5 M-F ATHLETIC CO. AMFLEX DRIVE CRANSTON, RI 090 Dear Fellow Cross Country Fans, It is indeed an honor for M-F Athletic to again be a sponsor of the NJSIAA Cross Country Championships. Most of us will only get to see the start and finish of these races today, but make no mistake; there is a lot that happens in between. Just as in life, these athletes are learning that it is the journey along the way that matters most. The hard work and perseverance that it takes to be successful here will go a long way towards preparing them for many future challenges. To the athletes and coaches good luck and continued success in pursuing all of your goals. To the parents and fans cheer the runners on with pride and the knowledge that they are giving it their best. To the officials, volunteers and park personnel thank you for providing a safe, fair and enjoyable experience for the athletes and spectators alike. To the winners congratulations! You have achieved the highest level of success against some of the best competition in the country and have earned a place in New Jersey sports history. Since 90 M-F has been involved in the sports of track & field and cross country as an equipment supplier and a supporter through our many educational programs. The journey continues for us as well. Enjoy the meet! Sincerely, Jim Grogan Mid Atlantic Sales jim.grogan@mfathletic.com

6 Mission Statement The NJSIAA, a private, voluntary Association serves its student-athletes, members schools and related professional organizations by the administration of education-based interscholastic athletics, which support academic achievement, good citizenship and fair and equitable opportunities. We believe that member schools, along with their leagues and conferences, share these convictions: A safe and healthy playing environment is essential to our mission. Participation in interscholastic athletics enhances the educational experience of all students. Interscholastic athletics is a privilege. Excellence in both academics and athletics is pursued by all. Interscholastic participation develops good citizenship and healthy lifestyles, fosters involvement of a diverse population and promotes positive school/community relations. Rules promote fair play and minimizes risks. Cooperation among members advances their individual and collective well-being. Training of administrators and coaches promotes the educational mission of the interscholastic experiences. Properly trained official/judges enhances interscholastic competition. The NJSIAA is the recognized state authority on interscholastic athletic programs. The NJSIAA is composed of member high schools. It provides more than,000 student-athletes opportunities to participate in nearly,000 games, workshops, clinics and other NJSIAA-sponsored activities within a given year. The NJSIAA offers more championships for its student-athletes than any other state in the nation: For Boys: Cross-Country, Football, Soccer, Basketball, Bowling, Fencing, Ice Hockey, Swimming, Diving, Indoor Track Relay Championships, Indoor Track Individual Championships, Wrestling, Baseball, Golf, Lacrosse, Outdoor Track Championships, Tennis, and Volleyball. For Girls: Cross-Country, Field Hockey, Gymnastics, Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Bowling, Fencing, Swimming, Diving, Indoor Track Relay Championships, Indoor Track Individual Championships, Golf, Lacrosse, Softball, and Outdoor Track Championships. 18 Meet of Champions Preview By Jim Lambert Welcome to the th boys and th girls NJSIAA Star-Ledger/M-F Athletic Meet of Champions, which promises to be one of the best in meet history. There are some meet records that will be in jeopardy, the McLaughlin siblings, Taylor and Sydney, have a good chance of adding their names to a very short list of brother-sister combinations to win titles, and the deepest girls shot put field in meet history will clash here at the Bennett Center in Toms River. Here is a look at what to expect in each event. -METER DASH Yale-bound Kyle Ellerson of Bergen Catholic, and Jamique Mitchell of Newark Central are the co-favorites based on the state leading time of. that they share. Mitchell won the state Group title in., and Ellerson won Non-Public A in.8. But look out for Caleb Williams of St. Joseph (Hamm.), who ran the top time of anyone at the Group Champions with a. to win the Non-Public B title, Pennsauken sophomore Martin Booker Jr., the Group winner in.9, and Group champ Akeem Lindo of East Orange (.). Lindo is just a freshman. 00-METER DASH Sterling Pierece of Rancocas Valley (.0), Qwashon Powell of Paterson Kennedy (.), and Kyle Ellerson of Bergen Catholic and Jamique Mitchell of Newark Central (.) are the next fastest in this showcase event. 