We will be holding our annual Parents Night events when we return from the Labor Day weekend, and we hope you will make plans to attend. The 6 th Grade Parents Night will take place on Tuesday, September 5 th, and the 7 th Grade Parents Night will take place on Wednesday, September 6 th. Both evenings will begin with food and conversation in the West Campus Dining Hall, and then parents will have a chance to meet the teachers and learn about each of the classes. Full schedules and more information will be included in next week s bulletin, and we look forward to seeing you all there. 6-7 PARKING LOTS With the start of the year comes a reminder that patience and common sense driver etiquette will go a long way toward making the crowded parking spaces on the West Campus flow more smoothly. The mornings tend to run fairly well, but the afternoons can be tricky, especially with an entirely new class of students, the staggered start dates and times of clubs and activities, and the fact that, frankly, these lots are being asked to handle more traffic than was initially envisioned years ago. Plans are being made to address this, but as you settle into your afternoon routines in the meantime, please be aware that the space works well when the traffic keeps moving (safely) and you have a clearly rehearsed plan with your child. Please do not leave your car unless it is parked in a designated spot, and please be mindful of pedestrians, car doors, rolling backpacks, etc. The safety of everyone in our community is extremely important to us! Additionally, please note the Natatorium (south) lot are also available for pick-up and drop-off. There are similar issues with flow and overall size, but it is sometime easier to wait there and not be in the direct line of traffic. Please DO NOT use the Visual Arts parking lot (north) for pickup or drop-off. There is poor flow in this lot, and the fence along the north side of the Visual Arts problems creates line-of-sight issues for cars entering from the interior campus road. We also receive regular deliveries to the dining hall from large trucks in the same space that we use to access the back door of the nurse s office, so we really need to keep this area free from extra traffic. 2 MULTICULTURAL PARENTS COUNCIL The Multicultural Parent Council (MPC) is inviting all new and returning families to the Welcome Gathering Potluck scheduled for Friday, September 15 th at 5-7:30 pm on the Music Building patio. Come meet other families and learn all about the Multicultural Parent Council groups! Any potluck dishes you wish to bring for this event are greatly appreciated, but not required. Sign up here: NATIVE AMERICAN PARENT COUNCIL The Albuquerque Academy Native American Parent Council (NAPC) would like to welcome and invite all new and returning students, family members and alumni to our first gathering of the new school year. We will be hosting a Picnic this Friday, August 25, 2017 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. on the Music Building east patio. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks will be provided. GrandDays are one of the highlights of fall at Albuquerque Academy. We enjoy hosting grandparents and grand friends during the school day, providing class visits and lunch, and sharing stories about the Academy experience. This year GrandDays arrive on Friday, October 6 for grades 6-7 and on Monday, October 9 for grades Please visit the GrandDays page on our website to learn more. An invitation with further details was mailed to grandparents a few weeks ago. Please check with them to be sure they received their information, and if they did not, please contact Joni Barabe at Also, we are asking for parents who would like to volunteer to help during GrandDays to contact Emily Collis at , the volunteer shifts are from 8:15-10 a.m. each morning. We look forward to seeing grandparents and grand guests this fall! 7th Grade Transportation Committee in Need of Volunteers Please consider volunteering this year for the 7th Grade Education Transportation Committee! We need parent drivers for several upcoming events, including the first Ex Ed trip for the year on September 5th - 9th, and science field trips to Tingley Beach on each of four days during the week of September 11th - 15th. DEAN S CORNER-Mr. Chris Kelly Hello and welcome to the school year! I m Chris Kelly, the 6/7 Dean of Students. Each week, I ll have this section in the bulletin for general news for both grades. 