6 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This year marks the 29 th edition of the report on the First Destinations survey of University of Limerick graduates. Since 1982, this survey has been conducted every year by the Cooperative Education & Careers Division as part of a nation-wide survey, on behalf of the Higher Education Authority. Over this period the survey has provided insight into the position of UL graduates nine months after graduation, providing accurate and comprehensive information on employment rates along with levels of participation in further study and training. It also provides details of the employment sectors, regions of employment, and salary levels. This exercise has generated valuable data on graduate employment trends over a long period of varying levels of economic and social development. This information is of benefit to students, university management, employers, policy makers and all with an interest in higher education. The survey of the graduates of 2009 was conducted in April 2010 and the results reflect the employment and further study pattern of 80% of the 2,500 graduates who completed full -time programmes of study in UL during The survey covers all award levels, up to and including PhDs. After many years of buoyant economic growth and an abundance of job opportunities, graduates are now experiencing difficulties in finding work in a very competitive employment market. Few had anticipated the depth and extent of the recession which is affecting all sectors of the Irish economy. The impact on graduate employment has been serious and this is evident in the figures released by the Higher Education Authority which show that only 45% of all Irish graduates (Level 8) who completed degrees in 2009 are employed. By comparison, UL graduates have performed quite well, recording an employment rate of 53% which is 8% above the national average. This reflects the distinctive advantage that UL graduates have because of their work experience which makes them more employable than graduates who have not had this opportunity. As a result, the employment rate of UL graduates has always been significantly higher than the national average and this year is no exception. It is not possible to make any comparisons for other levels of awards as the HEA has not yet released those employment statistics. The key features of the survey findings for the different award levels are as follows : Primary Degrees 53% of graduates went directly into employment, 41% in Ireland and 12% overseas. This drop in employment levels reflects the ongoing downturn in the economy which has affected the graduates of Despite this, the employment record of UL graduates is 8% higher than the national average. The increase in graduate emigration, from 4% to 12%, is not surprising and it demonstrates that UL graduates are prepared to travel in order to secure employment. There was a significant increase in the number of graduates opting for further study or research, from 24% to 32%. This is in line with the national trend and is seen as an effective way of responding to limited employment opportunities. There was a 1% decrease to 4% in the percentage who were 'not available' for employment or further study. As anticipated, these results record an increase in the number of graduates seeking employment which is now 11%, an increase of 1% from last year. This is lower than the official labour market unemployment figure which is currently in excess of 13.7%. The average starting salary is 24,500 with more than 24% of respondents earning salaries in excess of 29,000. The drop in graduate salaries reflects the national trend as many organisations have implemented salary cuts. First Destinations Report, UL Graduates

7 The public sector accounts for the highest concentration of graduate jobs, particularly Education at 30% up 6% on last year, and Health at 13% down 2% on last year. Although the Business, Finance and Insurance sectors have lost their prominent position, it is notable that between them they still account for the second highest proportion of graduate jobs, 24%. The most popular region of employment is the Mid-West which accounts for 35% of jobs, followed by the Dublin, at 29%. The most popular overseas location is the UK at 40%, followed by the Middle East at 28%. Education graduates maintained their strong employment record with 79% going directly into employment, including 17% overseas. This is the highest emigration level recorded for Education graduates to date and it reflects both the shortage of teaching jobs in Ireland and the good reputation of UL Education graduates overseas. Higher Degrees Overall, the proportion of higher degree graduates in employment remained robust which is very encouraging considering the increase in the numbers choosing this option in the hope of improving their employment prospects. The employment level of those who completed Postgraduate Diplomas in 2009 maintained its strong record, as reflected in the employment rate of 79%. This was an excellent performance, given the state of the economy. Only 8% of this cohort emigrated to find work. A total of 530 graduates completed Masters Degrees in 2009 and 64% went directly into employment, 13% of these overseas. Some 14% continued with their studies primarily to PhD level. PhD graduates also scored highly in the employment market, recording an employment rate of 85%. As is typical for this group, the highest concentrations are employed in the higher education sector, in research or teaching positions. Salary levels increase in accordance with level of qualification and, for those with postgraduate qualifications, average salaries range from 31,500 to 46,500, depending on type of qualification, sector of employment and nature of job. While graduate employment contracted by 21%, from 74% in 2007 to 53% in 2009, those entering into further study increased by 14%, from 18% to 32%. This increase in further study counterbalances the contracted employment rate and the level of graduate unemployment is still significantly lower than the national unemployment rate which is currently in excess of 13.7%. The highest employment rate is recorded by graduates in Education & Health Sciences who have completed professional programmes which are traditionally associated with high employment. There was a drop in the number of graduates in these disciplines employed in Ireland because of recruitment embargos in the public sector. However, they had little difficulty finding work overseas, particularly in the UK, where Irish qualified nurses and teachers are held in high regard. The employment rate of Business graduates fell by almost 20%, from 71% to 52%, reflecting the crisis in the financial services sector. Graduates responded by opting for postgraduate study which shows an increase of 13% to its current rate of 29%. Graduates in the Arts, Humanities & Social Science disciplines have always shown a strong interest in postgraduate study and this is clearly reflected in the most recent statistics which show the number of graduates in further study outweigh those in employment by 13%. This is also a characteristic of Engineering & Science graduates who recorded the second highest percentage in further study as many are attracted by the opportunities to engage in research activities funded by the state. 8 First Destinations Report, UL Graduates 2009

