ATAR Results Denmark High School has a proud reputation for assisting students to reach their potential, academically, socially and in the sporting field. It is always a pleasure to hear of the success of our past students as they begin to live their independent, mature lives within the community and the world at large. Rebecca Halse, who graduated from this school in 2004 has achieved high praise in being named as Beginning Teacher of the Year 2013 in the Western Australian Education Awards. Rebecca was a straight A student at Denmark High School, and made the transition to Albany Senior High School in the days before this school offered a Senior School program. She was Dux of ASHS in Rebecca went onto study Law at UWA. After completing her first degree Rebecca decided her passion for education was something she really wanted to pursue. Throughout her developing years Rebecca was nurtured by her mother, Lynda Halse, who was an exceptional art teacher at Denmark High School for many years, and by the many inspirational teachers she had met along the way in public education. Rebecca completed a BA in History, the Classics and Ancient History and then a Graduate Diploma in Education. Rebecca was the recipient of the C. Sanders prize for the most outstanding student completing a Diploma in Education in her Year and the UWA Graduates Association Prize for achieving the best academic results in the Graduate Diploma of Education. Rebecca has also been invited to join the Rhodes Program which encourages and supports candidates to seek out international programs such as the Rhodes Scholarship. Congratulations on your achievements Rebecca and your continued support of public schools and the educators who work within them.. Once again the Year 12 ATAR students have done us proud. In the 2013 League Tables for the Top 50 schools. Denmark High School was the top country school and ranked 25th against some prestigious private and public schools. Denmark High School students also achieved 100% WACE Graduation in Our highest achieving student with a score of was Hannah Lloyd-Deely. Hannah was Denmark High School s WACE Dux for 2013 and achieved her success through hard work and dedication. She has chosen to study Environment Science/Law at UWA and I am confident that she will be a highly successful university student. Hannah received an Exhibition Award for Outdoor Education and she also received a Certificate of Excellence and a Certificate of Commendation. This is an outstanding achievement and Hannah was presented with her award at the Government House ballroom by The Minister for Education, The Hon Peter Collier MLA, on the 19 February There were eight students who achieved results in the 90 s: Mia Baxter-Holland (Pharmacy, Curtin University), Alana Cole (Early Childhood Education Curtin), Lachlan Kirk (Science/Engineering UWA), Eilidh MacMaster (Science UWA), Brianna Whitlock (UWA), Kelly Hoare (Medicine UWA), Alannah Spronk (UWA). I would like to especially congratulate Kelly Hoare on gaining entrance to the Graduate Medical Program at UWA. This is a significant achievement. Other successful students who have been accepted into university: Isaac Devitt-Boyd Sports Science Edith Cowan Zoe Ewing Curtin Gavin Kightly Education, Edith Cowan Madinah Madden Design, Curtin Emily McKenney Agribusiness Charles Stuart University, Muresk Lucy O Keefe Education, Murdoch Hayden Pomery Aviation Edith Cowan Kyle Thorpe Education, Sports Edith Cowan Lily Watson Arts Curtin prep course Blake Perkins Commerce UWA

