2 At the October NDHSAA General Membership meeting, the following nominees were presented for the Board election to be administered by mail ballot in December. Nominated for the Class A at large position to replace Kim Knodle, Principal of Valley City High School are Superintendent Viola LaFontaine of Turtle Mountain Community High School (Belcourt), Superintendent Steve Swiontek of the Devils Lake Public Schools, Todd Olson, Athletic Director of the Grand Forks Public Schools and Mike Heilman, Principal of Bismarck Century High School. Nominated to replace Superintendent Brian Duchscherer of Carrington, representing the Class B Southeast, will be Superintendent Rick Jacobson of Wyndmere Public School and Superintendent Craig Johnson of Fairmount Public School. The Athletic Administrators nominees to run for the position presently held by Lorell Jungling, Activities Director for Mandan High School are Pete Moe, Activities Director of Washburn High School and Peggy Person, Athletic Director of the Lewis & Clark High Schools (Berthold and North Shore) and Berthold High School Principal. Biographies and pictures of the candidates are as follows: Class A at Large Position Nominees Superintendent Viola LaFontaine Turtle Mountain Community School Belcourt Viola LaFontaine was born and raised in Belcourt, North Dakota. She attended the University of Mary a n d r e c e i v e d her Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary English. She returned to Belcourt and worked as a substitute teacher for one year. She then returned to school and obtained her Master s Degree in elementary education with an emphasis in special education from the University of North Dakota. Viola worked at the Middle School for two years while working on her Master s Degree. She worked at the K-8 Ojibwa Indian School for 9 years as a teacher, as the Bilingual Director and eventually as the principal. In 1990, she returned to school to work on her doctorate in Educational Administration. She worked as the reading specialist for the Turtle Mountain Elementary school and then as the elementary assistant principal. In 1995 she was hired as the Belcourt School 2 December Bulletin 2007 NDHSAA Board Candidates Introduced District # 7 superintendent and continues to be in that position today. The Belcourt School District is a K-12 school system with an enrollment of 1600 students. Viola is a member of the NDCEL, NDASA, NDIEA and Northwest Leaders. She is presently the president for the North Dakota Indian Education Association. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the North Dakota LEAD Center and has served on the SALT committee for DPI. Viola has 4 children. Her oldest daughter is a nurse and is currently back in school at UND working on her master s degree. Her second daughter is a full time mom and lives in Grand Forks, ND. Her oldest son is a plumber in Grand Forks, ND and her youngest son is attending Turtle Mountain Community College in Belcourt. Viola has 4 grandchildren of which 2 attend school in Grand Forks. Superintendent Steve Swiontek Devils Lake Public Schools Steve Swiontek graduated from Mayville State University in 1979 and received his Master s Degree from Northern State University of Aberdeen, South Dakota in He is presently in the UND ABD doctorate program. In , S w i o n t e k taught science and coached basketball at Adams High School. From 1980 to 1985 he was a science teacher, track coach and assistant football coach at Kenmare. He was the principal and athletic director at Red Lake Falls, Minnesota in and accepted the position of principal at Devils Lake High School in He became the Superintendent of the Devils Lake Public School system in 2001, a position he currently holds. Steve is a member of the NDCEL, NDASA, AASA, Rotary, KC s, NDOA, on the NDASA Board and is presently President of the Lake Region Special Education Board Swiontek has been very involved in activities as a football official for 21 years, a basketball official for 11 years, and a Region 4 track starter for 15 years. He was honored in 2000 as the North Dakota Speech and Theatre Association s Administrator of the Year. Steve and Susan, a middle school English teacher, have two children: Connor is a freshman at DLHS, and Frank is in the U.S. Navy. Todd Olson, Grand Forks Public Schools Director of Athletics Todd Olson is a 1986 graduate of Cavalier High School. He graduated from Mayville State University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education. He received his Master of Education degree in Educational Administration from the University of North Dakota in Todd began his teaching career at Grand Forks Central High School in At Central High School, he taught mathematics and computer programming for fourteen years along with being the head boys basketball coach for twelve seasons and the assistant girls basketball coach for three seasons. Todd was named the Class A Boys Coach of the Year in 1995 and led his team to the Class A State Championship in During his coaching career, Olson served five years on the Board of Directors of the North