The Indiana Junior Classical League delegation may have been small, with only 27 members strong including JCL and SCL members, sponsors, and chaperones at this year s National Junior Classical League Convention. But they still showed a plethora of true Hoosier spirit at the University of California-Davis at Davis, California. Nearly 1,200 delegates were present from across the nation. Angela Roberts of Crown Point pulled a first-ever for Indiana by winning first in the overall sweepstakes in Olympika. She has eight firsts in swimming and a first, a second, and a third in track and field. She was 10th in overall sweepstakes. Jeremy Walker, Crown Point sponsor, was re-elected to the national committee for another five-year term as membership and public relations chairman. The committee reelected him as their vice president. Caitlin Johnston, a Crown Point graduate and a student at Indiana University, finished her year as National Senior Classical League secretary and was named historian for next year. Twelve chapters in the state combined to give Indiana first in the publicity contest by numbers and by percentage of chapters. The state t-shirt placed in the national convention for the second year in a row. The t-shirt designed by Josh Glass, second vice president, finished fourth best overall after placing second in best visual and fifth in best use of theme and most creative. The state publication with Kristen Remley of Hamilton Southeastern/Fishers as editor finished third in the nation. The state scrapbook compiled by Keara Seibert of Fort Wayne Homestead, last year s historian, finished fifth.. The Indiana delegation flew into San Francisco three days before the convention and toured San Francisco. There were time for shopping and eating too. After convention, the group flew home from the Sacramento airport. Indiana was proudly and successfully represented by delegates from all over the state. They represented our state well and should be very happy with all the rewards they received for their hard work. Nationals in North Dakota in 2010 The National Junior Classical League Convention will have its 57th annual convention from July 27 through Aug.1 at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. Preliminary plans are under way for a state trip by bus to take Indiana delegates. Touring may include Chicago, Wisconsin Dells and the Mall of America. Interested persons should contact Dennis Bartlow, IJCL cochair. State Convention at IU The 2010 Indiana Junior Classical League Convention will be March at Indiana University in Bloomington. Any suggestions for state convention should be sent to Saurabh Sharma, IJCL first vice president. Web Site Takes First The Indiana Junior Classical League Web site took first-place honors during the school year. Indiana s Web site last year was maintained by IJCL Webmaster Sam Wathen of Boonville. The Crown Point Web Site finished sixth in local Web sites. It was maintained by Ryan Qualizza. September 2009

3 Membership News The Indiana Junior Classical League had 1,180 members and 28 chapters last year. Both numbers were up from the previous year. Indianapolis North Central had the largest chapter with 108 members, followed by Indianapolis Warren Central with 102, Elwood with 101, and Seymour with 100. Chapter News Crown Point: With new officers Elizabeth Szymanski, Consul, Dominique Bass, and Ashley Pascarella, Co-Praetors, the CPJCL started the summer with our annual Roman Banquet, sold walking tacos in the Taste of Crown Point festival, held our 7th Annual Latin Summer enrichment program, in which we had 40 elementary and middle school students participate, and ran a promotional booth at CPHS's "Bulldog Rush" during freshmen orientation. We also had 13 students represent the Indiana delegation at this year's NJCL Convention in California. Our first meeting was held on August 21 with great success, and we just recently completed our Entertainment Books fundraiser. In the coming weeks, we will be holding a club car wash and our first Adopt-A-Highway cleanup of the year. We also look forward to attending the IJCL Fall Latin Day at Butler University. convention and made $300 for our scholarship fund. We are currently getting ready for our Roman Banquet which we present in conjunction with our school's Theatre Club. We are also planning an ice-cream social in May. We currently have 106 members who will be electing new officers who will be installed at that event. Our year will end with our fourth year dinner as our 23 Latin IV's join the French, Spanish, and German fourth years for an elegant dinner at the Canterbury Hotel in Indy. Terre Haute South Vigo: South Latin students enjoyed the Tut exhibit on Aug 25. We are greatly appreciative to the Lily grant that sponsored the tickets for so many Indiana students. Students had