While congratulating the students it is also worth reflecting on the excellent support that the students were provided by the teaching staff at this school. In particular, I would like to acknowledge Ken Davies who has provided outstanding teaching and preparation for the students studying Outdoor Education. Three Exhibition winners in three years: Kayla Pomery 2011, Michaela Ross 2012 and Hannah Lloyd-Deely address Minister Redman acknowledged what a good school Denmark High School is and applauded the efforts of the leadership team and our staff in successfully steering the school from a Year 8-10 High School to a Year 8-12 Senior High School. He highlighted the excellent results achieved by students, the value of the basketball program, the various theatrical productions and the success of our FESA cadet unit. Ken Davies and Hannah Lloyd- Deely The building program has given us a library that not only has a large research and reading area, but a computer nook, a video conferencing facility and online learning rooms, and a large lecture theatre space. The total area is 480 square meters. Four Science laboratories were created as well a technician preparation area, and a newly refurbished multi-purpose room. Bronwyn Mather has also been recognised for her outstanding work for the last 4 years in having this school considered a Top School for the teaching of 3A/ 3B Maths and congratulations to Jeff McPherson for being recognised for his work with the 2C/2D Maths class in We now have new facilities for Food Science, Textiles and Drawing and Visual Arts. But by far the largest and perhaps the best fitted out area in the new build is the Design and Technology area. We have a woodwork room, machine room, metals area and a computer laboratory. A Trade Training Centre for the delivery of Building and Construction was also built from Commonwealth funds. Australia needs well educated and trained citizens and Denmark High School is well equipped to do just that. On the 7 th December The Hon. Terry Redman officiated at the official opening of The 7 million dollar Royalties for Regions building program at Denmark High School. In his opening In 2014 we are expanding our course offerings to include Certificate II in Building and Construction, Certificate II in Hospitality and a Certificate II in Sport and Recreation and Outdoor Education. 6 In 2013 the Half Cohort of students entered Senior Schooling across Western Australia. This saw a temporary slump in Senior School numbers at Denmark High School after a period of steady growth. As a percentage of enrolments Senior School fell from a peak of 32% to 20%. Expected enrolments of 65 year 11 in 2014, and again in 2015, will see a significant growth in student choice and programs. Student Numbers by Year Lower Secondary Senior Secondary Total Though there was some change in the mix of students, total retention of students remained high as demonstrated by the table below. There was also an inflow of students from outside our catchment as news of our previous successes spread Male Female Total Year Year Male Female Total Year Year Careful scheduling ensured that choice of courses available to students was not unduly affected by the temporary fall in student numbers. Denmark High School continued to offer a large range of Courses of Study, supplemented by a range of Vocational and Council Endorsed Programs. The students undertaking VET courses all completed trade qualifications at Certificate II or III level. A small number of students studied only Stage 1 courses but all of these undertook some work placements to determine a career pathway. A breakdown of courses completed by students is demonstrated in the table below. Year 12 Course Unit Number Percentage Participation Stage One Stage Two 24 7 Stage Three Once again Denmark High School featured in the list of top schools in the WACE examination tables. Students had a median WACE score of 71.4% and 30% of students had at least one score in excess of 75%. This ranked Denmark High School in 25 th position in Western Australia, and amongst an elite group of Private schools and highly respected metropolitan State Schools. Ken Davies, Bronwyn Mather and Jeff McPherson were acknowledged as highly successful teachers together with our Exhibition winner Hannah Lloyd-Deely at the annual Schools Curriculum and Standards Authority State Awards evening. This is our school s fourth attendance at these awards in the 5 years we have offered examinable WACE courses, reflecting the quality of teaching and learning at Denmark High School. Students applying to TISC to attend various local universities dominated our school leaver population and their outcomes are summarised below. NB: This table does not show the successful applications to Notre Dame and interstate universities.

The destinations for our students were strongly skewed toward University or future University entry, with 68% of our 2012 cohort either at University or deferring and taking a Gap Year. The difficulties for students without accommodation in Perth or those with parents in middle income brackets remain an ongoing obstacle to many of our students moving directly to further studies. The requirements to establish independence under Youth Allowance, also force many to undertake full time work when preparatory courses could otherwise be undertaken at local tertiary institutions. Despite these obstacles, our students continue to demonstrate high levels of achievement and resilience.

The implementation of the new Australian Curriculum was a high priority in 2013 for all Pathway 1 and 2 students. Those students within the Year 9 and 10 cohort group that had numeracy and literacy problems were provided learning opportunities to meet the needs of each individual student. Mathletics, Think Tank Cards, Investigations and other resources situated within the classroom enabled us to extend the higher performing student. Learning area grade Distribution for Year 8. 10 NAPLAN: The NAPLAN results for 2013 were sound but indicate that there is further development work to be done, especially in building student capability to successfully complete the Writing component of the test. The Writing mean for Denmark SHS was 522 versus the Australian mean of 554. The Spelling and Grammar at 578 and 581 respectively were on par with the Australian means of 583 and 573. The Reading mean, 592, was superior to the Australian average, 580, and reflected a significant improvement on the previous year s result. This positive result is a reflection of improved classroom practice in response to the 2012 results. In each of the categories, Denmark High School s achievement was less than its Like Schools; a difference most marked in the Writing result. While it may not be realistic to expect complete parity in performance with Like Schools, it should be an expectation that Denmark s results will more closely reflect those of schools with a similar demographic. students scored in excess of 80, with highest being The correlation, like previous years, remained very high at 0.88 indicating that the students were ranked appropriately. However, the average moderation of -7.7 was significantly higher than both Like Schools and the rest of the State. One cause for this was the number of students at the bottom end of the cohort whose exam performance was significantly worse than their school mark. The data would suggest that there is a need to spread these students further in the school assessment process. An area of concern emerging from the Reading and Writing results was the level of inconsistency between school and test performance. Significant numbers of students performed outside their notional expected range, some by quite large margins. The variations in performance were across the cohort and while some students test better than others, there should be a reasonable degree of correlation between a NAPLAN score and the final grade for a student. Lower School: Overall the grading profile across Years 8-10 indicates a consistent paucity of A grades in comparison with both DoE and Like Schools while the C grade achievement is comparatively high against these two yardsticks. This grading profile is consistent over time and is strongly suggestive of a level of conservatism in marking. It reflects a need to revisit the relevant standards documents and samples to ensure that students are being suitably rewarded for their achievement. Year 9 NAPLAN data and Year 12 achievement data are supportive of the need to review the levels of lower school achievement and for there to be a re-examination of grades around the C/B and B/A cut off points. Year 12: The 2013 WACE results in English were sound. The average scaled score of 57.8 was comparable to both Like Schools at 59.1 and the State at Three