Dakota High School Coaches Association, acting as the President during the school year. Todd also represented the NDHSCA on the NDHSAA Athletic Review Committee and served two terms on the Basketball Coaches Advisory Committee. In 2005, Todd accepted the position as the Director of Athletics for the Grand Forks Public Schools. In this position, he administers all 21 of the varsity sports sanctioned by the NDHSAA at both Central and Red River High Schools. Olson has managed 12 NDHSAA State Tournaments and 15 East Region/EDC tournaments. Currently, Todd is representing the East Region on the NDIAAA Board of Directors and the Athletic Review Committee, as well as serving on the NDHSAA Tournament Committee. In 2006, he was named the East Region Athletic Administrator of the Year. Todd earned his Certified Athletic Administrator certification from the NDIAAA in Todd and his wife, Beth, who teaches third grade at Ben Franklin Elementary, have a daughter, Katelyn, and a son, David, who are both students at South Middle School. Board Nominees Cont. on page 3 Attention 9-Man Football As per NDHSAA Board Action on October 17th, 2007, the 9-man regular season will end Thursday, October 16th, This is necessary as when ending on Friday there was only one working school day to prepare for the eight Tuesday play-off games.

3 Michael Heilman Century High School Principal Bismarck Michael (Mike) Heilman is a native of Knox, North Dakota and a 1978 graduate of Rugby High School. He graduated from North Dakota State University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education and received his Master s Degree from NDSU in H e i l m a n began teaching Agriculture Education at Minot High School in In 1983, he moved to Garrison where he taught and coached wrestling until becoming principal and activities director in He spent one year at Garrison State Bank as an investment representative before returning to the classroom in In July of 1997, he became principal at Dickinson High School and is in his fourth year as principal at Century High School in Bismarck. Heilman is a member of the NDCEL, NASSP and ASCD. He has served as President of the NDASSP and has been on the state NCA committee. He represented North Dakota on the NCA Regional Board of Trustees. He was named North Dakota Agriculture Teacher of the Year in 1991 and NDASSP Principal of the year in Mike and Shelly have two children, Shawn and Krista. Krista is a senior at the University of Minnesota, pursuing a degree in psychology. Shawn and his wife Kim and their daughter Maria live in Bismarck. Shawn is an electrical engineer with MDU and Kim teaches at St. Mary s High School and is the youth director at Cathedral Parish. Class B Southeast Position Nominees Superintendent Rick Jacobson Wyndmere Public School Rick Jacobson is a 1976 graduate of Devils Lake High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in business education and physical education from Moorhead State University in 1981 and a Master of Science degree in Educational 3 December Bulletin 2007 NDHSAA Board Candidates (continued) Administration from the University of North Dakota in In 1981, Rick began his teaching career at Beach High School. He taught and coached girls basketball and boys and girls track. He served as secondary school principal/activities director at Edmore from While in Edmore he coached boys basketball for two years and girls basketball for six years. In 1996, Rick became superintendent and business manager of the Wyndmere Public School. He has also served as head girls basketball for seven years. Jacobson has served as District 1 chairperson for the last nine years. He is a member of the North Dakota Association of School Administrators, NDCEL and the North Dakota Coaches Association. He is currently serving on the board of directors of the North Dakota Education Service Cooperative. Rick and his wife Deb, an elementary teacher in Wyndmere, have two grown children. Superintendent Craig Johnson Fairmount Public School Craig Johnson is a native of Rugby, North Dakota and a 1986 graduate of Rugby High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business s Administration from Minot State University in 1990 and worked in retail and insurance for 4 years. He then returned in 1994 to Minot State University to pursue his Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. He completed his elementary education degree in the spring of His first teaching job took place in Carson, North Dakota with additional stops in Bismarck and Ellendale. While teaching, Craig coached golf, girls and boys basketball and track and received the District 9 boys coach of the year award in Craig received his Master s Degree in Educational Administration from Northern State University. His administrative experience includes a year as elementary principal in Ashley, North Dakota and two years in Alaska at St. Michael and Seldovia. While in Alaska, he was a teacher, a school principal, and coached one year of boys basketball where he flew to all games and slept in the school while on the road. He has many interesting