2 Kym s Comment A VIEW TO THE FUTURE Dear families & friends Working Bee Thank you to the following families who were able to assist our new Buildings and Grounds leader, Brett Taylor: Anderson, Koll, Bennet, Shields, Hubbard, Murray and Jones. This terrific team spread soft fall under the junior playground, weeded the vegetable garden, spread gravel at the rear of the school and planted small shrubs along the back of the Senior Learning Centre. Many hands do make light work. The school looks terrific! We are very proud of our fantastic school grounds. Our children have a wonderful playground and outdoor learning environment. The vegetable garden is growing well at the moment and a number of children have tasted our tomatoes. There will be quite a good lot of produce for cooking and selling at the next Produce market on Tuesday 13 May. F/1T will be organizing the next market. If you are able to assist on the day please contact Hayley. Streets Ahead Kate Beveridge, from Cardinia Council, was once again at Gembrook Primary School visiting each of the classrooms to educate the students about safe use of bikes, skateboards and scooters. Road Safety is an important life skill. The school appreciates Cardinia Shire s support for this program. Kate will be back for another Streets Ahead program in term 4. Please encourage your child to use their wheels safely around the local roads. We encourage all students to use their wheels to get to school. NAPLAN - Year 3 and 5 National NAPLAN testing will be held on Tuesday May 13th, Wednesday May 14th and Thursday May 15th. If you have any questions in respect to this and your child's involvement please see your child's teacher. A brochure has been sent home with some answers to frequently asked questions. EDEC Cross Country The EDEC cross country for students in grades 3-6 will be at the Mountain Rd Reserve this Thursday. Please send along extra clothes if the weather is wet. The event will go ahead! PFA Mother s Day Thank you to our wonderful PFA team. They have organised gifts for students to purchase this Wednesday Friday. If you are able to assist at the stall please contact the office. Basketball Clinic There will be a lunchtime basketball clinic on the basketball court next week. Thank you to Sherbrooke Basketball Association for facilitating these sessions. Assembly Parents are always welcome at the weekly assemblies held each Friday morning at 9:00am. This week Mr Budin s boys drumming group will be performing. Open Morning Saturday May 9:00-11:00 If you have a child starting school next year I would like to invite your family along to the Open Morning. Senior students will show visiting families around our school. Please invite friends to the morning if you know they are considering Gembrook Primary School for their child s education. 5 Our school has been sponsoring Felistas Shoku through World Vision since She is now 17 years old. Felistas lives in a small village near Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe in Africa. The SRC organises fundraisers to help support Felistas and her family. We have helped her village build a deep water well, Felistas family were supplied with a milking goat and she has school supplies and clothing thanks to our generous donations. This term we will be raising money for Felistas by encouraging students to donate a gold coin and dress up as a rock star, on the last day of term. We will also be running a Talent Show during the last week of term 2. Start preparing your performances now. We re sure everyone enjoyed the Wheels Day last week. It is great to see everyone being active! Last term the Mobile March program was very successful. Well done to everyone who tried their best to come to school actively, as often as they could. Remember to keep this up. The winner of the scooter and helmet was Nick (1/2D). Congratulations Nick! Congratulations to Airliah and Harry on being selected as the SRC representatives for Foundation H.

8 What s been happening in Science this week? Foundation students are learning about the weather this term. This week they talked about all the different types of weather, and how the sky changes when the weather changes. They went outside to look at the sky and observed the colour of the clouds. Grades 1 and 2 are learning about how things change over time. They constructed Venn diagrams to sort photographs of objects into Natural and Made groups. Some of the objects were both natural and made so they were put in the overlapping part of the Venn diagram. Grade 1/2B and 1/2D have a Science Investigation taking place in the playground. Please be respectful of these children s learning by not disturbing the part of the garden with the flags and signage. Thank you! Two examples of our Foundation students viewing frames.
