ng Page We re in the midst of preparing for Bayless biggest party in 150 years.you RE invited! The year 2018 will mark the anniversary of the founding of the Bayless School District. While our community and district have grown and changed considerably since 1868, our commitment to children, families and the community we serve remain the same. To mark this milestone, we re planning many events to acknowledge our proud past, present and bright future. The upcoming year will include events and special publications (a Homecoming of sorts), bringing together our students, staff, alumni, families and friends. Coincidentally, Bayless High School s first homecoming parade and football game, on Saturday, October 13th, will also commemorate our 150th Anniversary. As we prepare for this landmark event, you may be asking, What s a good gift for a 150th birthday? I think the very best gift is simply your presence. Offering some of your time and talent by serving on one of our community engagement committees is a great gift that will help ensure the schools continually improve. If you have an interest in student achievement, grounds/facilities, or even auditing financial documents, we have committees we would love for you to join. Only three meetings remain this school year and they typically last only an hour. The next meeting is December 11th. Please consider participating. It s a great way to learn more about your schools and make a difference in the lives of all our Bronchos. You can call my cell at (636) or you can me at rtucker@bayless.k12.mo.us, if you re interested. As our first superintendent Violet C. Bascom shared with the graduating Class of 1932, Bayless has set a high standard in the past, but the real spirit of Bayless is to aspire for greater excellence in the future. The future of Bayless is in your hands and hearts. I ll see you at the party! Ron Tucker Fall 2017

BHS completed the 2017 Homecoming Week with much school spirit, dress-up days, Pack the Place Pink, athletic events, and a dance with record attendance by the student body. Among the student dress-up days were Twin Thursday, where both students and staff participated in the event. BHS staff continue to support student activities by participating in any themes or events proposed by the students. Mrs. Klein and Mr. Nelson often participate in every twin day. In addition to being social studies colleagues, they have a genuine interest in promoting school spirit throughout the year. The Pink Out Game was a way for the BSD to support one of our own parents, Lori Watson, who is fighting cancer. BHS came together to raise money and awareness as we supported Ms.Watson s battle. BHS students created clothing for the children of the some staff members so entire families could support the event. The Pink Out game was well attended as BHS went on to beat Brentwood in Varsity Soccer 4-0. The event included concessions, face painting and shirt sales. All profits will be donated to Mrs. Watson to use as needed. BHS had its annual homecoming Page 6 - Fall 2017 dance on October 7th. The dance was held for the first time in the well decorated and lively Elementary Multi-Purpose Room. The students had a great time dancing the night away prior to watching Homecoming King Dennis Osmanovic and Queen Elma Mehmedovic s coronation. Our Flagpole Looks Different...You may have not noticed, but, the high school has added a third flag to the building s flagpole. We continue to fly the United States and Missouri flags, as well as a new flag: FLAGSHIP. The high school annual performance review (APR), as calculated by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, was the highest in the district last year at 98.6%. The building with the highest APR now will be given the designation of Flagship by BSD and entitled to fly the new flag. The highest score a building can receive on the APR is 100%; so, BHS certainly ranks among the highest scores given in St. Louis County. We began the year chanting Flagship at our first spirit assembly and have been chanting this for three of our last four years at BSD. Now we have a flag, a tangible symbol, of the flagship spirit that our students have at BHS. Principal, S. Patrick McEvoy is very proud of the students and their academic efforts.

