1 GEELONG LUTHERAN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 4 Week 3 20 October 2016 A: 2-38 Burvilles Rd, Armstrong Creek 3217 P: F: E: office@glc.vic.edu.au W: FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Well done to our Year 12 students who finished their formal schooling on Wednesday. The morning started with a student and staff breakfast. It was followed by a school assembly and a day of celebra ons. Thank you to our Year 12 students for their contribu ons these past years and their gi of a tree, which is to be planted in the alumni park. It is only a short me now un l the commencement of their VCE examina ons. We wish our Year 12 students well and pray they have every opportunity to best display their learning. Our students in Years 9-11 met immediately a er the departure of the Year 12s to start the process of elec ng our College Captains for the next 12 months. We value people-focused leadership with an emphasis on principles and power with people, rather than popularity and power over people. Vo ng for these Captains will be finalized today. In terms of our staffing for next year, Laura Ballinger (Years 1-2) will be talking one year s leave of absence to work overseas in the areas of mission and development. We pray for her safety and will look forward to hearing of her work. Our Year 9 students returned from their four day Rite Journey camp at Cape Bridgewater with many experiences to retell. I was very pleased to hear of the way our students met the challenges including the shocking weather condi ons on the night of the boys solo. The aim of this program in developing students resilience and adult behaviours was amply demonstrated. The highlight for this week was our Arts Soiree. Thank you to Michelle Vendy and our Arts teachers for organising this event. I was pleased to see the extensive display of Prep to Year 12 artworks, photographic work from the media classes, drama and musical items. Thank you to our many parents who supported their child s learning in the Arts through their a endance. I encourage the involvement of our parents in the Prep to Year 10 Family Mathema cs Evening, which is planned for Tuesday, 1 November. 2 Devo onal Thought - Luke 18:1-8 The Persistent Widow When we purchased a piano last year, I was really excited about learning to play. I borrowed a book from the library called: Learn Piano in 24 hours. So I sat down and started playing. I wish I could say that the next day I was playing like a maestro. But I wasn t. I gave up a er two hours. It was all too hard. There are many shortcuts and easy ways out of things these days. Instead of ea ng less and exercising to get fit, we buy into a fancy diet. Instead of speaking to someone, we text or message them. When it comes to wrestling with big ques ons, or ge ng jus ce, or pu ng things right with others, how persistent are you? Jesus told the parable of the persistent widow to show people they should always pray and never give up. In the parable, a widow nags a lazy judge to give her jus ce. In the end, the judge fears he will be worn out by her nagging and grants the woman her request. Jesus quickly declares that God is a good judge and will give jus ce to his people by answering their prayers. He then poses the ques on: Will he find faith on the earth? God wants us to pray con nually to him. Through prayer, we see God at work. Some mes God changes the person who prays through prayer and some mes the situa on. God doesn t want us to give up on him with a feeble, single request for the big situa ons we face. He desires an open line. Jonny Hedt, Pastoral Care Prayer Group GLC Prayer Group is a group of parents who gather regularly to bring the College and College community before God in prayer. All parents are welcome. In Term 4 the group will meet in the Pastoral Care Office opposite the Student Services counter from 2.20pm un l the end of school at 3.05pm on the following Mondays: October 31, November 14 and December 5. 7 Middle School Ma ers From The Music Desk It was terrific to see our GLC musicians performing at the Arts Soiree, stay tuned for pictures! We are very proud of your efforts. Recently, 7C have begun their Rapping journey, and here is the picture to prove it (see right). Anna Helmer Rite Journey Camp The Year 9s headed off to Cape Bridgewater Coastal Camp last week for their Rite Journey Challenge Camp. Ac vi es included caving, sandboarding and a 21km mountain bike ride. Students were challenged to go electronics-free for the camp as well as taking part in a Whinge-Free Week Challenge. This was tested when students (and staff) went out of their comfort zones and into the bush for 12 hours alone with two tarps, four tent pegs and five pieces of string for the Solo Challenge. The boys endured gale-force winds and squally showers on the first night while the girls managed well with a windless starry evening a couple days later. 