3 Without further ado the first installment: What Students Can Expect from Me My goal for all 6/7 students is for you to have the best year you ve ever had. I want to encourage you to always do your best and to think before you act or speak. You will know that I expect you to try and to fail and to pick yourself up and try again. I will encourage and support you in making great choices socially, emotionally, and academically. And when you make a mistake, my job will be to help you realize that a good student is compelled to evaluate what s happened so they can apply what they ve learned. You will be expected to live up to the standards we hold you accountable to as Academy students. At the same time, I want you to think of me as a resource someone you can come to should you have a need or a concern. I will be direct with you, always, but that directness will also come from a place of concern, of hope, and of optimism. Ultimately, you are our greatest assets, and you can expect me to treat you as such. HISTORY-Ms. Erin Fitz-Gerald In history class this week students began their study of New Mexico history. Our work started with a reading about the Pueblo Indians and their worship of the sun as a god. This reading complemented the eclipse viewing. On Tuesday we ventured out of the class room to write in our comp books about the New Mexico landscape, which is dominated by the sky. On Wednesday I appreciated the students diligence as I lectured and provided a good overview of New Mexico history. Hopefully students have discussed with you the New Mexico Quest assignment and you have begun making decisions about where to visit and when to go. Students can complete the Canvas quiz on the quest once you ve thought through your plans. The deadline for the quiz is Thursday, August 31, but it can be completed this weekend. Otherwise there is no homework. ENGLISH-Mr. Chris Kelly Here we go! We're off and running in Green Chile English. After a couple of introductory days, we've jumped into Lois Lowry's The Giver. Students created story boards for the entire novel, and we discussed the novel's plot structure. Next week, we'll dig into the book's powerful messages and themes, connecting to current events in our country. Students have a Cereal Box Project due on Wednesday, please don't let them wait until the day before. Also, on Monday, their first Weekly 300 is due. It's exciting to be back! ENGLISH-Ms. Elizabeth Payne With only a few days under our belts, we re already off to a great start! The students are busy digging into The Giver by Lois Lowry; we ve begun creating storyboards for the novel, and will begin discussing the novel s plot structure and various themes next week. Students have a Cereal Box Project due on Wednesday, August 30 th. This project should be done entirely at home we are not dedicating any class time to it. In addition, the students should be working on their first Weekly 300, which is due on Monday, August 28 th. All assignments, including details and due dates, are posted on Canvas.

4 ART-Ms. Liz Fritzsche The students have finished their Portfolio Cover designs using a negative space painting of a small section of one of their initials. On Monday they will begin drawing their hands under studio lights using cross contour lines to make the form pop off the page. Homework this week is to draw a " hand under the rug" in their sketchbook. I will assign the project on Monday and it is due Thursday. The assignments can be found on Canvas. Most homework takes about minutes. SCIENCE-Mr. Rich Anderson Due Monday, Aug 28th - Finish Title Page 1, Epigraph on Page 3 (in pencil is OK), and numbering all Science Journal pages in ink from Page 1 to the end of the book (Check Canvas for details). SPANISH-Mr. Jesus Nuñez Hola familias, this week was great!! We are having a good start of the year. We did part of a review "el verbo ser" and "articulos y sustantivos". Next week we are working with "adjetivos, verbos estar y tener" Also as a final activity for this part of the review we are going to complete a small class project. Please STUDY over the weekend. You can see your notes and power points posted on Canvas. Disfruten su fin de semana. MATH-Ms. Dana Pederson Welcome to 7 th grade Green Chile Math! We have one group of Algebra and three groups of Pre-Algebra. Both groups are getting accustomed to the procedures in our classroom and the correct format for homework. Please refer to the green Math Expectations sheet for the basics and me if you have questions. Pre-Algebra reviewed properties of integers this week and we will move to simplifying expressions next week. There will be a quiz on this material on Friday. Algebra talked about real numbers and using that knowledge when discussing ranges of numbers. We will do a review of operations with rational numbers next week. There will be a quiz on that material on Friday.

Results Posted Fri, 9/1 Rehearsals begin Tues., 9/5 Requirements for Consideration- 1. Prior musical experience -- either singing, playing an instrument, or both. 2. The abilities to learn music quickly, and to work diligently within a small ensemble. 3. The discipline to work on your music outside of rehearsal time when needed. *Audition procedure- 1. Sing vocal warm-ups as directed. 2. Have a prepared song to sing, either with or without accompaniment. Please select a simple folk song, patriotic song, art song, etc. (Note: Pop, hip hop, or country songs don t demonstrate the needed skills for this group.) 3. Sing back patterns of pitches after Mrs. Briggs plays them on the piano.
