1 4 Campbell St, Karori Wellington 0 Tel gm@orienteering.org.nz Orienteering NZ Update for August-September 04 gm@orienteering.org.nz Don t forget to register for the website so you can post your own news, blogs, events etc POLICY UPDATES The Council have approved the following policy updates: World Schools Orienteering Championships 0 This Objective of this Policy: To select the schools to represent New Zealand at the World Schools Orienteering Championships. CAMPS JUNIOR -8 December Orienteering New Zealand in conjunction with the Wellington Orienteering Club is planning a training camp in December in the Wairarapa. It is a wonderful opportunity for secondary school students to improve their technical skills, meet other students from around the country and train with some of our elite coaches who have many years of international experience. Orienteering New Zealand has secured funding from Pub Charity ($0,000) and Pelorus Trust ($,000) to help offset the costs of this camp. Expressions of Interest and more information on the camp can be found at: D-SQUAD 8 December Nick Smith is co-ordinating a D-Squad training camp in Horowhenua for the week prior to the Camp. This Camp will be by invitation to suitable orienteers as places are limited. Orienteering New Zealand has applied for funding for this camp, but until this is confirmed we are unable to advise the cost. We are hoping to keep the cost to the same level as the 0 camp fee. More information on this Camp will be advised through the Orienteering NZ website. Don t forget to check out the Events Calendar on the Orienteering NZ websites for all Upcoming Events..
2 WORLD SCHOOLS ANNOUNCEMENTS REPRESENTATIVE SCHOOL Congratulations to the following schools who have been selected as Representative Schools in the following categories at the World Schools Orienteering Championships in Turkey 8- April 0 M Senior Boys W Senior Girls M Boys W Girls Napier Boys High School Napier Boys High School REPRESENTATIVE TEAM DECISION In the World Orienteering School Championships (WOSC) Selection Notice published on July 04, Orienteering NZ reserved the right to select a New Zealand representative team for the WSOC. Orienteering NZ chooses not to invoke this right to select Representative Teams to attend the 0 World Schools Orienteering Championships in Turkey. The rationale behind this decision is:. The event is not recognised by the IOF as a premier world orienteering event**, and despite its name, is regarded as less prestigious than other international competitions we currently select teams for and support;. Any selection which is not performance based may end being financially driven, and this is not the basis by which Orienteering NZ select representative teams. Any selection of Representative Teams for future World Schools Orienteering Championships will be determined in relation to the status of the event and the policies of Orienteering NZ at the time. Orienteering NZ actively recognises there is keen interest in young orienteers competing internationally and we are working closely with Australia to provide events which are not only of a high standard but are also financially more achievable for more young orienteers. We are also exploring additional forms of competition between the two countries to offer the sport to a wider junior audience. We encourage any orienteers who had indicated an interest in the World Schools Orienteering Championships in Turkey to consider participating in the upcoming Australian Championships, the Oceania Championships in Tasmania in January 0 or other IOF recognised international events. ** This event is being run under the auspices of the International School Sport Federation & Turkish School Sports Federation. ORIENTEERING NZ VACANCIES Applications are still be invited for the following positions: High Performance Leader National Squad Coaching Co-ordinator The High Performance Leader is primarily responsible for raising the performance levels of a selected group of elite orienteers and providing a believable pathway to success for the NZ High Performance Orienteering community with a view to improving the results achieved by New Zealand representative teams. The National Squad Coaching Co-ordinator is primarily responsible for raising the performance levels of a selected group of elite orienteers, with a view to improving the results achieved by New Zealand representative teams. The Coaching Co-ordinator also assists the ONZ Selection Panel in selecting Squad members. Volunteer position for an appointment term of -years.
