2 Our Reading Workshop includes the following components: Read Aloud Shared Reading Guided Reading Independent Reading Balanced literacy includes Writer s Workshop. Our writing program consists of the following components: Guided Writing Independent Writing Shared Writing Grammar and Conventions

3 WORD STUDY A component of writing where we make words in class to apply to our daily writing. Each grading period we will have a district WORD STUDY test that is part of the language writing grade. It is also posted on the KISD website: 2nd grade Word Study

4 MATH Math is taught through a guided math approach. The framework of guided math has the following components: Whole group mini-lesson Small group instruction Skill focused work stations Independent practice

5 SCIENCE Second graders will develop an understanding of science concepts through a hands-on learning approach. In 2 nd grade, the science curriculum will provide opportunities for students to participate in the following: Scientific processes Health/human body Sound, force, and motion Heat, light, and sound energy Patterns and Cycles in Nature Weather Organisms and Environments Plants

6 SOCIAL STUDIES The central themes on which our units will be developed include: Citizenship Communities Map skills Geography Government Economic systems Historical Figures and Innovators U.S. Symbols and Landmarks Cultural celebrations

7 We have a 4 day SPECIALS rotation that will include: Art, PE (2 days), and Music. We are in specials from 10:40 11:30. Please make sure your child is wearing tennis shoes on PE days! LUNCH: Our lunch is from 11:55 12:25 Lunch visitors may include parents, non-school age siblings, and grandparents. All others will need parent permission. We respectfully ask that only 2 visitors come at a time and ALL visitors must check in through the front office prior to coming to the cafeteria. This year, we now have a separate parent table for you to enjoy lunch with your child. Only your child may join you at this table.

9 CLASS DOJO Class Dojo is used in all 2 nd grade classes for behavior reinforcement. Information on how to sign up has been sent home this week. 1 point = 1 BARK buck Friday is redemption day so all students will be paid first thing in the morning so that they can purchase from our Bark Buck Menu. The Bark Buck Menu changes each nine weeks and offers a variety of rewards for students to choose from.

10 You will receive a weekly from your child s teacher every Monday by 4pm. This will include a snapshot of our grade level newsletter that will contain weekly homework assignments, upcoming assessments, school events, and current learning objectives. A link to our grade level website will be included for you to access and will be a great resource for you to use throughout the year. You may also find scanned copies of weekly homework along with helpful curriculum links and teacher favorites! Please contact your child s teacher if you are not receiving this weekly .

11 Birthdays are very special days and we love taking time to celebrate your child! TREATS According to new district policy, all birthday treats must be store bought with an ingredient list attached (this includes donuts). All treats must be dropped off in the office before 10am in order for our nurse to check for classroom allergies. Please be sure to your child s teacher prior to sending treats to ensure that we do not have any other prior activities planned. Sending napkins would also be greatly appreciated!

12 INVITATIONS It is district policy that no birthday invitations be passed out at school. Please use our school directory to contact friends outside of school. If myself (or any other teacher) sees birthday invitations being passed out, we must collect them and you may pick them up from your child s teacher.

13 Grades are counted differently dependent upon the assignment. Homework is always counted at 10% All other daily work/quizzes are counted at 90% Common Assessments (unit tests) are counted twice at 90% Common Assessments: A study guide for the common assessment will be sent home 1 week prior to the assessment. All common assessments will be retaught and reassessed if your child receives a score below 70, however, the highest grade possible will be a 70.

14 Your child is encouraged to read 20 minutes each day! Homework that is assigned will always be sent home on Monday and due on Friday! Homework will be considered late if turned in after Monday and the student will receive 10 points off each day it is late up to a total of 3 days. Don t forget that the newsletter is a great place to check on homework assignments for the week!

15 BLUE TAKE HOME FOLDER: Your child has a blue take home folder that will need to travel with your child daily and emptied nightly. We no longer have Tuesday folders so please be sure to check this folder for graded papers, upcoming event fliers, school information, common assessment reviews, and homework. This is also where you can send doctor notes, notes to your child s teacher, or lunch money (you can also sign up for MealPay Plus and reload your child s account electronically). Please be sure to encourage your child to take their folder to their teacher if you have sent something with them. PLANNERS: Planners are a great communication tool between parents and teachers so please be sure to check and sign your child s planner nightly (they will receive 1 dojo point everyday it comes in signed)! Your child should be writing in their planner at least every Monday.

16 SNACKS: We do have a working snack around 9:30. Please send a healthy, dry snack that will not require a utensil. Cookies and sweets will be saved for lunch. WATER BOTTLES: We encourage all students to bring in a water bottle that can be resealed with a lid. This helps avoid lost instruction time for frequent water breaks. Please only send water as juice and other alternatives will be saved for lunch time.

17 BATHROOM CARDS: In an order to prevent classroom disruptions and ensure all students get the most out of their learning environment we will begin using bathroom cards next week. Your child will receive a bathroom card each month which provides them 2 opportunities to use the restroom throughout the day. The student must have a teacher sign their bathroom card for each time they go to the restroom during class time. Free bathroom time is before school and during lunch. All other times require a sign out. Students will earn an extra BARK buck for every unused bathroom break per week. If the student loses their card they are unable to cash in at the end of the month. DRESS CODE: Shorts and skirts must be longer than fingertips when arms are held down at the sides. Please ensure your child comes dressed appropriately to school or you may be called to bring a change of clothes. It s also a good idea to keep a spare change of clothes in your child s backpack!

18 ID s: In an effort to improve campus safety, all staff and students are required to wear their ID at all times while in the building. If your child misplaces their ID, parents are responsible for all replacement costs. The ID is $3, the plastic sleeve is $2, and the lanyard is $5. The Creech lanyard is currently the only acceptable lanyard at this time. TRANSPORTATION CHANGES: All transportation changes must be made in writing from the parent. Please send the note in the blue take home folder and instruct your child to give the note to their teacher first thing in the morning. s and phone calls will NOT be accepted as a valid change.
