2 Wednesday, October 31 st Dismissal 10:30 a.m. JK-8 Parent Teacher Conferences: Parent/teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, October 18 th. As was stated in our school calendar, students in grades 5-8 will not have school on that day while students in JK- grade 4 will report as usual. There will be no school for all students on Friday, October 19 th. For parents who are attending conferences during the day for students in grades 5-8, teachers will be in Upper Zepf Hall. We ask that you enter the hall on the back side of Common Street. Go up the ramp to the doors to the upper hall. All teachers will be in their classrooms in the afternoon and evening. Please enter the main school doors during this time. Please try to be prompt for your scheduled times. Teacher In-Service: In late August, our school and parish staff participated in ALICE training which focused on procedures in schools during active shooter situations. It was very worthwhile to go through this training and better adapt our procedures to keep the children safe in our school. The next phase of the training deals with assisting any wounded individuals if a shooting were ever to occur at school. The trainers emphasized that emergency personnel will not be allowed in the building until the shooter is apprehended. Therefore, the staff are the ones who need to be trained to help those who are wounded. On Wednesday, October 31 st, our teachers and staff will receive this training in the afternoon and will dismiss all students at 10:30 that morning. We have already moved hot lunch on that day to Tuesday. Also, Just Like Home will take their regularly scheduled students early that day. Walled Lake will also provide bus service at 10:30 for all students who normally ride the bus. We don t usually have ½ day dismissals, but we feel that this is a critical training that needs to be completed by our staff. We hope that the advance notice will assist you in helping us take this afternoon. Family Pumpkin Activity: Get the whole family involved and decorate a pumpkin to represent a character in a book! 1. You could use a real pumpkin or a foam one that you would find at a craft store. 2. Use any materials to decorate your pumpkin, such as paint, permanent markers, yarn, sequins, construction paper, hats, etc. 3. Please do NOT cut or carve the pumpkin in any way! 4. Write up a short description of the book character that you created. 5. Bring the pumpkin and description to school during the month of October. We would like to have them all on display by October 29th.

Color Day: Students will celebrate the upcoming Michigan/Michigan State football game with a dress down day on Tuesday, October 16 th. Wear your school colors proudly and join in the fun of the upcoming football game. PSA Update: Thank you to the many families who have already made a donation for the donation drive. Each Friday, a drawing will be held for prizes for those who have made a donation. Last week s winners were: Jonah Barcelon, Lily Tata and Sophia Konja, and Mia Virga. Congratulations to these students, and we look forward to hearing the winners of this week s prizes. The donation drive runs through October. Kroger Community Rewards: If you have not yet registered your Kroger card in their community rewards program, please do so. It is easy!!! Any rewards you earn go directly back to our school. Go to their website at and choose St. William School. Our school s ID number is NS244. This is a new number this year for our school, but if you had registered your card under the old number, you don t need to do anything to update it. If you have other relatives, neighbors or friends who are not supporting a school through this program, please ask them to register our school. This is an easy way that all of our families can support St. William Catholic School. Box Tops for Education: Did you know that Box Tops raised over $800 for our school last year? There are boxes for collection located in each classroom. Box Tops can be found on many of your favorite brands such as, General Mills, Kleenex, and Pillsbury. There is a lot to earn for clipping something off your cereal box! Again, ask your neighbors, family and friends to collect them too!!! Any Box Top questions can be directed to Monica Higgins.

4 Reconciliation Workshop: The first workshop for those children preparing to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation will be held on Saturday, October 13 th beginning at 10 a.m. in the Activity Center. All children and their parents should plan to attend the workshop. Rosary Invitation: Attached to the newsletter is an invitation for our families to join us for the Living Rosary. This is a beautiful prayer experience that we hope many of you will be able to be a part of. We thank Mrs. Diffenderfer and her classes for preparing this for us. The rosary will be Thursday, October 25 th beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Activity Center. MDA Muscle Walk: The Kiryakoza family and the Zetouna family are participating in the MDA Muscle Walk on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at Belle Isle at 11AM. Both of our families have family members who are affected with Muscular Dystrophy. If members of the St. William community are interested in joining our teams or donating to the MDA, they can do so at one of the following links: Thanks, Steven Kiryakoza steven@kiryakoza.com A Greeting from the Pope: Steve and Renee Alexandrowski, whose daughter Lydia is in our 6 th grade, were visiting Rome this last week. They had the amazing experience of being able to have an audience with the pope. This photo is from just before shaking his hand, when he asked us to pray for me. Pope Francis had an excellent message today: God is life! What a blessing!

5 All Night Vigil: St. William Parish is having an all-night vigil for the crisis in the Church from 5: PM on Saturday, October 20, until 8:30 AM on Sunday, October 21st. If you are interested in signing up for the vigil, there will be posters in the tower of church. This is a great family experience to consider as well. As Father mentioned in his homily this week, we need to pray in many different ways to Our Father. This is certainly a great opportunity to pray and to listen to Him.
