This session will be of particular interest to smaller teams/schools and less experienced coaches. It's All in the Genes--District FPS Topic (also at 10:15 AM) Kirk Barnett, Russell High School Instructor/Academic Team Coach The recent developments of new biotechnology techniques such as Next-Gen Sequencing, Real Time PCR, cloning, Knock out genes, and CRISPR/Cas9 have revolutionized molecular genetics and genetic engineering. Genetic manipulation has arrived in the Twenty-first century and with it comes almost endless ethical and safety questions. We embark on a new day of genetic manipulation that is cheap, fast, and easy to perform. Already we are seeing cloned animals that provide high quality meat and milk, transgenic animals that possess genes taken from completely different species, GMO crops that possess pesticide resistance, and gene therapy drugs for humans. All of this has happened in the past decade. Join Kirk Barnett as he uses his expertise as a former DNA specialist for the National Institutes of Health and current FPS coach to discuss what we might expect out of genetic manipulation in the next decade. FPS: Beyond the Team Events Wilkinson Room,1st floor Melissa Bryan, McCracken County Public Schools FPS is most commonly known for it's team division that competes as part of Governor's Cup, but the program has many more opportunities for students at the State and International level! Scenario Writing, Scenario Performance, Community Problem Solving, Individual, and Junior Division components are all great opportunities for students to be involved in the FPS program outside of Governor's Cup. In this session, we will discuss each FPS Component event and look at past examples of each. You will receive tips to expand your FPS program and provide a more opportunities for competition. All journeys are launched with a skill-set acquired by their commander from the first flight. Whether you are directing the crew to read the Future Scene for critical information or attempting to write a Future Scene, you need to be on this voyage.