The WAMSE results for Year 9 students indicate that Denmark HS has a similar distribution to like schools with Denmark having slightly more students in the lower 20% and slightly less in the top 20%. This was taken by 7 students in % of these students achieved a B or C grade. These results are limited by the fact that the Denmark cohort was less than 10 students. Percentages of students in top 20%, middle 60%, bottom 20% of the State and among Like Schools Year 9 Society & Environment State School Like Schools Top 20% 16 % 22 % 25 % 21 % 34 % 29 % SCHOOL EVENTS Middle 60% Bottom 20% 68 % 69 % 59 % 65 % 58 % 57 % 16 % 9 % 16 % 14 % 8 % 14 % The Denmark Grade distribution summaries indicate that Denmark is consistently above DoE schools in the A, B and C grade distribution summaries. This may indicate a need for further moderation exercises to ensure the accuracy of these grades. Denmark is lower than Like schools in the proportion of A grades and slightly higher in B grades. C grades indicate a far higher percentage of C grades than in like schools The Society and Environment department of Denmark High School also holds several significant events which are well received: Year 8 s had a medieval feast at the end of Semester one to wrap up the historical studies of the first semester. Year 9 students once again competed for the RSL award which results in the winner travelling to Canberra and participating in both the school and town ANZAC day celebrations. That standard was extremely high this year and the RSL awarded two extra prizes. Year 9 exhibitions were conducted in the last week of school for the year. Once again the standard was extremely high parents were impressed to see the work produced by their children.

advanced, which allows students to choose the level suitable to their abilities. We now have a refurbished dedicated computer lab with all new equipment which has provided an enriched teaching and learning environment. The purchase of class sets of texts was made this year to compliment the teaching of Adobe Creative suite 6 across all courses offered in IT. Year 8 The Year 8 course is designed to familiarise each student with our school computer system, its capabilities and provide students with basic skills which can be used across all learning areas. In 2013 each student studied IT for 100 minutes per week for a semester. The results varied this year due to a number of influences. Underperforming students were offered varied curriculum and strategies to encourage greater participation. Year 9 and 10 Information Processing The focus for students in Semester One was continued use of Adobe Photoshop and applying these skills to desktop publishing and the creation of a magazine. Computer Projects was offered in semester two and was a popular choice by the students. The results for both courses varied with the more diligent and motivated students showing a real flare for technology achieving excellent results. Year 9 and 10 Information Technology The popular robotics course continued using the NXT Lego Robotics equipment. With new robotics equipment and software purchased at the end of 2013, it will enable more students to participate using the latest EV3 Lego Robotics technology. The Robotics camp to compete in the WA State Robo Cup was offered in 2013, but due to insufficient numbers did not occur. All Information Technology students competed successfully in a national competition NCSS Challenge run by the University of Sydney over 5 weeks which complemented the course material. The NCSS Challenge offers a range of levels from beginners to Due to the increased skill level and interest Computer Science Stage 2AB will run for the first time in One of the goals of offering Information Technology in Year 9 and 10 is to create a pathway to study Computer Science in Year 11/12 and then on to university. Year 11 and 12 Applied Information Technology 1C/D was offered in 2013 initially with a smaller group of students. As the year progressed more students enrolled in Applied Information Technology resulting in 16 students successfully completing the course with some very pleasing results. With increasing student numbers both AIT and Computer Science will run at DHS in Achievements *Updated facilities with extra computer labs being created for equitable computer access for all students *The purchase of class sets of texts was made this year to compliment the teaching of Adobe Creative suite 6 across all courses offered in IT. *National Computer Science School (NCSS) University of Sydney, Programming Challenge 2013 Twenty eight Year 9 and 10 students participated in a range of courses from Beginners to Advanced Growth in IT *Increased number of students studying IT will see the commencement of Computer Science stage 2A/B in 2014 *Continued growth of Robotics using existing NXT Lego and additional purchases enabling students to participate using the latest EV3 Lego Robotics technology

