1 Grade Band: Intermediate Unit17 Unit Target: History Unit Topic: Friends in Different Places Lesson 3 Instructional Targets Reading Standards for Literature Range and Level of Text Complexity: Experience grade level and age-appropriate literature materials, including stories, poems, plays, fiction and nonfiction works that are adapted to student reading level. Reading Standards for Foundational Skills Fluency: Read appropriately Leveled Books with accuracy and fluency. Which of your state standards are aligned to these instructional targets? Easy Read Book: Visiting Canada Classroom Activities/Lesson Plan This lesson presents an Easy Read Book. The book follows a sequence to introduce beginning, middle and end concepts of story reading. It also presents the characters, setting and events of a story. In this story, students will learn about Canada. This story tells about a visit to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Moose Jaw is a city in the province, Saskatchewan, in Canada. As we explore and compare different cultures, we can get a feel for life in our neighboring country. This book is identified as a Level E. Multiple readings of the book will provide students with repeated opportunities to build individual reading skills. Do a picture walk. Discuss the characters and actions from the pictures. Help students make predictions about what will happen next in the story. Introduce what will happen first, next and last. Introduce high-frequency words from the story. Read the story aloud to model fluency. Ask questions related to the characters, actions and events in the story. Read the story aloud, pausing for students to complete repetitive or predictable lines. During independent or paired reading, focus on the students individual abilities and needs. Encourage students to use pictures to support reading words. Have students use decoding skills to identify unfamiliar words. Support student reading, using the communication board to do so. Follow up reading by locating Canada on a map or globe. Use a map and help students understand how far Michelle would travel if she was from Arizona. Use the map and discuss how far Canada is from your town/state. Discuss why Michelle and Tracy are happy to see each other. Ask, Why do you think Michelle hasn t been to Moose Jaw for a long time? Discuss how it is expensive to fly and some relatives we do not see as often as others. Have students tell about family members that live far away. Standards Connection Use the book features and the pictures to continue interaction with the book. Have students locate the title, the author and the illustrator of the book. Invite students to identify and describe characters, setting and events from the story pictures. With students, read the text to determine whether this story is told by the author or by one of the characters in the story. Pre- and post-assessments are available through Monthly Checkpoints. Students will state a sentence from a story through an active participation response (e.g., voice output device, eye gaze choice board). 7 4 Tracy and her father drive to the airport. Michelle s airplane will land at 9:00. They wait at the gate in the airport.

8 5 Tracy looks and looks. Then she sees Michelle. Tracy runs. Michelle runs. Tracy and Michelle hug.

9 6 I am happy to see you, Michelle, says Tracy. I am happy to see you too, says Michelle. I like to come to Moose Jaw. I have not been to Moose Jaw for a long time.