stories to share about these experiences. Johnson is currently the Superintendent/ Secondary Principal in Fairmount, North Dakota. He is currently in his third year at Fairmount. He serves on the South Valley board, the 21st Century After-School Program board; he is a member of NDASA, NDASSP, and the AASA. He is also the FCT Head Volleyball coach and received the District 1 Coach of the Year award for the 2007 season. Craig and his wife, Tamara, have a 17 year old son, Zach and a 10 year old daughter Zadie Jo. Craig has two passions besides his family: golf and Nebraska Cornhusker football. He has held season tickets for the past 3 years, attending 9 husker games in the fall of 2006 Athletic Administrator Position Nominees Pete Moe Washburn High School Activities Director Peter Moe is a native of Canyon, Minnesota, and a 1976 graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth. P e t e b e g a n his teaching career in Lancaster, Minnesota, teaching physical education and social studies. He also served as the school s head football and head boys basketball coach. In 1978 he accepted a teaching position with Washburn High School where he has remained ever since. In Washburn, Pete has taught physical education, social studies, and driver education. He has coached football in Washburn for the past thirty years, served as head track coach for four years, assistant track coach for five years, assistant boys basketball coach for seventeen years and head girls basketball coach for one season. He has been Washburn s activities director since Pete is a member of the National Athletic Administrators Association, the North Dakota High School Athletic Administrators Association, the National High School Athletic Coaches Association, the North Dakota High School Coaches Association, the American Football Coaches Association, and the North Dakota Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association. Pete has been named regional football Coach of the Year four times, and in 1999 was named the NDHSCA Class A Football Coach of the Year. He has served the high school coaches of North Dakota as a past member the NDHSAA football advisory committee. He served for five years as chairman of the Class A Football all- state selection committee. He has held that same position the last three years for the nine - man division. Currently, he is serving as a vice president of the NDHSCA. Pete passed the National Athletic Administrators Association s Certified Athletic Administrator s exam in He has been a member of the NDIAAA Board of Directors since 2001 and served as that organization s president in Board Nominees Cont. on page 4

4 NDHSAA Board Candidates (continued) During his tenure as athletic director, Pete has managed several district and regional tournaments for the NDHSAA. He has taught NIAAA leadership training courses and is a NFHS coaches education instructor. In 2004, Pete was presented with NIAAA State Award of Merit for North Dakota. He has been named District 10 AD of the year five times, Regional AD of the year four times and was selected North Dakota Class B AD of the year in This past spring Pete was selected as North Dakota s Driver Education Teacher of the Year by the NDTSEA. Pete and his wife Barb have two adult children, both living in Bismarck. Peggy Person Lewis and Clark (Berthold & North Shore) Athletic Director Peggy Person, a 1977 graduate of Glenburn High School, received her Business Administration degree from Valley City State College in After working for Service Oil, Inc. (Fargo) for two years, Person returned to VCSC where she completed coursework for her Business Education major and Physical Education minor. Peggy earned her Master s Degree in Educational Leadership from Doane College (Crete, Nebraska) in In 1985, Peggy began her teaching and coaching career in Bridgeport, Nebraska. She taught business, computer, and physical education classes as well as served as the school district s technology coordinator. During her 14 years in Bridgeport, Person s extracurricular assignments included coaching in the volleyball, basketball, and track programs. In 1999 she returned to North Dakota where she accepted the position of secondary principal and athletic director in Berthold, the title she currently holds. In addition, she is the Athletic Director for the consolidated Lewis & Clark School District. She continues in the coaching ranks at various times by assisting in the basketball, volleyball, and track programs. Person is an active member of the NDCEL, NDASSP, NDHSCA, and NIAAA. She is also a member of the NDIAAA, where she serves as Vice President. Peggy has served as District 12 chairperson and Western Dakota Football Conference chair. She has been selected District 12 Athletic Director of the year three times, Region 6 ADOTY three times, and in 2004 was selected by her peers as Class B State Athletic Director of the Year. From Peggy served on the NFHS Citizenship Committee where she represented Section V. Peggy is a member of the Berthold Volunteer Ambulance, Zion Lutheran Church, and is President of