? Do you have an idea which could make life easier, simpler or better? We want you to use your imagination, to think creatively. This is your chance to ask What if? or even build a fun example of what it might look like. The TeenTech Awards are for UK students working in teams of up to three to look at problems large and small to see if they can find a better way of doing things. There will be a prize of 1000 to the winning school in each category and the overall winners will be presented with their awards by HRH Duke of York KG at Buckingham Palace. If you are interested, please see Miss Vyse for details.

STEM Festival In March, Charlton students were invited by RAF Cosford and RAF Museum Cosford to take part in their first event in partnership with Tablet Academy: The Aeronautical Engineering Learning Festival. During the event, the group of students experienced eight hands-on workshops, each designed to embed and test STEM knowledge and explore aeronautical engineering concepts. The workshops they took part in were Cyber Security delivered in partnership with Wave 9, Simple Planes, Rocket Cars, Rockets, Minecraft, BBC micro:bit, Robotics and creating a Security programme. Everyone had a great day and presented the school in a good light. The girls were especially happy with the freebies they took home! EXPLORING CONCEPTS: The students attended workshops which tested their STEM knowledge. Mission STEMpossible 11 As a part of STEM at Charlton School, eleven Year 8 students formed two teams to participate in the STEM challenge event Mission: STEMpossible II. Students uncovered clues to generate codes using STEM skills including cryptography and endoscopy, and used Knex and Hydraulics to build two devices to tackle problem solving activities. The prize winners were one of the Charlton student groups, The Eagles. PROBLEM SOLVING: Students used Knex and Hydraulics to build two devices.

Glider Challenge A small group of dedicated Year 7 students worked really hard last term to create an amazing fullybranded glider to enter into the RAF Cosford Glider Challenge. Kai French, Barny Taylor, Lillian Russell and Alexandra Simpkins decided on team colours and created a logo which was transferred onto the team uniform - the logo being a slug!! During after-school sessions the team used a laser cutter and a lot of sand paper to create the glider s aerodynamic shape (Lilly was fundamental in creating the aerofoil shape). The glider was so good that it won the flight competition by a long shot! Also - helped by Barny s expert throwing skills - it flew an incredible distance across hanger 1 at Cosford (they had to remove a plane to make space)! The team also presented the process to two RAF engineers and two RAF veterans, who were very impressed by the design of the PowerPoint (thanks Ally and Rob) and by the quality of scientific understanding as explained by Kai (who won an individual award for this). The team won the award for furthest flight and came overall runner up beating teams from schools throughout the West Midlands. WINNERS: Well done to the team for their fantastic achievement. Big Bang Fair A group of Year 9 students were invited to attend an incredible STEM event held at Harper Adams University recently. The Big Bang Fair is an awardwinning combination of exciting theatre shows, interactive workshops and exhibits, as well as careers information from STEM professionals. It was an incredible opportunity for the students to explore a wealth of information about STEM subjects and potential future careers.

Year 11 Celebration Day On Friday 12th May, Year 11 held their Celebration Day. It was a chance for the students to leave their uniforms at home, dress up and have fun before the exam season started in earnest. A hand over assembly was followed by entertainment in the main hall by musical band Crump. The students enjoyed an Americanthemed lunch, then in the afternoon, the main Celebration Assembly was held. Congratulations Class of 2017!

Boulogne-Sur-Mer Trip Twenty-four students embarked on an exciting journey to Boulogne-Sur-Mer for a four-day trip recently. Departing school by executive coach, the students were excited - particularly those who hadn t been away from home before! After a long coach journey and thrilling ferry crossing, we arrived in France to beautiful weather. Over the course of the visit, we experienced many excursions. The chocolate factory and Naussica were definitely the favourites! The students also tasted snails; toured around the Chateau Musee; experienced a French farmers market; shopped; frolicked on the beach and enjoyed a disco night. Many of the students tried eating French cuisine and were proficient in using their manners when purchasing items. A fantastic time was had by all, we look forward to next year! EXCURSIONS: Highlights of the trip included Naussica and frolicking on the beach.

Charlton School Supports Street Children in Peru In 2004, the Head Girl at Charlton, Gemma Heighway, asked if we could support Bruce Peru, a charity that supported some of the poorest children in Latin America. After consideration it was decided to sponsor a shanty school, at which deprived children were given the chance to start a proper education. In particular, it was agreed to develop close links with a young family and follow their progress. Aberlado, Jocelyn and Neyder were selected by Bruce Peru for us to link with. At home they would eat a thin soup containing whatever they had been able to get that day - usually a potato, and usually Abelardo went out early (before school) to more prosperous neighbourhoods to collect food from plastic bags just before the bins were collected. Whatever Aberlado could scavenge went into the daily soup. He would also collect the day s fuel for cooking, this entailed gathering sticks and passing by the local sawmill, where they usually saved a few board ends for him. During that first year we collected about 800 for Aberlado s family and other street children. During that first year, Charlton School collected about 800 to be used for Aberlado s family and other street children in Trujillo (a large coastal city in north western Peru). In that first year of support, lunch for Abelardo, Jocelyn and Neyder would include rice, beans or lentils, and meat three times a week (usually chicken or goat), and depending on the price, fish once a week. Along with this, they got a piece of fruit, often a banana or mandarin, and a drink of fresh fruit juice. We also raised enough to support the education for a wider group of students. It turned out that the mother (who was skeletally thin), Joselyn and her baby sister were all anaemic. Iron tablets and a nutritive medicine was prescribed for the three of them. Food was sent home with Abelardo to feed the family at night and a social worker for a government run breakfast project got Aberlardo, Joselyn and Neyder into the program. The baby sister was placed into an infant day care centre (a 45 minute bus ride from their home). Here she received three meals - breakfast, lunch and a snack before the mother collected her in the evening - the biggest expense was paying all the bus fares. Aberlardo, Joselyn and Neyder ate a lunch five days a week and ate at a soup BRUCE PERU CHARITY: Since 2004 we have been following the progress of Aberlado, Jocelyn and Neyder who were selected for us to link with by the Bruce Peru charity. kitchen on Saturdays at a cost of 30 pence a meal. The charity would have supported Aberlado and his family anyway without our contribution, however, with the support from Charlton Students over the past 13 years the care for street children in Trujillo has been far more effective. The charity is run by volunteers and the only paid employees are Peruvians who, like most Peruvians, are very poor and struggle to gain employment.

