1 Drawing ART 220 Fall 2017 Class time: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday pm Location: Room 128 Name of Faculty: Ralph Larmann Contact details: Office hours: tba Course Description Introduces and explores various drawing media with emphasis on perception and drawing techniques. Six hours studio. Fall. Credit Hour Policy Statement This class meets the federal credit hour policy of: Other academic activities e.g. 3 hours of studio, or laboratory, or similar activities each week for approximately 15 weeks for each hour of credit, or a total of hours for each credit CREDIT HOUR POLICY: This course meets the federal requirements of 30 in-class hours plus an expected 15 hours of out-of-class work per credit hour. General Education Objective This course meets the General Education requirements for:- None apply Learning Objectives Listed below are the Learning Objectives for the course: To develop a student's skills and knowledge of basic elements of art. This will be accomplished through introductions to and development of a variety of art techniques, studies in art history, and the development of the individual's ability to communicate effectively through the media.

2 Further Information about the Course RESPONSIBILITIES: All students are required to follow the following guidelines for full course credit. Attend all scheduled class meetings. Be prepared to work on class assignments. Work efficiently and attentively in class. Contribute to critiques & discussions. Complete all assignments. Meet all required work deadlines. Clean up work area before leaving. WORK CRITERIA: Each student must arrive prepared to work with appropriate materials for the assignment, project, exercise, critique, discussion, or demonstration for that particular class day. Unprepared students may receive an absence for the day. OUTSIDE OF CLASS: Students should expect to spend approximately 9 hours per week in and outside of class working on assignments. The studio classroom, will be open for student use at various times throughout the week. CRITIQUES: Attendance and active participation in critiques is critical to learning in the studio classroom. All students are expected to contribute verbally by commenting or questioning aspects of the work being critiqued. Attendance at critiques is mandatory. Any student who knows they will be absent from a critique must contact the instructor prior to the critique. COMPLETION OF ASSIGNMENTS: Late assignments will receive a one-letter grade reduction. Unfinished work will not be accepted. All course work is expected to be finished and submitted for credit by the stated deadline. SAFETY AND ETIQUETTE: Students are expected to follow safety instructions and conduct themselves in a way that is respectful to others. This includes disposing of materials properly, clean up of shared spaces, be careful of other students' work, respect the wishes of others regarding their work. Any student who does not follow standards of safety and etiquette will be asked to leave the studio and will receive an absence.

4 Teaching Methods RECOMMENDED TEXT(s): The Thames & Hudson Introduction to Art by DeWitte, Larmann, Shields Available for optional purchase on arrival at Harlaxton, price Reference copies will be available in the College Library The Art Studio Chalkboard (website) METHODS: Instruction will be through projects in and the expression of the visual image, required reading, discussion, critique, portfolio evaluation, slide lecture, and demonstrations. FORMAT: Studio with demonstration and lecture component Required Materials: A $100 lab fee has already been assessed, and is required for the course. It covers the cost of some materials that we will be using in class and items comparable to the following list of materials: CHARCOAL: Alphacolor CHAR-KOLE pkg of 12 ERASERS: one each-large white plastic eraser, large kneaded eraser DRAWING PAPER: 12"x 18" Strathmore Drawing pad, 50 sheet (70 lb) NEWSPRINT: 12"x 18" to 18"x 24" pad, any brand RECEPTACLES: 3 small plastic cups with lids for liquid media PENCILS: Ebony, 4B, 6B, HB DRAWING BOARD: 18"x 24" Masonite panel (a product called a field sketch board may be available and is recommended) CLIPS: 2 large Bulldog clips SKETCHBOOK: 9 x 12, sketch journal RULER: 18" ruler INK: 1 bottle drawing ink BRUSH: 1" bamboo brush MASKING TAPE: 1 roll 3/4" masking tape CONTÉ CRAYONS: sanguine, black, white Recommended Materials: These are things which can be very helpful: a backpack large enough for all drawing materials a lightweight portable easel a portable or camp stool additional color drawing materials (pastels, etc.) bottled water for drinking and clean up when working afield.

5 Schedule of Assignments Assessment and Grading Criteria GRADING: %... A, %... A-, %... B+, %... B, %... B-, %... C+, %... C, %... C-, 60-69%... D, any grade point percentage falling below 60%... F Attendance Policy Harlaxton College operates a mandatory attendance policy that is binding on all faculty and students. The number of unexcused absences that are allowed before incurring a penalty is related to the number of times a class meets during a week. This means that for courses which meet three times a week students are allowed a maximum of three unexcused absences during the semester without attracting penalty points, for courses meeting twice a week two such absences are permitted and for courses meeting just once a week a single absence is allowed. COURSE SPECIFIC ATTENDANCE: The strength of a group studio art course comes from the interaction of ideas and observation of others. In missing the class, a student undermines the effectiveness of the course and the educational experience of all. Each student is required to attend all scheduled class meetings. If a student misses more than three scheduled class meetings, the final grade will be reduced one letter grade. Students are responsible for the academic consequences of their failure to attend class. If any assessment (e.g. in-class test, exam, paper, presentation, etc.) is missed, there is no expectation or requirement that a faculty member will accept the work after it is due, provide an extension to a deadline, or offer an alternative assessment opportunity for a student with an unexcused absence. Drop/Add and Withdrawal Policy There is normally about a 10 day period at the beginning of semester when a student may drop and class and/or add a class. The deadline date is published in the Semester Guidance handbook. Drop/Add forms are available from the library and completed forms should be returned to the same place. Faculty signatures are required for all classes being added Students may withdraw from a class, with the exception of British Studies, for a longer period of time. Again the deadline date is published in the Semester Guidance handbook. Forms are available from the College Secretary, to whom completed forms should be returned. Forms must be signed by the faculty member of the class being withdrawn from and the Principal. All students must register for, and be continuously enrolled in, 12 credit hours of study to be eligible to study at Harlaxton and remain in the United Kingdom.

6 Disability Policy It is the policy of the University of Evansville (Harlaxton College) to make reasonable accommodations for students with properly documented disabilities.