the Ward County Chapter of Thrivent for Lutherans. When not working, Peggy enjoys playing golf, reading, and spending time with her family. Centennial Quiz QUESTION: The Consolidated League merged with the High School League after what season? "We do not see things as they are; we see things as we are." -- Talmud The NDHSAA Centennial Story Editor s Note: This is a continuation of the Centennial Story published in October and November issues of the BULLETIN. Girls sports started to take a more prominent position with the NDHSAA in the mid 1960 s. Girls golf, tennis and track were sponsored by the NDHSAA beginning in the spring of 1966 and gymnastics was added in Girls basketball had a re-birth in the fall of 1973 when the NDHSAA sponsored combined district level competition. In the fall of 1974, girls swimming and diving was first sponsored and Class A and B basketball separated and there was a state tournament for each class. In the fall of 1979, Class A and B girls cross-country was first sponsored. In the winter of , Class A girls volleyball was sponsored at the regional level and extended to the state tournament level in Class B volleyball was added through the state level in The last two additions were girls soccer which was added in the spring of 1996 and girls hockey added in Some changes and additions were also made in boys sports in the last 40 years, including the Class A football play-off plan that began in the fall of Boys soccer was first sponsored in the fall of 1995 and sand greens golf was discontinued in The present four division football play-off series began in the fall of 1997 and Class A baseball was first sponsored in the spring of Some historic changes which placed North Dakota on the cutting edge nationally included the three point line for boys basketball, adopted in and for girls in the fall of Class A boys basketball coaches tried the shot clock in and adopted its use in Then in the came the change that reverberated through the state and was motivated by a nationwide evolution: the switch of girls volleyball to the fall and girls basketball to the winter. It is also interesting to compare Association budgets from the early years to the present. In the first 3 years of the North Dakota High School League, the budget ranged from $30 to $45. Kids learn the basics of sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and their coaches. Kids who see adults behaving in a sportsmanlike way gradually come to understand the real winners in sports are those who know how to persevere and to behave with dignity - whether they win or lose a game. Parents can help their kids understand good sportsmanship includes both small gestures and heroic efforts. It starts with something as simple as shaking hands with opponents before a game and includes acknowledging good plays made by others and accepting bad calls gracefully. Displaying good sportsmanship isn't always easy. It can be tough to congratulate the opposing team after losing a close or important game, but the kids who learn how to do it will benefit in many ways. A child who bullies or taunts others on the playing field isn't likely to change the behavior when in the classroom or in social situations. In the same way, a child who practices good sportsmanship is likely to carry the respect and appreciation of other people into every other aspect of life. Good Sports Are Winners Ask a first or second grader who won a game, and that child may answer, "I think it was a tie." It's likely the question isn't of any real interest at that stage. Kids may be more eager to talk about the hits they got or the catches they almost made. But as they move into older and more competitive leagues, kids become more focused on winning. They often forget to have fun. Without constant reminders and good examples, they may also forget what behavior is appropriate before, during, and after a sporting event. If a child has a coach who cares only about being in first place and says that anything goes as long as they win, that child picks up the message it's OK to be ruthless on the field. If parents are constantly pressuring them to play better or second-guessing every move they've made, children get the message they're only as good as their last good play - and they'll try any method of achieving one. Adults who emphasize good sportsmanship, however, see winning as just one of several goals they'd like their kids to achieve. They help young athletes take pride in their accomplishments and in their improving skills, so the kids see themselves as winners, even if the scoreboard doesn't show the numbers going in their favor. The best coaches - and parents - encourage their kids to play fair, to have fun, and to concentrate on helping the team while polishing their own skills. Fostering Good Sportsmanship Remember the saying, "Actions speak louder than words"? That's especially true when it comes to teaching your kids the basics of good sportsmanship. Your behavior during practices 5 December Bulletin 2007 and games will influence them more than any What Is Good Sportsmanship? pep talk