00-METER RUN Taylor McLaughlin of Union Catholic, the defending champion, is the big favorite to make it two in a row, and he could take down the meet record. The Michigan-bound McLaughlin won the Non-Public A title in 8., the fastest time in Group history (all groups combined). McLaughlin will be chasing the meet record of 8. set in 0 by Zyaire Clemes of Trenton, which is also the Bennett Center facility record. McLaughlin's biggest challengers should be Group winner Deshawne Bunion (9.0), Group champ Norman Morris of Penns Grove, Group runner-up Ray Clarke of Roselle, and Group BOYS winner Nasir Haines of Freehold Township. If McLaughlin wins and his sister, Sydney (favored to win the girls 0 and hurdles), wins they would become the fourth brother-sister duo to win indoor M of C titles in the same year. 800-METER RUN This race is up for grabs between lots of runners. Isaiah Curbelo of Rancocas Valley is the top seed based on the :.8 he ran to win the Group race out of the unseeded section. But Notre Dame teammates Franklin Aririguzoh, the state leader at :., and Matt Kamph, No. in the state at :.0, and Group winner Marc Rienas of Old Tappan (:.), are all capable of winning. Kamph showed great wheels when he came from way back to catch Aririguzoh to win the Non--Public A title by.0. Rienas, who also qualified in the,00 and may run that instead, probably has the best kick in the race. If he's close in the last 00, look out!,00-meter RUN This should produce a : or possibly a faster time with Luke Petela, who was unpushed when he ran a Group record :.9, No. in the state this season, state leader Joe Dragon of High Point (:.8 in the mile), Group winner Leland Jones of Summit (:8.88), Group champ Ryan Rafferty of Jackson (:9.), and possibly Marc Rienas of Old Tappan in this. Rienas, who won the Group race in :9.9, may opt for the 800 instead. Also look out for Justin Branco of Delsea and Colin Daly of River Dell, who have both gone under :0 this season.,00-meter RUN CBA junior Blaise Ferro, who won this race last year and at the M of C last spring, likes to sit and then explode over the final 00. Someone will probably have to get away from Ferro's kick to have any shot of knocking off the champ. But Ferro is incredibly fit and will be very difficult to shake. Ferro won the Non-Public A race in 9:., with Patrick Sullivan of Don Bosco nd in 9:.. Sullivan is the state leader at 9:.. Among those seeking t score the upset are Group champion Nikhil Pulimood of West Windsor South (9:9.), Group runner-up Sam Layding of North Hunterdon (9:0.), Group winner Craig Corti of Wallkill Valley (9:.), and Conor Murphy of Allentown, the Group winner in 9:.. -METER HURDLES Before last week there was no clear favorite in this event, by Highland's Chais Hill changed that with a red-hot. in Group to break the meet record (all Groups combined). Hill's time is No. in the state this season. Hill was 8th last year, and nd at the M of C in the 0 hurdles last spring. The next fastest hurdlers in the race are Group champion Alex Borzelin of Hamilton North (.), Nate Bowie of Matawan (.), Group winner Cory Poole of East Orange (.), and Josh Taylor of St. John Vianney, the Non-Public A champ in.. HIGH JUMP Devin Bradham of Williamstown, who is headed to Penn State, is the one to beat after he made a

19 meet-record tying -0 to win the Group title. Group winner Ameer Banks of Delsea, Group winner Tariq Adams of Pleasantville, and Larry Russell of Timber Creek are all at -8. POLE VAULT State leader Sam Siegel of Demarest (-9) no-heighted at the sectional meet, so that leaves the door open for Group winer Matt Isaacson of Matawan (-) to win. But there are some -0 guys also capable of winning, like Caleb Duffany of Demarest, Travis Fisher of North Arlington, the. -METER DASH Haisha Bisiolu of Union, who won this title in 0 and ' and was second last year, is favored to become just the second girl to win three M of C dash titles. Only Takara Wilks, who won in 000 at Lincoln and '0 and '0 at Queen of Peace, has won the dash times. Bisiolu won her fourth straight Group dash title last week in.9, running a NJ #. in the trials. Group winner Kiara Lester of Deptford (.), and Domonique Panton of Freehold Township (.8) are the next fastest sprinters in the race. 00-METER RUN Super sophomore Sydney McLaughlin of Union Catholic, arguably the top high school female track and field athlete in the nation, is favored to win become the first person (boy or girl) in meet history to win both the 00 and hurdles, and just the second person (boy or girl) to ever win three golds at the same M of C. McLaughlin's x00 team is also favored to win. McLaughlin ran a Non-Public A record. last week, and is No. in the nation this season at.. Group winner Haisha Bisiolu of Union is the next fastest at., but she may just run the dash. Also keep an eye on Group winner Kiara Lester of Deptford (.), Group runner-up Group winner, and Andrew Accardi of Pompton Lakes. SHOT PUT No one has hit 0 feet in the state this season, but maybe the first to hit that number wins as lots of guys are close to it. The state leader is Non-Public B winner Luke Grodeska of St. Rose (9-), but Non-Public A champ Sean Brennan of Union Catholic is right there with a 9- /. Next is Andrew Liskowitz of CBA (8- /), followed by Group winner