8 From the Senior School YEAR 12 FINAL DAY We said farewell to our Year 12 students on Wednesday 19 October. A er arriving at 7.30am in their weird and wonderful costumes, they enjoyed a breakfast a ended by both students and staff. Staff had the opportunity to share some memories of the Year 12 group in the form of some unique awards that represented, both seriously and humorously, some character traits that students had become known for during their me at GLC. The students had also prepared some Most likely to that represented their reflec ons of each other. Thank you to Fiona Copley and our Year 11 students for preparing and serving the lovely breakfast on this morning and to Daniel Emmerson for his humour in MCing the event. The final assembly began at 9.00am and was a ended by Years 7-12 students. This provided an opportunity to reflect on the journey of the Year 12s, many of whom a ended GLC on its very first day as Year 7 students back in Two Year 11 students, Brooke and Sarah, shared some of their memories of our Year 12 cohort. Our two Senior School College Captains, Montanna and Rhys then took the podium to reflect on their class and their me at GLC. The students presented a gi to the College, a tree that will form part of the Alumni area that will be established upon the comple on of further buildings. The students names will also be individually engraved on bricks with their name and gradua ng year that will surround the tree; this layering of names and years will also grow with the College. Our Head of School, Barry Krueger addressed our gradua ng students. One of the highlights of the Year 12 assembly is always the Guard of Honour. This involves Prep- Year 11 students lining the pathway to the buses for our Year 12 students. They then exit the Chapel to a song of their choosing and say their goodbyes as they drive away for their last day ac vity. For their final day ac vity, our Year 12s chose to head to Laser Strike skirmish. A er enjoying the fun of the skirmish, students and accompanying staff went into Geelong City for their last lunch together before returning to the College. This was their last goodbye to formal Secondary School classes forever! We feel honoured and privileged to have journeyed with this group of young men and women and look forward to sharing their Gradua on and Valedictory Dinner at Peppers The Sands Resort on Thursday 17 November where we will further reflect on their journey. Despite students having their last day, it is certainly not the end! Many of the students will return throughout the coming weeks to con nue to prepare for exams, with tutoring assistance from their teachers. Their first exam is English on Wednesday 26 October. They will con nue with these casual visits un l the last exam for GLC subjects on Wednesday 16 November. We wish them well as they begin their study regime and exam prepara on. Congratula ons to all involved. It was very exci ng to find out we were awarded third prize. Recently the Victorian/Tasmanian District Conven on of Synod elected Pastor Lester Priebbenow (North Geelong Parish) as Bishop elect. Pastor Lester will be installed early in 2017 a er Bishop Greg completes his term at the end of this year. Pastor Lester has been regularly involved in our School Chapels and Closing Services and has provided extra assistance and support while we have had a Pastor vacancy at St John s Church and School. This is exci ng news. As this role is based in Melbourne, Pastor Lester s wife Deidre, a current teacher at St John s, has decided to ini ally take 12 months leave. We wish the Priebbenow family all the best as they prepare for their next calling. Meanwhile Mrs Naomi Gibbons has informed us that she will be con nuing her theological training and professional development in student wellbeing and has been successful in gaining a School Chaplaincy posi on and will conclude her service here at the end of this school year. Naomi has served us in numerous posi ons for many years and both staff members will be sorely missed by our School Community. We will need to reassess our staffing op ons for 2017 and will be adver sing this weekend in the Geelong Adver ser. It was wonderful to see so many parents of students in Kinder to Year 2 take up the opportunity to a end the Building Resilience in the Early Years presenta on by BATForce on Tuesday night. Today the first of our Years 3 & 4 classes visited Geelong Lutheran College to explore their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden and sampled a meal prepared by their Year 3 & 4 students. St John s is planning a Kitchen Garden next year to incorporate healthy food, gardening and sustainability into our curriculum through prac cal experiences and hands on involvement. Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ. Ephesians 4:32 Comment -: The alterna ve is to be irritable and bi er - and who can live with that sort of person? No one! God s abundant blessings to you all. Brian Schultz, Head of School
