It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces on Monday as the students turned up for the first day back. It should be a very exciting term where we are able to really consolidate on the great work that has already been achieved so far this year. Open Day Invitation A school open day will be held on Wednesday 25 th July. The students have been busily preparing their work for the day. On this day parents, grandparents and interested adults will be invited to join in with their child s class and then tour the school. This is an opportunity for the students to showcase their great work to the entire community. Science Incursion Science is an integral part of our school curriculum and this term we are having a major focus on Science. As part of this focus, Mrs B has organised a Science incursion by Task Works. This will be happening on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The foundation to year four focus is on the Physical Sciences through the topic of push and pull. All students will be involved in a number of hands on activities. The year five and six students will be undertaking a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) unit also through a push and pull topic. This will also be a hands on practical experience. It will be a very exciting incursion for the students that will certainly stimulate conversation and inquiry. The cost of the excursion is $6.00 per child and this is being heavily subsidised by the school. Could all monies for the excursion please be at school by Tuesday 24 th July. Parents who receive the CSEF can elect to pay for the incursion through the CSEF. Please let your child s class teacher know. All students are expected to attend the incursion. Inquiry Units This term the students will be studying the following units and parents will have the opportunity to contribute to their child s learning Foundation: Design, Build, Shop-an Inquiry Unit on their local community. Grade 1/2: Minibeasts; Minibeasts in our garden Grade 3/4: World geography.. An inquiry based around the world map. Grade 5/6: Technology: How has technology changed since I was born? More information about these units of inquiry will be included in the team newsletters. Parent Opinion Survey Very soon a number of families will receive an invitation in the mail to complete our parent opinion survey for Each year, the school conducts an opinion survey amongst a sample of the school community. This year, a sample of approximately 30 per cent of parents will been randomly selected and invited to participate. Results will be used to inform and direct our future school planning and improvement. Your feedback is important to us. This is an opportunity for you to provide us with feedback on how we are doing as a school and what we need to do to keep improving. Please take the time to complete the online survey. They really enjoyed working in the Foundation room and pretending to be big school kids.

4 Page 4 24th July 2018 Grade 5/6 Camp The year 5/6 camp on the dates 6th June to 8th June to Neerim East was definitely a highlight this year. The students had a busy but interesting schedule with around ten different activities and challenges to conquer. During the activities, to our delight, the students demonstrated resilience and confidence and gave their best. They challenged their fears and tried to achieve the best at all times while showing team work. We as staff were incredibly proud of our students as they demonstrated the WRPS values of Respect, Compassion and Confidence at all times. It was a wonderful three days and everyone returned home feeling accomplished and relaxed. Ritika M

5 24th July 2018 Page 5 Grade 5/6 Camp On Wednesday, the 6th June, the 5/6 s went to the camp on the bus. We went to the Forest Edge Camp and all my friends came along. I enjoyed the Disco Night the most amongst all the activities. Desmond 5/6A My favourite memory from the camp was when we did the Flying Fox. Although people were scared and screamed, they still did it. I enjoyed staying in the cabin with my friends as we had so much fun but we did follow the rules. Alki 5/6B On June 6th, 7th, and 8th, some of the Year 5/6 s went to the Forest Edge Camp. One of my favourite activities was Low Ropes as it was challenging and my friends and I worked as a team to successfully achieve it. At camp, I enjoyed the Crate climbing because it was a lot of fun. I also liked Rock Climbing and I was able to reach the purple hand on the wall. But the most enjoyable was the movie night. Dennis 5/6A Sifeng 5/6C I thoroughly enjoyed Archery, Scavenger Hunt and Bush Walk on the camp. Well the best part was hanging around with my friends. Ava 5/6C On Wednesday, the 6th of June the grade 5/6 s went to the Forest Edge Camp by bus. The activities on the camp were Rock Climbing, Archery, Scavenger Hunt, Disc Golf, Bush Walking and many more! On the first night, we had the movie night. The movie we watched was The Night at the Museum. The second night we had an incredible Disco Night. Soon, June the 8th arrived and we had to go back to school. Since everyone had a lot of fun, we all went back to school with smiles on our faces. Vicky 5/6B On Wednesday, the 6th of June, 2018 the 5/6 s went for a two night camp to Neerim east on a bus. Once we arrived we were assigned our groups. I was in Mrs Mahajan s group. We had a variety of activities like Climbing Wall, Flying Fox, Hut Building and many more. My favourite part of the camp was when I went on the flying fox as while in the air you could see a beautiful scenic view. The camp was a lot of fun and very exciting. I loved every bit of it! 6 Page 6 24th July 2018 Visual Arts Semester One Visual Arts generated joy, excitement and allowed the students to scaffold skills to build confidence in art making. The inquiry focused art program is linked to the classroom inquiry topics. This helps the students to have rich conversations about their work increasing their Visual Arts vocabulary. The students are encouraged to work in small teams supporting each other by engaging in responding to artworks, sharing knowledge, exploring new techniques, materials and processes. This is a great way that they get to increase their confidence in creative talents encouraging a love for art in young people.

7 24th July 2018 Page 7 Community News BOOK WEEK 2018 Our annual Book Week parade is on Tuesday the 21 st of August. We are all dressing up as our favourite character from a book we love to read. Students will display their costumes at a special assembly at 9.15am in the middle area. Parents and friends are all welcome to come and take photos of our Book Week Parade! Our students will be dressed in their costumes for the entire day, but please pack more suitable clothing to change into if you feel they will be uncomfortable or cold throughout the day. They can change into their comfortable clothing after the parade, if required. Book Parade: Tuesday the 21 st of August 2018 Middle Area at 9.15 AM Start saving your pennies! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming very soon to the Library in the Middle Area. Sales will be straight after school on Tuesday the 14 th of August, Wednesday the 15 th of August and Thursday the 16 th of August. School Notices All school notices handed out to students for excursions, incursions, special events etc. will now be available on our website. Due to the time it takes and money it costs to print and hand out notices, students will only be given one notice. If that notice is lost or misplaced families will then have the ability to download a copy from our website. We thank you for your co operation in this matter. Uniform is Compulsory at WRPS School Council has endorsed a School Uniform policy, if you would like to read it s available via our website or the school office can arrange a copy for you. This means all our students are to dress in school uniform. We would appreciate parents/ carers assisting us with this and ensuring your children are dressed in correct uniform every day. Sick Students Deciding when to keep a sick child at home from school is not always easy. It s important for children to attend school but when a child is genuinely sick they need to stay home and be cared for by an adult in order to get well and to prevent spreading illness to others. The school does not have the facilities or the medical staff to care for students that are unwell. Please ensure your emergency details are kept up to date and provide the school with an alternative contact if you cannot be reached. We thank you for your cooperation and hope all families display our school value of RESPECT in this matter. A Reminder - Before and After School Supervision A reminder to all parents that students should not be arriving at school before 8:40am in the morning. Teachers will not be on duty to supervise their child before 8:40 am. Only those students attending the breakfast club should be at school prior to that time. At the conclusion of the school day all students should be picked up by 3:15pm at the latest. The school yard will be supervised until 3:15pm. If the students are playing on the play equipment, parents need to ensure that they are supervising their child. There will be no supervision after 3:15pm. Allan Waterson
