2 At Durham School we pride ourselves on the wide range of activities we offer and know these are the vital ingredients, alongside academic success, in contributing to the development of confident, healthy and all round individuals. We encourage all our pupils to participate in a range of activities which suits him or her and ensure they have the opportunity to reach their full potential. The Activities Programme: Musical Activities: These usually take place in Music School or the Chapel but notices are regularly posted on the music noticeboard situated inside Music School for any changes or additions to the normal programme. Many activities such as Junior and Full Choir are open to all and others are by invitation once a certain level of proficiency has been reached. The Weekly Music Programme: Full Chapel Choir Junior Choir Orchestra Junior Orchestra Tenors and Basses Sopranos and Altos St Cecilia's Chamber Choir Big Band Quintet Grade 5 Music Theory Brass Group Theatrical and Drama Activities: These normally take place in the Luce Theatre and are for pupils interested in performing arts. Each year, pupils will perform in a whole school production and there will also be a range of other smaller performances for different age groups. Sporting Activities: The main sporting programme is delivered through the timetabled Games Sessions with every pupil timetabled for 3 double lessons per week of sport. Pupils can participate in a range of sport and physical activity and everyone is encouraged to compete in a school team. Some sports offer extra technical or strength and conditioning sessions, before school, during lunch time or after school. Academic Activities: Most departments deliver weekly workshops to allow pupils to explore their subject further and also offer study support in that subject. Academic Societies These are totally pupil led and offer pupils and staff the opportunity to further their knowledge through a range of lectures offered by experts in their chosen field and also presentations and activities delivered by staff and pupils. These Societies are open to all, however due to the level of the content, will usually appeal to Y11 and Sixth form. Our Societies include: Heretics Society: Debating Medical Society (MEDSOC) Tristram Society: Science focused lecture programme Pupils are expected to demonstrate a commitment to any activity they have elected to participate in. It is inevitable that pupils may experience a clash of activities on occasions and it is vital they communicate well with the members of staff as there is always a solution to the problem. Activities which always take precedence at lunchtime and evening are music ensembles, Duke of Edinburgh and CCF section activities.
