1 16 th November 2012 Dear Parents, Open Day and Vintage Tea Thank you to all the girls who were able to come into school last Saturday to help with Open Day. All of the prospective families were very impressed; especially with our Year 5 tour guides. Well done girls! Operation Christmas Child One hundred filled shoeboxes have been donated which is a fantastic total. Thank you for all of your contributions to this appeal and well done to the Junior School Council girls for co-ordinating this initiative. Children in Need Thank you for supporting Children in Need today. An amazing array of teddy bears joined the girls in the Junior School and I am confident that we will have raised a large amount of money for this worthwhile charity. Hockey Fixture with Inglefield House On Wednesday, two teams from Year 5 and two teams from Year 6 travelled to Monmouth to take part in a hockey fixture with Inglefield House. This proved to be a very enjoyable fixture with all matches played in a great spirit. The games finished as follows: Year 5A drew with Inglefield House 0-0, Year 5B defeated Inglefield House 1-0. Year 6A defeated Inglefield House 1-0, Year 6B defeated Inglefield House 7-0. Well done to all who played and many thanks to Inglefield House for their post-match hospitality. We look forward to welcoming them to Howell's next week for lacrosse matches!

2 I.C.E. Bridge Building Project Women in Science Day on Tuesday was marked in style this year. The girls from Years 3 and 5 were treated to a special opportunity to build the I.C.E. Bridge, a large scale suspension bridge in the Sports Hall. This involved wearing hard hats, safety goggles, high visibility jackets and protective gloves in order to manoeuvre the treads and traction equipment into a fully operational and load bearing suspension bridge spanning half of the Sports Hall. The girls were required to co-operate in teams, follow strategic instructions and use their initiative; the result of their hard work was truly astounding. We were delighted when Mrs Ashill took the risk/opportunity(!) to walk over the bridge to try out its strength. We would like to thank Costain Construction who generously hosted the event and provided the manpower and equipment for the day. Mrs Randall Year 6 Science Project This week Year 6 visited the Senior School to take part in a record breaking attempt to be part of the LARGEST SCIENCE EXPERIMENT IN THE WORLD! To celebrate the 140 th year of the GDST, at exactly 11 o'clock on Tuesday morning, groups of girls from 23 GDST schools all took part in the same science experiment. Representatives of the Guinness Book of World records were the on hand to ensure that everything was done 'according to the book' and we hope to be part of the team that holds the new world record for the greatest number of people taking part in the same experiment at the same time! Many thanks to Mrs Churchman and the Senior School Science Department for organising this event and inviting the Junior School girls to take part.

3 Video Conference This week Year 2 went to the Senior School to take part in a video conference with The Museum of London. They learned all about The Great Fire of London, saw some genuine artefacts, and joined in with activities and songs. They learned a lot whilst having great fun! Cardiff Schools X-Country Championships On Tuesday, 32 girls from Years 5 and 6 took part in the first round of the Cardiff Primary Schools X-Country Championships. All our girls enthusiastically met the challenge of this metre course in dry, yet very muddy, conditions! We had 14 runners in the Year 5 event and of those, 8 finished in the top 20 with Alicia L winning the race with an outstanding run. 18 girls from Year 6 took part in a somewhat longer race and, once again 8 of our girls finished in the top 20. The top four finishers in each age group now qualify for the final of these championships, to be held in early December. Competing for Year 5 will be Alicia L (1st), Imogen T (3rd), Sophie S (8th) and Ella K (9th). Competing for Year 6 will be Jess R (6th), Charlotte H (8th), Natasha S (10th) and Sascha B (11th). Well done to all the girls who took part in this very successful competition! Individual Photographs A reminder that the deadline for receipt of payment and order slips for individual school photographs was Wednesday of this week. Year 5 Hockey Club Year 5 Hockey Club is cancelled next Thursday 22 nd November owing to Year 6 hockey matches with Llandaff Cathedral School. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. Nursery Next week, the girls in Nursery will be focusing on the letters c and k.

4 Howell s / John Lewis Beauty Event Howell s School and John Lewis have teamed up for an evening of festive treats on Tuesday 4 th December from 6pm 8pm. Tickets are now on sale at a cost of 5 to include a drink on arrival, a John Lewis goodie bag and the 5 ticket is redeemable on the night against any beauty purchase. Do come and support this exclusive Howell s event! Ticket order forms are available from Mrs Thomas in the Junior School Office. Last Day of Term A reminder that you are cordially invited to the Junior School Hall from 12.15pm on the last day of term for tea and mince pies (kindly organised by the Parents Association). The Infant (Year 1 & 2) and Junior (Year 3 & 4) choirs will be providing seasonal background music until 12.45pm. The girls will then return to their classrooms until the end of the school day at 1pm. Beauty and the Beast DVDs DVDs of our recent performance of Beauty and the Beast are currently on sale priced at 15 which includes a programme. Order forms are available from Mrs Thomas in the Junior School Office. We have only produced a limited number of the unique DVDs and they will be sold on a first come first served basis. Many thanks. Our very own secure Howell s ebay and parent advertising portal! It is free and easy to use and will be password controlled to invited users only. You will be able to buy and sell good quality second hand clothing, equipment, toys, bikes etc. amongst our community with the option to give a percentage of your profit back to the school's nominated fund (if you wish) - they even have their own App! You will also be able to advertise your business to other parents for a small fee, which will also be donated to the fund. If you have a holiday property to rent, you can also place this on the site. Piano Concert Well done to the pupils of Miss Bird who performed in a concert on Tuesday afternoon in the Great Hall. They all had a wonderful time as you can see from the photograph below!

5 Parents Association News Christmas Fayre Flower Pot Tombola Today your daughter has brought home a flower pot which we are inviting them to fill with something. It could be sweets/stationery/hair-clips/a teddy/crafty bits. The possibilities are endless, though we do suggest a value of no more than 4, and ask that you do not send in perishables or alcohol. In return for filling a pot, pupils are invited to wear their own clothes to school on Friday 23 rd November. The donated pots will be used on the tombola stall at the Christmas Fayre on Friday 30 th November, and all the funds raised by the stall will go directly to the school. If you and your child would like to donate a pot, please could you return the filled pot to school on Friday 23rd November; in return, your daughter may wear her own clothes to school that day. If you do not wish to fill a pot please return it to school. Raffle Tickets If you would like to purchase any raffle tickets, please send your cash or cheque (payable to HSL Parents' Association), together with any sold and unsold ticket counterfoils, to school in an envelope clearly marked PA Raffle Tickets. Please also ensure that a contact name and telephone number is written on each of the counterfoils. Santa s Grotto If your child would like to visit Santa at the Christmas Fayre, please complete the form that was sent home today and return to the Junior School office as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you there. Northbrook Wrapping Paper Many thanks to all who supported the Northbrook wrapping paper fundraiser. Orders were sent home with your daughter today.
