This fun filled night will be a terrific opportunity to both meet other parents and also to support the programs and events that your PTO sponsors throughout the school year. 3 Page 3 Carmel Education Foundation 25th Annual Telethon F A C T S H E E T February 15-17, 2011 Telethon Broadcast: February 17, 6:00-9:00 P.M. CHTV- Channel 99 The Carmel Education Foundation (CEF) will host its 25th Annual Telethon to raise funds for education grants that are awarded to teachers throughout the Carmel Clay Schools. The CEF Telethon is a collaborative effort of CEF, Carmel Clay educators, and students. Students and other volunteers will man a phone bank during the day and evening from February 15 through February 17. The final night (Feb. 17) of the Telethon will be broadcast live on CHTV Channel 99 from 6:00-9:00 P.M. and feature a showcase of elementary and middle school choirs and music ensembles performing in the Dale E. Graham Auditorium at Carmel High School. Guest appearances include CCS Superintendent Dr. Jeff Swensson, CCS teachers and students, and local business and civic leaders. Donations to the Telethon help CEF to provide education grants for teachers. These grants help teachers to develop new curriculum, access new technology, and provide other value-added educational opportunities for Carmel Clay students. Some examples of CEF Education Grants are: Lyrical Language of Literacy grant allowed the 11 CCS elementary music teachers to develop new curriculum and lesson plans that integrated music and literature from around the world for all CCS elementary students (K-grade 2). Carmel Elementary School ALL-STAR After School Club grant supported an after-school tutoring program for students in grades 2-5 who are not meeting grade-level standards. Algebra Success For All was a professional development grant for all CCS middle school math teachers and CHS algebra teachers. The grant provided advanced training and resources to help CCS teachers increase achievement in science and math by 1,500 middle and high school students. TechHOUNDS, the CHS extra-curricular club, received CCEF s first annual Dr. Barbara Underwood grant to support the FIRST Robotics Team in regional and international competitions. Colonial Gardens, a project at Woodbrook Elementary School, combines study of history and science with a hands-on experience to re-create a garden of colonial-era plants and herbs. PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED FOR 1 ST PLACE AND MOST WOODBROOK SPIRIT RACE IS HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE WOODBROOK WELLNESS FAIR AND BLOOD DRIVE

Carrie Oblazney Reminder for Grades 3-5 ISTEP Testing February 28-March 9 Please try to avoid scheduling any doctor s appointments during these days and help to ensure that your student is on time and present during all testing days. Woodbrook Elementary is honored to welcome Josh Bleill to our school on Monday, February 14. Josh is a U.S. Marine Corporal who lost both of his legs and is now an inspirational speaker. Through one of our parents, Lt. Colonel Spencer, we are able to bring this amazing individual to Woodbrook to speak to our students. Josh will speak at 8:30 to grades K-2 and at 9:30 to grades 3-5. Parents are welcome to attend. Hear Ye, Hear ye.. Colonial Days has been rescheduled to Friday, March 18 Last week s winter storm forced us to cancel the 5th Grade Colonial Days program. We will participate in the Colonial Day program next month. Thank you to our volunteers for making time for this event. There are various positions available and we hope that you will consider one of them. Becoming a Director is a great way to become involved in your child s education and meet new people too! It is extremely rewarding experience for both you and your child. All Board positions and descriptions can be found on our PTO website www1.ccs.k12.in.us/ wbe/pto. They are listed under Committees under the Leadership tab on the left side menu. If you are interested, please volunteer or recommend another Woodbrook parent you might even consider teaming up with a friend. Please take a moment and thank our school counselor, Mrs. Lee Ann Wishmeyer for all that she does to support our students and their families. PTO Budget The budget committee will be meeting at the end of this month to plan the PTO budget. Anyone with comments, suggestions, or questions should contact Patti Hurdle, PTO Treasurer at thehurdles@sbcglobal.net. The School district has changed the school calendar to add the two days we lost last week due to the winter weather. School will be in session Monday May 2, and Thursday May 26. The next District Board Meeting is on Monday February 28 at 7:00pm at the Carmel Clay Educational Services Center 5201 E. Main Street For Your Information... Our Indiana General Assembly is in the process of reviewing several bills relating to Education Reform. These bills can become laws which will directly impact your child's education and our school district. These bills include but are not limited to the following: SB575, HB1002, SB0001, SB1195,SB0410 and SB1307 Get informed!
