1 Rudgwick Primary School News Friday 3 rd March 2017 Week 8 Dear Families What a fantastic day we had yesterday! As always the costumes for World Book Day were spectacular! Here are a few pictures of our playground parade. Every class also had a different teacher come and read to them during the day, a great time was had by all.

2 Congratulations to Will G in Year 5 who came 23 rd in the Central Sussex Cross Country. This is a fantastic achievement. Well done. It looked like the parents who attended the Science Coffee Morning had a fun time this week too! For making real effort and showing excellent enthusiasm with reaching his targets and behaving very maturely in tricky social situations. For designing a stunning front cover for his favourite book. For being very whizzy at Maths and really challenging herself. For coming back this term with such enthusiasm and putting great effort into all her work. For putting 100% effort into all of her work so far this term. For writing an excellent reflection, which shows awareness of self-improvement. We have been learning Africa (Year R) In Africa class this week we have begun a new topic called 'Far, far away'. We read the story of the 'Three Little Pigs' and thought of a new ending. Some of us have created a story map and labelled it. As it was too wet and muddy for woodland learning this week we went onto the field and built our own houses made of twigs. We put a little pig in each one and pretended to be the wolf to see if we could blow the houses down. All of the children looked amazing for World Book Day- a big thank you to all parents and carers for providing the costumes!

On World Book Day we focused on the book The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. We explored rhyming words and tried to recite some of the poetry in the book. Afterwards, we acted out the story of the Gruffalo and created some Big Art using twigs, stones and leaves. In Maths, we revised partitioning, counting in tens and found one more and one less than a number. Our new study unit is called Out and About and so we will be going out and about! We hope to explore our local village on the following dates: Thursday 16 th and 30 th March (in the afternoons). Children will need their wellies on those days and also we will be seeking parent helpers (if you can volunteer, please inform the office staff). THANK YOU in advance! What a lovely first week back we have had. We have been enjoying Jack and The Beanstalk, our new topic. We read the book, wrote advice letters to Jack about whether or not to climb the beanstalk and also designed new front covers for the story. In maths we have been exploring problem solving and reasoning, tackling some tricky two step questions. This week we have been focusing on our times tables in Maths by multiplying a pancake recipe for all our family to share, trying to beat ourselves at speed recall games and practicing the written method. This was tricky but all the children gave it their best shot! We have been looking at Roman armour and invasions in our topic and designing front covers for mystery books for our World Book Day Challenges. In Literacy we have been practicing using and identifying different types of sentence and exploring how we can build on them to make them even better. Well done to everyone in Antarctica class for dressing up in fantastic and creative costumes for World Book Day. We all enjoyed the dressup parade, designing alternative front covers for our favourite books and being read to by a mystery reader! In Maths, we were revising the grid method. Our new class reader is The Prince, The Cook and The Cunning Thief. This is a mystery story set in Tudor times. We also practised volleyball in P.E. and learnt how to say capital cities in French. This week in North class we have started our new study unit on Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. We began our learning by thinking about all of the things that we already knew and the things that we wanted to find out. In RE, we used our ICT skills to present our learning about Odin; the Viking creator of the world. In history, we developed our understanding of chronology by ordering the events in British History on a timeline. We have started on the brilliant topic Evolution and the children have shown an immediate fascination with the subject. We have already begun designing an island which they will develop with awareness of geography and science into a fictional place using non-fiction structures. This has ignited the children s imaginations and I look forward to developing these ideas. We have also been making sense of measurement and the relationships between the different ways we measure.

4 Who is picking up your child? If it is not a child s main parent or carer collecting your child you MUST tell the person on the gate in the morning who is collecting. Teachers will not release pupils unless we have been given this information and a further phone call will need to be made in order to confirm arrangements. Parent s Consultation Evenings Thank you to all those who have booked appointments for next week (year 1 to 6). There are still some slots available if you have not yet made an appointment. If you really cannot make one of these evenings please speak with your child s class teacher to arrange a mutually convenient time to talk about your child s progress. On the evenings there will be two star and a wish sheets for parents to complete two things you are pleased with in their learning and one thing you would like them to continue working on. These are really helpful to have in the children s books and demonstrate how parents are involved in helping to set pupil targets. NB No Eco Club next week as Miss Clayton will be involved in parents evening. Message from the PTA A big thank you to those parents who helped at the KS2 cinema club last night; these events could not take place without your support. Don't forget to sign up to easy fundraising if you haven't already. Some of our online shoppers have now earned hundreds of pounds for the school - thank you! The school lottery also runs on a weekly basis if you'd like to have a chance to win cash prizes, as well as support the school. PE KITS There have been several PE lessons this week where 5-6 pupils in the class have not had the correct PE kit. This really cuts into the learning time for the whole class. WE DO NOT officially hold Spare kit that pupils can use. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit in school every day. Clubs Monday 6 March There will be no Eco Club as Miss Clayton will be doing Consultation Evening. Art Club will run as normal with Miss Bowers. KS2 Cookery Club starts on Monday 13 th March. Woodland Learning: Year 6 will be in the woods on Tuesday Next week (7 th March) Please ensure that they have warm waterproof clothes and wellingtons. Y4 Cornet Concert for Parents Year 4 pupils will give a cornet concert to parents at 9.00am on Friday 7 th April.