Year 8 A compulsory component of the Home Economics Year 8 course and a vital introduction to the Technology Process is the production of various items including a pencil case and apron. The sustainable and recyclable focus sees the students well prepared for starting the food course at Week 15. Similar to 2012, students found it challenging working in the food room and all are looking forward to a dedicated room in Year 9 and 10 Due to increased Senior-school classes and limited classroom availability Textiles for Year 9 & 10 was not offered on the timetable in 2011 and 2012, however a class was offered in Semester 2 in Eleven highly productive and creative students thoroughly enjoyed the course. With the designated design studio for 2014 teaching and learning will be much more enjoyable. An emphasis on healthy foods and healthy cooking methods is encouraged throughout all food classes. Sustainability in the selection of ingredients and recycling of our waste products is a focus within our classes. We have a herb garden to allow students to experiment in cooking, and garnishes for final presentation. Our food scraps are fed to the resident chickens, and their eggs are collected by and used by the Cottage for food preparation. We hope to expand our herb plot to growing our own common use vegetables for A set of 10 IPADS joined the classroom at the beginning of 2013 and were a valuable resource for students. Clashes of 2 food classes at the same time slot caused a little inconvenience on a Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon all year. Shared classes between teachers (Friday afternoon) a are also a disadvantage to students. Fortunately experienced and collaborative staff are able to manage the situation well. The building program of 2013 was disruptive to all courses. During the week of the move all lower school food students assisted with the relocation and set up of equipment. Food teachers and assistants gave up much personal time (including an entire weekend) to ensure that the impact on students learning was minimal. Unfortunately numerous building issues (lack of power points, high noise levels, and frequent interruptions) continued to disrupt, but most were rectified by the end of the year. One of the main advantages of the new facility is the 10 student work benches (previously only 8) allowing students to be more hands on and independent. The new classroom has been fitted out with new equipment which the students have enjoyed and respected. Open Day in December was a welcome opportunity to display what we offer to the community. Our Year 8 students had prepared scones to sell as Devonshire teas and 6 students volunteered their assistance to demonstrate their cooking skills. Year 8 This course prepares students with basic life skills, nutritional knowledge and cooking techniques to prepare them for post school life. Students enjoy this new found independence and the new recipes and discussions discovered each week. An issue that continues to concern is the changeover of classes and swapping between teachers half way through the year. Relationships built earlier in the year are then suddenly cut short and need to be re-established with a new teacher. It is also difficult with students who have not commenced this subject in Semester 1 entering mid-year having missed the first 5 weeks of Food. Year 9 and 10 The new Café Barista course commenced in 2012 has proved popular in Class sizes were at capacity and it is evident that students are using their certificates and skills to gain employment in the local café industry. This is a course designed specifically to give our students the opportunity to gain vital life skills to make them more employable particularly in our tourist town with many cafes and restaurants. Teacher Jodie Pollard is a trained Barista and the new Espresso machine purchased in 2012 has been relocated in the new classroom. Gourmet Traveller and My Restaurant Rules are always popular classes filled to capacity with students being able to tailor their learning around their interests and abilities.

Year 11/12 FST Stage 2 Due to the small Year 11 cohort of 2013, the Stage 2 class was combined with Year 12 Stage 1 which included 2 foreign exchange students. The various course requirements and varying learning abilities has proved challenging. The majority of students will continue on to Stage 3 next year. It is vital that at the end of Year 10 these students are counselled and courses are selected that best fits their level of achievement, or these students will struggle going into Year 12. FST Stage 3 Food, Science and Technology was offered for the first time in 2013 at Stage 3 (in addition to Stage 1&2). Seven students completed the Stage 3 course. All seven used this subject as their best mark in calculating their ATAR.