Francis Ahearn of Ramsey (8- /), Group champ Vlad Castillo of Montgomery (- /), GIRLS Samantha Anderson (.), Group winner Thaila Cooper of Kingsway and Group runner-up Carly Pettipaw of Lenape, who have each run METER RUN Catherine Pagano of Northern Highlands comes into this race as a big favorite to win her first M of C title. The Stanford-bound Pagano is No. in the nation in the four-lapper with a :09.80, and is coming off a :.9 win in Group, the fastest time in meet history (All Groups combined). Pagano, who followed up her Group 800 win by winning the mile the following day at the Millrose Games (:0.), could make a run at the meet record of :0. set in 009 by the legendary Ajee' Wilson of Neptune. There aren't any runners in the state close to Pagano on the clock. The next fastest 800 runners in the race are Group winner Samantha Anderson of Matawan (:.), Group champ Liz Chartier of Southern (:.), Kathleen Jaeger of Hunterdon Central (:.), Gabbi Kirsch of Williamstown (:.0), Lindsey Kane of Washington (:. ), Deirdre Casey of West Windsor South (:.), and Non-Public A champion Mary Kate McNamra of RBC (:.9). and Andrew Tummino of River Dell (-).,00-METER RELAY Union Catholic, the state leader at :0.9, is favored to win its third straight title with defending 00 winner Taylor McLaughlin on the anchor. Other teams under : are Group winner Old Bridge (:.0), CBA (:.0), Bergen Catholic (:.80). Group champion Old Tappan is at :.00, and Notre Dame (:.0), and Group runner-up East Orange (:.0) are next.,00-meter RUN Sophomore Briana Gess of Haddonfield, running indoor for the first time after giving up basketball, is the favorite to win her third M of C title. Gess, the 0 XC M of C winner and the,00 champ at the M of C last spring, ran a : split a couple weeks ago in the DMR. But Gess will have plenty of fast company, led by Group winner Christian Rancan of West Windsor South (:9.0), Group winner Marin Warner (:0.0), who beat Gess to win the Group XC title this past fall, and Group champ Olivia Viparina of Roxbury (:0.).,00-METER RUN This could be the best girls race of the meet with five sub minutes runners could toe the line. Hamilton North junior Grace Dwyer, who finished a very close second in the,00 at the M of C last spring, leads the way with a 0:0. that she ran to win the Group race. Group champion Carlen Jeffers of Ridgewood is next at 0:., followed by Devon Grisbaum of Ocean City, nd in Group in 0:.00, and Christina Rancan of West Windsor South (0:9.), and Eve Glasergreen of North Hunterdon (0:9.). Rancan also qualified in the 00, so she may opt for that race? But don't forget about Group champion Rachel Suss of Metuchen (:0.), and Group

20 winner Erin Mclaughlin (:0.0), who weren't pushed when they won their state titles, and are capable of running much faster. -METER HURDLES Sydney McLaughlin of Union Catholic, the U.S. leader in this event at.80, No. in state history, has a great shot at breaking the meet record of.8 set in 99 by Charmaine Walker of Plainfield. McLaughlin, who won the Non-Public A title in a meet record.8, is also chasing the state record of. set by Walker in 99. The next fastest hurdlers in the race are Chibugo Ike of Linden (8.), Gabrielle Bennett of Winslow, the Group winner in 8., Group champ Kathryn Schoenauer of West Windsor South, and Group winner Ebony Forbes of River Dell (8.0). HIGH JUMP This should be a great duel between Winslow's Gabrielle Bennett, the Group winner, and Group champ Hannah Taylor of Montgomery, who have both made a state season best -8 this season. The UMass-bound Bennett has made -8 three times this season, and Taylor, a junior, has made -8 twice. POLE VAULT It could take -0 or bette to win this as state leader Kristina Langan of Wayne Hills (-), Katlyn Rymarzow of Pope John (- /), Samantha Anderson of Hunterdon Central (-), and a few others at - will battle over the bar. SHOT PUT This could be the best girls shot put competition in state history. It is the first time in state history that three throwers that have gone beyond feet in the same season will clash in the circle, and they are all underclassmen. Sophomore Alyssa Wilson of Donovan Catholic, the Non-Public A winner, is the state leader with a 8- /, No. in state history. Next is junior Jess Molina of Westwood at - /, and right behind her is junior Nickolette Dunbar of Whippany Park (- /). Dunbar threw -0 / last Sunday to break the Group meet record and defeat Molina.,00-METER RELAY Sydney McLaughlin is expected to anchor this race for Union Catholic, which is favored to win based in its state season leading :9.. If McLaughlin wins the 00, the hurdles, and UC wins this race, she would join the great Olivia Baker of Columbia as the only triple winner in meet history. Baker won the 00, 800, and ran on the winning x00 as a junior in 0. The next fastest teams are Columbia (:.), Group champion Lenape (:8.9), Winslow (:00.0), and Timber Creek (:0.), and South Brunswick (:0.8). Kingsway Regional and Northern Valley at Old Tappan shared Group Team honors