or lecture you give them. Here are some suggestions on how to build sportsmanship in your child: Unless you're coaching your child's team, you need to remember you're the parent. Shout words of encouragement, not directions, from the sidelines (there is a difference!). If you are your kid's coach, don't expect too much out of your own child. Don't be harder on him or her than on anyone else on the team, but don't play favorites either. Keep your comments positive. Don't badmouth coaches, players, or game officials. If you have a serious concern about the way that games or practices are being conducted, or if you're upset about other parents' behavior, discuss it privately with your child's coach or with a league official. When you're talking to your child after a competition, it's important not to dwell on who won or lost. Instead, you might ask your child, "How did you feel you did during the game?" If your child mentions he or she didn't do well at a particular skill, like throwing or catching, offer to work on these skills with your child before the next game. Applaud good plays no matter who makes them. Set a good example with your courteous behavior toward the parents of kids on the other team. Congratulate them when their kids win. Remember it's your child, not you, who is playing. Don't push your child into a sport because it's what you enjoyed. As your child gets older, let your child choose the sport he or she wants to play, and let him or her decide the level of commitment he or she wants to make to it. Keep your perspective. It's just a game. Even if your child's team loses every game of the season it's unlikely to ruin his or her life or chances of success. Look for examples of good sportsmanship in professional athletes and point them out to your kid. Talk about the bad examples, too, and why they upset you. Finally, don't forget to have fun. Even if your child isn't the star, enjoy the game while you're thinking of all the benefits your child is gaining - new skills, new friends, and attitudes that can help him or her all through life. 6 Ticket Policy for School Orders of State B Basketball The following policies have been adopted relative to the four tickets allotted each school in connection with the 2008 State Class B Boys' and Girls Basketball Tournaments to be held in late February and March. All ticket purchases are non-refundable. NOTE: School orders per tournament must be sent to the addresses listed below prior to the time tickets go on sale to the general public. Information will be online at and in the January BULLETIN concerning ticket sales for the general public. State Class B Girls Basketball Tournament at the Minot SU Dome on February 28, 29, & March 1. Four reserved seat tickets for will be available for purchase by each Class B high school. There is a limit of one set of tickets per co-op or consolidation per tournament. Orders for these four tickets must be postmarked before January 4, Send orders with a check made payable to the State Girls BB Tournament to: Rick Hedberg, Athletic Director Minot State University 500 University Avenue West Minot, ND Adult Reserved tickets: $38.00 plus $3 venue charge for a $41 total. Check or call for more information. 6 December Bulletin 2007 Fall NDHSAA Team Scholar Recipients The NDHSAA, and its premier partner, US BANK, are proud to announce the recipients of the twenty-second annual Team Scholar Award. To be eligible for this award, teams and/or play casts must have a collective Grade Point Average of 3.20 or better based on a 4.0 scale. R- E- S- P- E- C- T. Aretha Franklin reminded us how it s spelled, but a lot of us need coaching on how to show it. In both personal and political relationships, the failure to treat one another with respect is generating incivility, contempt and violence. There s an important distinction between respecting a person in the sense that we admire and hold that person in high esteem and treating others with respect. While respecting others is desirable, respectfulness is morally mandatory. Thus, people of character treat everyone with respect, even those who are not personally worthy of it. The way we behave toward others is an expression of our values and character. Thus, we should treat others with respect, not because they have a right to be respected but because we have a moral duty to do unto others the way we want them to do unto us. Again, it s not because they deserve it; it s because doing less would diminish our own character. That s the message in an old story about the politician who caught himself being drawn into mud slinging and name calling. Once he realized he was lowering himself to his opponent s level, he stopped and said, "Sir, I will treat you as a gentleman -- not because you are one, but because I am one." It can take a lot of self control to be respectful to people who are nasty, dishonorable, or disrespectful to us. Still, our inner sense of integrity should help us resist temptations to fight fire with fire. As Lily Tomlin said, "The problem with the rat race is, even if you win, you re still a rat."

