1 NOVEMBER 2018 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE: October has been an exciting month at St. Joseph s School. Students and Staff have been involved in many extraordinary events and initiatives. Our student s learning this past month has been greatly enhanced from the opportunities of some fantastic presentations. Grade 9 s had a morning with members from the Legislative Assembly, including Mr. Speaker, Robert E. Wanner. Our Grade 11 s participated in the new MADD Canada presentation educating them on the risks of impaired driving caused by alcohol and marijuana. The Grade 8 s and 9 s are now beginning their individual class presentations from local RCMP Cst. Lemay in regards to Internet Safety, sexting, sextortion, harassment, sexual-harassment, assault and sexual assault. Our primary goal every year is to provide a safe and caring school and these key educational opportunities are just one of the ways we are trying to help provide this to our school community. For parents, on November 5th at 7:00pm in the school library Cst. Lemay will be giving a presentation during our regular School Council meeting on Internet safety and cautions. The parental support this month was again amazing at our Graduation events. Both the Grad parent meeting and Grad Fashion show were packed. We truly appreciate the support in planning and preparing for Graduation and also the community involvement from sponsors to spectators at the Annual Fashion Show a truly epic event that I also want to thank our amazing staff volunteers for organizing and coordinating! It was a very special night for our students and their families. In the final week of October the excitement that makes St. Joe s School such a wonderful place continued! On October 31st our Students Union hosted their annual Haunted House which via student donation raised funds for the local charity of their choice; this year they chose the Odyssey House. A big thanks to Student s Union for making every month unique and exciting at St. Joe s. Thank you for your continued support of St. Joe s and may you all have a Blessed month ahead. We look forward to meeting with all of our parents at Parent Teacher Conferences which take place November 6th and November 7th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm in the school gym (no appointment necessary). At St. Joe s we truly believe that when students attend regularly and home and school have open communication that students will not only pass every subject but that they will also excel to extraordinary levels of skill development and understanding of the curriculum. If you are unable to attend PTI s please do not hesitate to open up the lines of communication with our teachers; to assist with this the office will continue to send a reminder bi-monthly (15th and 30th) to parents encouraging them to be active on Parent Portal to stay on top of student marks and attendance. Prior to parent-teacher conferences we encourage you to log into your parent portal in Power School to review your child s progress so far this year. God Bless R. Lauck ~ Principal

3 Grad 2019 News The Grads are having a bake sale during Parent Teacher Interviews, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 6 & 7. We are looking for baked goods to be donated for this event. Please have all donations brought to the school library by 3:00pm on Wednesday. The Grad class had their Annual Fashion Show on Monday, October 29 and it was a fantastic event enjoyed by all. Again this event was an awesome bonding evening and was a successful fundraiser for the class. Thank you to all of our very generous sponsors and numerous volunteers. 6 On behalf of Grande Prairie Centre for Newcomers (GPCN), we would like to remind new and existing Immigrant students about the continuation of the Settlement Worker in School (SWIS) program and Homework Club during this school year. These services are designed to assist immigrant students who would benefit from some extra supports on their academic journey. As well, we are available to assist immigrant students and their parents to integrate into their new communities and adjust to the school system in Alberta. The Settlement Office is located in the conference room next to Student Services (Room 131) and is open to students between the hours of 11:30am-4:00pm on Tuesdays. The Homework Club is now taking place in the Library on Tuesdays from 4:00pm- 6:00pm. Due to low numbers, Homework Club will not run on Thursdays. (if numbers increase we will offer the Thursday time as well) Please be aware that registration is required to attend Homework Club. The permission form is on the next page of this newsletter and is also available to pick up as a hard copy at the school office.

11 18 WHEELS OF CHRISTMAS 2018 FOOD/GIFTS DRIVE Where: The Grande Prairie Superstore Parking lot! Dates: December 8 th & 9 th Time: 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM both days! Rosenau Transport s 18 Wheels of Christmas has launched their 16 th year of working together with local businesses in support of the Food Banks in our communities, including Catholic Family Services. The goal is to fill a 53 trailer with non-perishable food items and new Toys for boys & girls of all ages. Last year, Catholic Family Services was able to provide over 40 families in need with a Christmas Hamper Program. CFS Christmas Hamper Program depends 100 % on community donations. This is done in a variety of ways: 1 Adopt an entire family. We provide information such as how many children, ages and gender. We also send a grocery list of the minimum amount of groceries that would be in each hamper. Once the hamper is completed it is delivered to our office and we in turn deliver it to the family. 2 Sponsors can purchase gift or food and then bring it to the office. We then use the items to compete baskets. 3 Sponsors have chosen to donate money and we take care of the shopping and wrapping. An average size family, the cost of a hamper is approximately $500+ as we like to provide enough food for the week.
