1 St. Joseph the Worker School May 2018 News Auction Preliminary numbers are $90,000. Thank you to all parents, parishioners, and merchants who helped make this possible. A special thank you to the auction committee who put so much time and effort into making the auction such a great success! Bake Sale The Sixth Graders will be having a bake sale to raise money to Beautify Beal City on the morning of June 1. The money raised will be used for flowers and flags. Band Concert The Spring Band Concert is scheduled for Sunday, May 20 at 2 PM. Our Sixth Graders will be performing. Bags We will be painting and putting new flooring in three classrooms and the library. Ms. Smith is requesting reusable grocery bags to help with the packing up and moving of library books. If you have any that you could donate to the library please send them to school by June 1. If you would like them returned, label the bags and we will return when finished using. Thank you. Dress Code Please review the dress code to make sure your child is in compliance. Skirts closer to the knee than the behind please. Leggings worn under skirts to the ankle. No capris or sandals. May Crowning Please join us for the crowning of Mary on Thursday, May 3 at 8 AM. Mary will be crowned by Sixth Graders Olivia Kunik and Dylan Elias. 50/50 Raffle The last 50/50 Raffle of this school year will be on Saturday and Sunday, May 12 & 13 at all Masses. Volunteers are needed. Please go to Sign Up Genius. Thank you to all those who have volunteered to sell tickets this year. Spelling Bee Congratulations to Olivia Kunik and Dylan Elias who will represent our school at the Morning Sun/WCFX Regional Spelling Bee on Tuesday, May 15 th at 7 PM. Everyone is invited to come cheer them on at the Broadway Theater that evening. Spring Book Fair The Scholastic Spring Book Fair will be held April 30 May 4. All books are buy one get one free (equal or lesser value). Students will have the opportunity to shop during the day. Girls on the Run Third through Fifth Grade girls will be completing their 5K run in Harrison, MI on Saturday, May 19 th. More details will be sent home with the GOTR participants.

2 Graduation Our Sixth Graders will be graduating from St. Joseph the Worker School on Sunday, June 10 at the 10:30 AM Mass. Music Classes The Spring Sing will be on Thursday, May 31 at 1 PM. Recycling Thank you to everyone who has helped out with our recycling program this year. It has been very successful! Religion this weekend. Congratulations to our Second Graders who will celebrate the sacrament of First Eucharist SCRIP Just a reminder that SCRIP Gift Certificates/Cards make great Mother s Day and Graduation gifts. Tuition and Fees The Tuition is to be paid in full by June 1. The $100 per student fee and registration form are past due. All set? If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Hauck ( ). Youth Services Unit The Youth Services Unit of Mt. Pleasant is once again accepting applications for the Youth Police Academy. This program is open to students going into the 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade this fall. The academy runs July 9 th -26 th, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Cadets will gain insight into a career in law enforcement through hands-on activities such as building searches, defensive tactics and emergency response demonstrations. If you are interested, call Diane Fussman ( ) at BCPS for an application. CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS Kindergarten The Kindergartners have been working hard learning all their sight words! They have learned over 63 words so far! The Kindergarteners also learned how to write all the uppercase letters correctly. Mrs. Gus refers to D Nealian as the fancy way. In Math they have been busy learning about greater than and lesser than. The Kindergartners have been busy learning how to add. They have been focusing on the concept that adding 3 and 2 makes 5. In the next week or so they will transition to 3+2=5 in their Math Books! Spring has sprung and the planting will start in the Kindergarten classroom! They will be planting plants soon and will be anxiously waiting for them to grow! Kindergartners are also watching an Eagle s Nest from Pittsburgh!

3 First Grade The First Graders are observing caterpillars called Painted Lady. When the caterpillars arrived, they were only about ½ inch long. They are growing every day. The students have been doing observations and experiments. They will discover what the caterpillars eat and hopefully get to witness the life cycle change from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. In Math, the First Graders have completed units on time and calendar. They reviewed days of the week, months and seasons. They learned to tell time to the hour and half hour. They are now working on numbers to 100 and will be learning addition and subtraction of 3-digit numbers. Mrs. Clark s First Graders are learning about the special helper, the Holy Spirit. They are learning how the Holy Spirit is always with us, leading and guiding us. Second Grade Last month Second Graders sent out the character Flat Stanley to family and friends around the globe. They have started getting many back in the mail. They sent out a special Flat Stanley to the Pope and received it back with a picture and letter. Mrs. Lambert and the class were super excited and Father Tom came to their room and hung up the Pope and Flat Stanley on their bulletin board. In math the students are continuing to practice their multiplication facts. They learned about picture graphs and are now moving into fractions.

4 The Second Graders in Science just finished up talking about property of Matter and are going to start land forms. In Language Arts the students get 12 new spelling words each week and three bonus words. Our Second Graders are amazing spellers. They work on vocabulary building, stories, and grammar. They love being in Second Grade!!!!! Third Grade In Science the Third Graders have received their critters and plants that go along with their science unit. They are now the proud owners of crayfish and Bess Beetles! Mrs. Sprague s class is discussing government and all that it entails at the local, state, and national levels. The Third Graders are looking forward to their field trip to Lansing s capitol building next fall. In reading the class is talking about magnets and magnetism in their Journeys series. They will also be making their own magnets! Mrs. Sprague has been reading books in the series The Lemonade War. There are many in the series. How many will they get through before the school year ends? In Math the Third Graders continue their quest to learn their multiplication tables before the end of the school year!!! They just completed a chapter on real-world problem solving. Fourth Grade The Fourth Graders will be studying the history, people, landforms, and resources of the Southwest Region in Social Studies. In Math the class has been busy with geometry. They have been learning about the properties of squares and rectangles, and how to find the area and perimeter of these shapes. The Fourth Grade has started their Life Science unit called Organisms in Their Environments. Students learn about the basic needs of plants and animals, how organisms interact with one another within their habitat, and how the environment affects food webs within different habitats. The students will construct both a land and aquatic habitat within the classroom. The aquatic habitat includes snails, guppies and African Dwarf Frogs. Come check them out! Later in May the students will read the novel, Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. The theme that ties all of the characters in this novel together is the plight of the burrowing owls and whether they will be destroyed to make way for a pancake house that is supposed to be built on top of their homes. This novel goes great with the Life Science unit on the environment and the organisms that live in it.

5 Fifth Grade In Math the Fifth Graders will be starting a unit on percents. They will be expressing fractions as percents, learning how to compute a percent of a number, and applying percent s in real world situations. The class will be beginning their unit on systems and survival in Science. The classroom will have tree frogs and hermit crabs to observe! Fifth Graders will learn about God s mercy. Mercy is the loving kindness that God shows to sinners. The Corporal Works of Mercy are loving actions by which we respond to the basic physical needs of others. The Spiritual Works of Mercy are loving actions by which we respond through the basic spiritual needs of others. Sixth Grade In Reading the Sixth Graders have been reading a story called First to Fly in their Journeys Reading Series. They have also been practicing how to spell words that have silent letters in them. Mr. Shirley s class has been learning how to formulate algebraic equations and inequalities. In their next chapter in Math they will be learning how to use and graph Coordinate Planes. Students are hard at work researching for their country reports. Most students have completed their outlines and are beginning to write their reports. Reports will be due on May 22 nd.