7 2008 State Wrestling Ticket Order Policy The 2008 State Wrestling Tournament will be held February at the Bismarck Civic Center. Group ticket orders can be postmarked no earlier than January 7th and those orders will be processed beginning January 15th. Orders postmarked prior to January 7 will be processed after the January 7 orders. Group orders (12 or more) will receive preference until January 22nd, but will be accepted until February 12th at 5:00 pm. You MUST indicate Class A or Class B for seating priority. 10 Darryl Anderson to Receive NIAAA Distinguished Service Award Twelve individuals who have made outstanding contributions to interscholastic athletics have been named recipients of the 2007 Distinguished Service Awards given by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). These individuals will be honored December 17 in Nashville, Tennessee, during the luncheon at the 38th annual National Conference of High School Directors of Athletics conducted jointly by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the NIAAA. The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to individuals from within the NIAAA membership, as well as those outside the field of athletic administration, in recognition of their length of service, special accomplishments and contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local, state and national levels. Nominations are submitted by state athletic director associations, screened by the NIAAA Awards Committee, and selected by the NIAAA Board of Directors. Those who will be honored include Darryl Anderson, CAA, executive director of the North Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. Since his retirement as athletic director at Mandan (North Dakota) High School in 2002, Darryl Anderson, CAA, has been executive director of the North Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NDIAAA). He has a notable history serving high school athletes, as well as the memberships of both the NDIAAA and the NIAAA. During the past 19 years, he has made substantial contributions in athletic administration both to the Peace Garden State and to the nation. At the local level, Anderson is responsible for adding soccer, ice hockey and baseball to Mandan High School's athletic program. He also established a new athletic budget system for the school district, and re-energized the booster club to the point that it now donates at least $25,000 annually to the school district's athletic department. Anderson is also responsible for developing an evaluation system for coaches. Anderson served as secretary-treasurer, vice president and president of the Western Dakota Association (WDA). Upon his retirement from Mandan in 2002, he was tabbed as the WDA's first-ever executive secretary, a position he holds today along with his NDIAAA duties. Anderson extended his service to the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDH- SAA), where he served on both its Athletic Review Committee and Tournament Committee. He has also managed 87 NDHSAA-sponsored athletic tournaments at the district, regional and state levels in both Class A and B enrollment classifications. In addition, he organized a joint NDHSAA/NDIAAA committee to create event management handbooks. As a 19-year member of the NIAAA and 12-time conference attendee, Anderson served as the North Dakota delegate to the annual conference three times and currently serves as the NIAAA liaison for the state. He also has been active on the National Executive Directors Council, as well as with the NIAAA National Emergency Network. Celebrate 100 Years of Service to Schools Officials and Coaches Mandatory On-Line Testing Officials and head coaches of basketball, gymnastics, hockey, and wrestling must take an open book test in the sport(s) in which he/she is a head coach/official. The test will available online only and must be completed and submitted within the applicable window. The test will be available by following the On-Line Testing links for either Coaches or Officials at the top of the main page of the NDHSAA website ( The test taker may revisit the test site 999 times before submitting his/her test; however, once submitted, no changes may be made. The test results will be available immediately upon submission of the test online. Coaches and officials that miss the testing window will be allowed to take the test only after a late fee of $25 for coaches, or $10 for officials, is paid to NDHSAA.