an Egyptian art day the previous Friday to depict their observations of the texts, videos, and Internet on Egyptian culture. Brownsburg: In June, the BJCL traveled to Greece and Italy and enjoyed a short trip to Brussels. The club is gearing up for another fun year by having a picnic on September 15th. Warren Central: The Warren Central Latin Club started the school year full speed ahead last week with our first officers meeting. At the meeting we established our first few fundraisers. We are currently gathering recipes for the first edition of The Classical Cookbook which will be sold at Warren Central s annual Homefest. It will include traditional recipes donated by students as well as some traditional Roman and Greek dishes. We are also organizing a mobile bake sale for our school s Open House. It will tend to parents and teachers who need a sweet pick-me-up after a long day. All of these fundraisers will be a great start for fun events ahead for the Warren Central Latin Club. Seymour: Our SHS/ IJCL year started in June when several club members spent two weeks in Italy with Magistra. August was the month for our officer's Italian dinner. In September, we went to our second President's Day at the zoo. October brought our Scavenger Hunt and Initiation. We also joined our school's Key Club for trick or treating for canned goods for our local homeless shelter. Several members also dressed in Roman garb and marched in our town's Halloween Parade. In November, we had our second annual intra-club certamen tournament and pizza night. In December, we had a Saturnalia breakfast. We also had our annual Trojan Horse auction in which we raised over $200 for our ongoing project, the Student Assistance Fund. In January, we had a pizza and poker night at Mag's house to celebrate Indiana Latin Week. In February, we had our annual Cupid and Psyche Dance. Because of spring break, we were unable to attend state convention, but several members took the NLE in March. 4 National Latin Exam Winners Several Indiana high school Latin students won gold or silver medals on the 2009 National Latin Exam. There were 107 gold medal winners, down from 125 the previous year and 127 silver medal winners, down from 151the previous year. In addition, Wesley Wood, a Crown Point graduate, won one of the National Latin Exam scholarships for four years at Notre Dame. Dues Information Current Indiana Junior Classical League chapters have received membership information and dues forms. Dues are $20 per chapter and $4 per member (for state and national). If you pay before Nov. 15, you can deduct $10 from the chapter dues. Others wanting to join the IJCL should contact Dennis Bartlow or Lisanne Marshall, IJCL co-chairs, for membership forms. Students who join existing chapters after Jan. 15 will be charged an $8 dues fee. Certamen Invitationals Scheduled The Indiana Junior Classical League is planning two certamen invitationals during the school year. The 28th annual Hoosier Certamen Invitational will be Jan. 30 at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis and the 22nd annual Indiana Certamen Invitational will be Feb. 20 at Elwood High School in Elwood. Both invitationals will start at 9:30 a.m. and will be open to all IJCL members. There will be a novice division for first-year students, intermediate division open to first- and second-year students and an advanced division open to all levels, but with an emphasis on third and fourth-year study. Information will be sent to schools by mid-december. Preregistration is required for both events. IJCL officers at the August board meeting. Publicity Indiana continued to dominate the National Publicity Contest by winning the state awards in number of chapters participating and in percentage of chapters participating. Crown Point High School finished fourth in the nation for the second year in a row. They compiled 12,489 points. Elwood was eighth with 4,064 points; Brownsburg 11th with 3,024 points; and Fort Wayne Homestead, 15th with 2,107 points. Each received a silver cup. Receiving certificates for placing between 16th and 30th were Hamilton Southeastern/Fishers, 16th with 1,880 and Indianapolis North Central, 28th with 696. PAGE 5 September 2009

It also is a great way to meet amazing people from across Indiana who all share a love for the Classics and Latin. Interests: I m interested in anything computers, or anything where technology is used. I m all for modernizing things, and my passion is design graphics for people. Extracurricular Activities: I am involved in my local Thespian Troupe #950, National Honor Society, and my church. Why you wanted to join JCL: I wanted to join JCL because I knew it would be an exciting way to help me learn Latin. It was so intriguing as a Freshman because I knew I was going to need some extra help in learning.