By 2007, Abelardo started attending night school and always seemed cheerful even though he was always the one responsible for his younger siblings: more than the parents. Joselyn loved school even though she struggled with education. With a big smile she promised to do better the following year. Nayder came out of her shell (before, she would not look at anyone other than her brothers and sister and constantly held Joselyn s hand). She also sold sweets most afternoons with her brother and sister. Their mother rented an egg cart so that she could support her family through her own efforts. However, she rented it from a loan shark, and he ended up making most of the money. Bruce Peru provided her with another cart which she could rent without interest. In 2013, Aberlado and Joselyn were settled in starter professions. In 2013, Abelardo and Joselyn were settled in starter professions and mum continued working away at her micro business of cooking and selling eggs in the city centre. Over the years we have had updates on various other children that Charlton money has supported. Some of them have very sad stories indeed. In particular, there was a young 13- year-old girl called Victoria who experienced all kinds of violence in her life. With Charlton s support she was cared for, and protected from further threats, in a safe house; she later attended a local school. After 13 years of financial support from the students at Charlton School, the Bruce Peru charity has become more effective in their work with street children in the bustling city of Trujillo. Currently, Aberlado is working away from Trujillo in a factory, his sisters are progressing through different levels of education and mum is still running her egg business. SUPPORTING THE FAMILY: (Main picture) Their mother sold eggs in an effort to contribute. (Inset) The children in (Right) The most recent graduates. During the coming Summer Bruce, the founder of the charity, is making a visit to Europe and Mr Beach has arranged to meet him in Spain on behalf of staff and students at Charlton School. He said: I anticipate that future Charlton projects will be: support for building and funding of local schools for the poorest of children in Trujillo, and continued updates on Aberlado, Jocelyn, Neyder and their mother. There will also be an opportunity to support a further project that will be considered by current Charlton Student Leaders. Below is an extract from a recent update by Bruce Peru: Hope all is going well with you and the students in your classes. You may remember that just before our Christmas party we hold a graduation ceremony for children who will not get the opportunity to graduate from a regular school. These are children we taught to read, write and do maths when they were already too old to be accepted into The National Educational system. This is us (pictured above), sending them out into the world with enough preparation (and self esteem) to cope with what they will face out there. Congratulations and thank you and your students for your part in making this happen for them. 24 Snapchat Map Warning Snapchat has added a new map feature that allows people to see your location and parents are being warned about it. The latest update is called Snap Map and it allows Snapchatters to see, in real time, the location of their friends and what other people are doing all over the world. Snapchat released the update saying: We ve built a whole new way to explore the world! See what s happening, find your friends, and get inspired to go on an adventure! But some people are concerned about privacy and worried about who can find out their exact location. So here s how to turn the feature on and also how to make sure no-one can find your location. To activate Snap Map you need to do the following: Update your app (it ll work on an iphone or an Android). Once updated, click onto camera mode and pinch the screen to view the Snap Map. You can then see the location of your friends along with the location of anyone in the world who has activated the feature. But if you don t want people to find you here s what you need to do: You need to put yourself in ghost mode - when this is enabled, people can t see your location even though you can see theirs. T&W Safeguarding Team Warn Against Harmful Dating App A school in Manchester has sent out a warning to parents following concerns a teenage dating app is being used by sinister predators. One school posted the alert on its Facebook page over concerns about MyLOL. On further investigation, the school found the app is being used for inappropriate activities against young people. The Facebook message states: We strongly advise that you talk to your child about this and our advice would be to delete the app and block the website. On its website, MyLOL bills itself as the #1 teen dating site in the US, Australia, UK and Canada and claims to have more than 300,000 members around the world. It invites users to meet thousands of teenagers like you and then goes on to describe how users can chat with members or privately with someone. Teenagers are encouraged to update a profile and share pictures. A spokesman for NSPCC said: Any app that allows strangers to send photos to children or vice versa is troubling particularly where the images being exchanged are of a sexual nature. This needs to be urgently addressed. To find links to online agencies specialising in E Safety please visit the Charlton School website, (school information/e safety) WARNING TO PARENTS: The MyLOL logo to look out for (above).