The higher the qualification award, the more likely graduates are to enter the labour market and the less likely they are to continue to further study. The high employment rate of those completing Postgraduate Diplomas is not surprising as it reflects the targeted and vocational nature of those programmes. It is encouraging to note that the highest employment rate is for PhD graduates as this demonstrates that there is a demand for the specialist expertise and skills developed through their research studies. This group also shows the highest rate of graduates working overseas proving the international currency of UL PhDs. Female graduates outnumber male graduates by 52% to 48% and also show a higher employment rate of 60% to 54%. Conversely, there is a marginally higher percentage of males in all the other categories. This reflects national trends with female graduates generally showing higher employment and lower seeking employment rates. In the case of UL graduates, however, it should be noted that there is a significantly higher presence of female students in the Education & Health Sciences programmes, which also record the highest employment rates. Consequently, it is more likely that the degree discipline has a stronger influence on employment prospects than the gender of graduates. With respect to increasing levels of qualification the distribution trends of salaries is consistent wit h those reported by the Higher Education Authority, showing that graduates with higher qualifications generally command higher salaries. 50% of PhD graduates reported starting salaries in excess of 37,000 and, amongst this group, it is notable there were no instances of salaries lower than 25,000. This survey records only the starting salaries for graduates and cannot reflect any differences that might arise at a later stage in the graduates careers. There are significant differences in the average salaries commanded by particular cohorts of UL graduates which can be accounted for by degree discipline, level of award, type of employer or location of employer. 12 3 OVERVIEW OF SURVEY RESULTS: PRIMARY DEGREE GRADUATES 3.1 First Destinations of 2009 Graduates: All Faculties Current Situation Not available for employment 4% Seeking employment 11% In Employment Ireland 41% In Further Study or Training 32% In Employment Overseas 12% The total number of Primary Degree graduates in 2009 exceeded 1,600, of whom 84% are accounted for in the survey results. The pattern of first destinations for this cohort of graduates is as follows: For the second successive year, the survey results show a significant drop in the employment rate, from 61% to 53%. This is the lowest employment level recorded since the 1980 s and reflects the serious impact of the continuing economic difficulties on graduate employment. It is no surprise that the number of graduates employed overseas has increased from 4% to 12%, the highest level in almost 20 years. Once again, emigration acts as a safety valve fo r those graduates who are prepared to travel in order to secure employment. There was an increase in the number of graduates opting for further study or research, up 8% from last year to its current level of 32%. This is in line with the national trend and is seen as an effective way of responding to limited employment opportunities. It is still considerably lower than the national average of 43%, according to the HEA statistics. The percentage of graduates who were not available or employment or further s tudy dropped by 1% from last year. There was an increase of 1% in the number of graduates seeking employment which is now 11%. This is lower than the official labour market unemployment level which is currently at 13.7%. Only the larger sectors are highlighted in this commentary. The overall trends for all Primary degree graduates are as follows : One of the most significant changes in employment trends is evident in this table which marks the dominance of the public sector, now accounting for the highest concentration of jobs. Foremost is the Education sector at 30%, up 6% on last year. The Health sector was also an important employer at 13% although this was 2% lower than last year. It is worth noting that one of the highest employment rates was recorded by Physiotherapy graduates, with 81% employed in relevant roles across the Health sector. Although the Business, Finance and Insurance sectors have lost their prominent position, it is notable that they still account for the second highest proportion of graduates at 24%. A further analysis of this group shows that approximately 52% are employed in accountancy and legal services and 35% are employed in banking, finance and insurance with the remainder employed in other related sectors. The Manufacturing sector remains consistent with the previous year, accounting for only 13% of jobs. This reflects the low output of Engineering and Science graduates as fewer second level students study higher level mathematics and science subjects. The survey included an optional question on the size of the company. Almost half of the graduates employed in Ireland responded to this question and it is interesting to note that some 67% of respondents are working in small and medium -sized companies, i.e. those employing fewer than 250 people. This provides evidence that graduates are now playing their part in the SME sector which is crucial to the future success of the economy. 12 First Destinations Report, UL Graduates 2009

Not all respondents provide salary details. This chart relates to 63% of graduates who declared their salary levels. For the second successive year, the survey shows a drop in the average starting salary in line with national trends, down 7% on the previous year. The average starting salary for UL graduates in 2009 was 24,500, considerably lower than the average salary of 28,000 which was recorded two years ago. 38% of respondents reported salaries in excess of 25,000, and 24% earned in excess of 29,000. Almost one in five graduates reported salaries of less than 16,999 and this probably reflects the impact of the unpaid or lowly paid graduate internship programmes introduced by the government as a job creation measure. There is some evidence of a gender difference in average starting salaries in the past year, as the average salary for male graduates was 24,900 by comparison with 23,800 for female graduates. This is in contrast to last year s results which reflected no significant differences on gender grounds. On the whole, salary levels are more likely to be influenced by factors such as degree discipline, type of job, sector of employment or location of employment. In second place is the Dublin region which accounts for 29%, and the other regions are significantly behind. As noted earlier in this report, emigration has increased significantly this year with 12% of primary degree graduates working overseas. The survey results also show a change in the location of overseas jobs, with the UK featuring as the preferred location, accounting for 40% of jobs. This can be attributed to the number of teachers and nurses finding work in t he UK as Irish qualifications are highly regarded in these sectors. The second most popular overseas location is the Middle East which accounts for 28% of jobs, primarily one large network of international schools in the United Arab Emirates which has been one of the largest employers of UL graduates in recent years. The next most popular location is the EU (excluding the UK) accounting for 11% of primary degree graduates, which means that more than 50% of those working abroad have stayed within the EU. 14 First Destinations Report, UL Graduates 2009
