2 What are options? In Y10 and 11 students study a set of qualifications called GCSEs ALL study - GCSE English Language/ English Literature 5 lessons per week GCSE Maths 4 lessons per week (5 in Y11) GCSE Combined Science - 6 lessons per week Core PE 2 lessons per week no qualification Personal Development 1 lesson per week in Y10 no qualification In addition students will choose UPTO 4 additional GCSE or BTEC subjects. Because they get to choose these they are called options. They will have 3 lessons of each option per week.

3 Options at Shirebrook Academy Almost no limitations on option choices Extra importance on certain subjects- the EBacc subjects Humanities History and Geography Languages French and Spanish Science Some students have more personalised approach and will receive some alternative provision you should have had a letter home and you will have a personalised options form. Grow 4 BASE Academy Support Foundation Learning extra literacy and numeracy

4 English Baccalaureate award Awarded only to students who have studied all 5 of the following: English Mathematics Science 1 or more Modern Foreign Language French or Spanish 1 or more Humanities subject History or Geography Not compulsory at Shirebrook Academy but viewed positively by many universities and encouraged for those students who feel they would be able to manage the rigour of a language and a humanities subject. 4

5 Subjects Overview Students must choose 1 of the following subjects as their first choice GCSE FRENCH GCSE SPANISH GCSE GEOGRAPHY GCSE SEPARATE SCIENCES (only available to eligible students) GCSE HISTORY Limitations Can only do the language you have studied in Year 9

6 Subjects Overview Students must then choose up to 3 of the following subjects BTEC HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE BTEC IT TECH AWARD BTEC PERFORMING ARTS (DANCE) BTEC SPORT GCSE ART GCSE BUSINESS STUDIES GCSE COMPUTER SCIENCE GCSE DT: GRAPHICS GCSE DT: RESISTANT MATERIALS GCSE DRAMA GCSE FOOD PREPARATION & NUTRITION GCSE FRENCH GCSE GEOGRAPHY GCSE HISTORY GCSE MEDIA GCSE MUSIC GCSE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY GCSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION GCSE TEXTILES GCSE SPANISH GCSE SEPARATE SCIENCES (eligible students only) Limitations Can t do Art and Textiles Can t do Art and Photography Can t do BTEC SPORT and GCSE PE Can t do RM and Graphics Courses will only run if there are enough students that have picked it

7 GCSE v BTEC? BTECs are vocational courses they mimic and directly develop workplace skills. BTECs usually involve more practical work than most traditional GCSEs. They recognise skills that are valuable in the workplace. With BTECs less of the final mark is based on exams unlike most traditional GCSEs. More of the final mark is based on the coursework assessment. GCSEs have exams at the end of the course to assess students. With BTEC assessment is continuous and takes place during Y10 and Y11. BTECs require a high level of independence to be successful. GCSEs are assessed on a 1-9 scale, BTECs are assessment on a PASS/ MERIT /DISTINCTION scale

8 Where do the courses lead? Progression routes available will depend on the level reached at 16 but when students leave school they will progress to either - School 6th Form College Employment with Training (Apprenticeship) Students who achieve a Level 2 qualification can move on to a Level 3 course, i.e. A Level, AS Level, BTEC National

Today From today This week Option books and draft option form distributed Exam results and PD lesson focussed around options Meetings with individuals who we feel may need some extra support Curriculum taster lessons and presentations 12 th February PD lesson focussed on options 14 th February Options Evening collect final options form on arrival 15 th February Library open for drop-in advice pre-school, break and lunch 25 th February Deadline for options forms to be handed into FORM TUTOR AM reg w/c 25 th February w/c 4 th March Consultation with students who have mis-completed forms Discussion re the viability of subjects Consultation with students who need to choose alternative option choices