The school year was a successful one for BJHS as our students worked to become smarter, better, and stronger members of our community. Now, the school year is in full swing and the 400+ Junior Bronchos are already off to a great start in academics, character, and athletics. The 6th Grade Bash is an annual BJH tradition where all 6th grade students are invited for a day of fun, food, and friendship. Students were greeted by the attending staff and learned the ins and outs of being a Junior Broncho, including building expectations and events in which the students may participate throughout the school year. Students who attended received their schedules before all other Junior High students and were given a tour of the buildings. Prior to a lunch of hotdogs, chips, snow cones, and cookies, the 6th graders were treated to a special performance by the BHS Marching Bronchos. Following lunch, many students hung around to play football, soccer or frisbee on the field. It was an enjoyable event and a great way to kick off the school year. Coming back to school can be a difficult change, but it is the perfect time for students to start their daily schedule off right. Exercise is great at any time of the day, but there are brain-boosting effects if excercising is performed in the morning before school. Throughout the month of September, students worked out every morning with Mrs. Wurth to wake up their whole body and brain by participating in before-school physical activities, including push-ups, squats, sit-ups, wall-sits, and mountain climbers. Numbers consistently increased throughout the month and students who participated indicated that the morning exercise was beneficial. BJH students are provided multiple opportunities to participate in school activities, including intramural and intermural athletics. During the fall, Boys Soccer, Girls Volleyball, and Flag Football take center stage. The BJH Soccer program has been traditionally successful in competition against other schools in our area, and this year under the direction of Mr. Matt Loomis has been no different. The team is highly competitive and spots on the roster are difficult to obtain as year after year many students try out for the team. The team has continued its winning ways this year. Coach Loomis is looking forward to developing the young talent on the team for the future of the program. The BJH Girls Volleyball Last May, Ms. Cathy Thorp was named the District Staff Person of the Year. Cathy is the smiling, cheerful, team has enjoyed over a decade of winning seasons. This year, under energetic Administrative the leadership of Mrs. Ginny Lorbert, they are expecting more of Assistant in the BJH the same. With the retirement of former coach Woody Babb, the Administration Office. team has witnesssed some changes, but their success has continued. Flag Her daily efforts keep football is a co-ed activity with the intent of developing skills in the building running the sport and interest in the high school program. Mr. Nathan like a well-oiled machine. On September 16th, Cathy had Williams and Mr. Beau Pickens have taken the lead in making the the opportunity to represent the BSD in the Affton Days program a huge success. On October 3rd, the BJH team had the Parade. She indicated that she was honored to have the opportunity to travel to The Principia where the Jr. Bronchos played opportunity and that she loves making her Bayless home against its junior high flag football team to a tie. a happy one. Congratulations Cathy, and thank you for all you do. Page 7 - Fall 2017

The school year got off to a great start at BES. On the second day of school, students and staff gathered in the district auditorium to review our character core values, which are commonly referred to as our Bayless Best Bee s Be Respectful, Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Kind and Have Self-control. Students and staff then went on a Character Cruise to teach those expectations and model what the expectations look like throughout the school. Our core values align with the District vision for students to be Smart, Good and Strong. We are committed to good character and are honored to be a Missouri and National School of Character and Gold Level PBIS school. Bayless Elementary October 13 End of 1st Quarter October Student Led Parent Teacher Conferences On August 21st, students and staff were treated to a once in a lifetime total solar eclipse passing through the St. Louis region. Everyone viewed the totality of the eclipse on the baseball field behind the BES. It was an amazing event enjoyed by everyone. The eclipse was followed by Parent Information Night on August 31st. Parents came to school that evening to hear what their children will be learning this year from their teachers. There are many other upcoming events listed below. One event to highlight below is Literacy Night on November 9th. If you have ever wondered as a parent how to support reading and writing at home, this event offers parents and students three sessions to learn ways to support literacy. 9 Build it and they will come One of the best-kept secrets in South County is getting out. Real estate agents know that homes in the Bayless School District are selling fast. Homebuyers recognize the value the Bayless Schools provide from rigorous and relevant instruction, to intentional character development amidst beautiful grounds and facilities. The Bayless Schools have grown and improved considerably over the past four years. Since 2013, both the District s student enrollment and measures of academic achievement have shown steady increases. With the 2014 voter approval of Proposition C, Bayless was able to create additional educational spaces that currently accommodate over 820 elementary students. In addition, the four-classroom Early Childhood Center was built, which today serves 82 three, four, and five-year-old Bronchos. Bayless Schools Anual Performance Report Scores Over Last Five Years TBA As 5th Graders are promoted to the south campus and more families choose to transfer their children from other schools to the Bayless secondary schools, the District now faces a serious need for instructional space at Bayless Junior High. Today, junior high students travel to the high school to attend class several times a day. In addition, all Jr. Bronchos must walk outside and enter the high school to use the library, cafeteria, and many have physical education classes in the high school gym. When the junior high building was first completed in 1934, architects then anticipated future enrollment growth and designed the building so it could easily be expanded to accommodate forthcoming instructional space. The District is currently studying space needs and population projections. Early findings indicate that as attendance swells at the junior high, additional classroom space will soon be needed at the high school as well. This additional instructional space could be addressed, in part, if classrooms currently occupied by junior high classes are returned to the high school for use. With renovations and expansion, the junior high can again provide a library and cafeteria as well as significant classroom space. At the high school, the following are still needed: proper locker rooms, restrooms, concession stand, and a multiuse gym space to accommodate students and teams that regularly use Bayless Field. An old expression observes, People vote with their feet. If current enrollment trends are any indication, more and more people each year are voting for the Bayless Schools. Page 9 - Fall 2017