There has been considerable expenditure in the D&T area with most of the money going towards equipping the new Certificate II in Building and Construction course with industry standard tools and equipment. However, at this stage there is still a need for some more purchases of specific hand tools and equipment to complete our inventory. Most of these items are one-off purchases and will assist us in meeting the needs of our incoming lower school students in 2015 and beyond. There has been a rise in interest in the area as more students become aware of the possibilities for them in Senior-school with some of our current Year 9 s already asking about courses that may run for them in Year 11. Already in 2014 we are seeing a new attitude in the Senior school students with greater responsibility and an increased understanding of the benefits of having a new facility to work in. Year 8 These Students were enrolled in taster course: covering basic skill development in plastics, woodwork and metalwork. Basic skills include measuring, marking and cutting a variety of materials. however we were able to introduce some more exciting elements of metals in the form of casting and forging to those interested students. Woodwork saw students in a similar situation to metals, however, the models students built were developed so that students did not begin projects that were beyond the available time for completion. Having some new equipment in the form of air bradders has assisted in speeding up completion rates as well as being able to introduce new skills and safety training to students. Many of the Year 9 students have been attracted to programs in other schools for 2014, which may impact on the number of courses available for Year 10 students. This is an area that we will need to examine this year to plan for this eventuality in the future. Year 10 Metalwork, Woodwork and a Design and Technology caters for the artistic flair and individual design aspects of project construction Numerous students improved their skills in welding, braising, small scale fabrication, sheet metal work and forging. Woodwork: Students engaged in simple wood construction, ornamental lathe work and finishing. Metalwork: Students engaged in basic sheet metal work, brazing and joining of metals. New and dedicated Woodwork facility placed on operational guidelines of new machines along with a focus on workshop safety, maintaining safe working habits and a tidy work environment was implemented during second semester. Year 9 In these classes there is an increasing focus on design and more complex skill development. This allows those students wishing to pursue D&T in Year 10 and Senior school to begin to establish more advanced manual skills and techniques. In 2013 there was some disruption to our second semester programme due to the relocation,.

Year 8 This course was an introduction to different processes and techniques as well as the language of the Visual Arts. There was also a focus on exploring different materials and media. This included the three different sources of inspiration drawing from real life, imagination and collected images. Students had the opportunity to experience a range of different media both wet and dry (inks, paints and dyes to chalks and pencils). They also work in 3 dimensions, on a ceramic sculpture or tile as well as producing 2 dimensional works. Students were introduced to Art History as well as encouraged to reflect through self-evaluation of their own work. The focus for the Stage 2 students was to develop their media proficiency and develop a style. Stage 1 students were give opportunities to experience a wide range of processes and develop their own work based on their discoveries. Other It was a difficult year for both students and myself. There was no Internet access for 6 months which at times hindered art analysis and design development. The students adapted well to the restricted space of the CSL for the first six months and then the move to the new building with its new facilities and space. Year 9 & 10 Visual Art and Art Extension This provided students with an additional opportunity to develop their design and practical skills. The focus was on giving the students more complex tasks that built on the skill they had already acquired in Year 8 & 9. Students were introduced to the techniques of printmaking and multiple colour textile printing, ceramic and wire sculptures and painting. There was a more specific focus on understanding and the appreciation of various well-regarded international and Australian artists. Students were also required to accurately document their design processes and reflect on their work thought documented self-evaluation. Art Extension also provided the students with an opportunity working as a group, to design and execute a mural, which represented the Shire of Denmark in Perth. Year 11 & 12 - Stage 1 and Stage 2 Two courses were run consecutively in the same class Stage 1 and 2, although at times difficult due to the different course requirements, the students achieved a range of diverse and successful work. They were required to create 2 major works over the year as well as an Art Journal of designs and ideas. Students were required to become versed in art language as well as understand the basic foundations and principles of analysing art works and applying these to the construction of their own work.

2013 saw the DHS prefecture continue to develop its presence in the school community. The students worked hard behind the scenes to improve peer mentoring and intervention with lower school students, liaising with staff to assist in conflict management and resolution. More visible tasks of the prefects included a strong presence in the ball organising committee, several fund raising events, including a highly successful social for the Borderless Friendship Organisation, Tasmanian Bushfire appeal and Jeans for Genes day. The Prefects were also the DHS student representatives at several non-school events such as the Denmark ANZAC Day Ceremony and the annual Youth Breakfast in Albany. The prefects have developed as a group in terms of the organisation of school assemblies and assisting in the student management of incursions such as the Hawaiian Ride for Youth, visits from AIDS Council Representatives and other youth focussed organisations. Throughout the year there were several discussions with the Principal and Admin Staff regarding the DHS Formal School uniform. Some forward planning began, however, this has been put on hold for 2014 due to other issues taking precedence Year 12 Prefects Front Row: Rhianna Cullinan, Kelly Hoare, Hannah Lloyd-Deely, Emily McKenney Back Row: Jacob Wilson, Joshua Potier, Kyle Thorpe, Lucy O Keefe, Brianna Whitlock