BECC is beginning its second year in the new center. The program is running at full enrollment capacity and has a steady waitlist of students ready to enroll. Seventy-three families are enrolled in our program, nine languages (including English) are spoken, and 33% of our students speak a language other than English. BECC is licensed and accredited by the state of Missouri and a recipient of the Missouri Preschool Project Grant (MPP). BECC focuses on the whole child through a play-based approach to learning and the Project Construct Curriculum Framework. Service Learning Project Disaster Relief Toiletry Bags After discussing the hurricanes affecting the southern states and sharing ideas about helping others, BECC students chose to collect items for families affected by disasters. Thirty toiletry bags were created and donated to the American Red Cross for families in need during recent natural disasters. The bags were filled with travel personal hygiene supplies and a little love note from the BECC. GOOD LEARNERS, of all abilities, flourish through developmentally appropriate activities and hands-on experiences. STRONG RELATIONSHIPS are built through collaboration among families, staff, and students. WE ARE SMART, GOOD, STRONG! Page 10 - Fall 2017 On Friday, September 22nd, BECC held the first of four Family Involvement Events. Family Movie Night was a huge success with 25 families and 80 people attending. Families created drive-in movie cars with boxes (donated by Get Some Greek) and art supplies, enjoyed dinner and snacks, and watched the movie Trolls.

Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year The District is proud to announce that Mrs. Katy Glass, a BJH and BHS theater teacher, has been named a Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year for the St. Louis Region. Mrs. Glass has worked at Bayless for six years. She was honored at a celebration event hosted by the St. Louis Regional Professional Development Center at Education Plus on July 27. Mrs. Glass is very deserving of this honor, Superintendent Ron Tucker said. Her enthusiam for education and theater is contagious. We are so very proud of opportunites she creates for our students. 12 Alumni News Wear 59 Named Pioneer in Education Six Missouri educators, including Bayless very own Ms. Sally Wear, were honored as Pioneers in Education on Monday, July 31st, for their commitment and contributions to public education in Missouri. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) recognized the 2017 Pioneers during the 56th Annual Cooperative Conference for School Administrators at TanTar-A Resort in Osage Beach. The ceremony took place during a luncheon where more than 600 school district leaders attended. DESE literature cited the following: Sally Wear attended Bayless Schools throughout her elementary and secondary education, and began working as secretary for the principal at Bayless Elementary after graduation. She served in that role for 10 years and then became secretary at Bayless High School. Sally retired from the Bayless School District in Pictured: State Board of Education President Charlie Shields, Sally Wear 59 and Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. She now provides three scholarships to graduating Bayless seniors each year and serves as the President of the Bayless Alumni Association. It is a privilege to recognize these Pioneers for their tireless devotion to education, Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven said. These individuals have dedicated their lives to promoting excellence in education, and we congratulate them on this honor. This marks the 43rd consecutive year that state education officials have presented the Pioneer in Education awards which honor teachers, school administrators, citizens and lawmakers for their distinguished careers and contributions to Missouri public schools. 15 BHS & BJHS NEW BHS GYMNASIUM Over the years, thousands of fans, watched hundreds of athletes score possibly hundreds of thousands of points on the BJH and BHS gym floors. After over 85 years in service, the BJH gym floor was to be replaced (May, 2017). The original floor was sanded and refinished so many times over the years, that its useful life had long passed. The JH project was bid and awarded to Sanders Athletic Flooring, a company specializing in maintaining, repairing and replacing wood athletic floors and courts. On June 4th, with the JH project well underway, the BHS gym was flooded by an unusually heavy rain event which caused flooding so intense, storm water sewers in the area failed. The flooding spread throughout the HS gym and ruined the hardwood floor. Like the JH, the HS gym floor was original from the early 60 s. Due to its age and construction, it was impossible to repair the flooded portions of the floor. After consultation with the Districts insurance carrier, the floor was slated to be replaced on an emergency basis, so that it could be functional shortly after school resumed in August. The floor designs in both buildings followed the same theme of the Broncho. Using stains and paint, the identities of our school and school district appear prominently on our floors. Both floors are floating floors which sit on a layer of impact isolating pads. This system provides cushion to the students, athletes, coaches and officials who use them. The flooring improvements in both gyms will serve our Bayless families and community for many years to come. B J H S BEFORE G Y M N A S I U M AFTER Page 15 - Fall 2017
