5 RELA & High School credit 7th Grade RELA is virtually paperless. Chromebooks in class allow for teacher innovation. Teachers include TEKS for keyboarding & speech. Students leave 7th grade with high school credits in: Touch Systems Data Entry (.5 credit) Professional Communications (.5 credit)

9 Prerequisites: A prerequisite is a course that must be taken before another course may be taken. Beginning Art must be taken (7th grade) before Intermediate Art or Applied Arts and Crafts (8th grade). Theater I must be taken (7th) prior to Theater II (8th). Intro to Spanish (7th) must be taken before Spanish I (8th) unless student has a 90+ in OL RELA or 85+ in PreAP RELA.

14 Physical Education vs. Athletics PE: overview of several sports & activities, like bowling, soccer & basketball. Athletics: teams compete against other middle schools in track, basketball & volleyball for girls & football for boys. You do NOT have to be in athletics to try out for a sport but if you make the team, your schedule WILL change..

15 Athletics continued Class lasts the entire school year. Requires you to dress out EVERY day (in an RMS athletic uniform & appropriate shoes). Is for those who want to compete & work hard EVERY day. We consider athletics a PreAP PE. Has expectations & activities that are intense. If you don t make a team, you will be in off season class. 7th grade athletics is 1st period. If you are on a team, be ready to participate at 7:00 AM for football & 7:30 AM for volleyball, basketball, and track.

16 Boys Athletics Football 1st semester (athletics all year) there are no tryouts for football, & if you sign up for athletics for the year, you will play football Basketball may move into the course in November if you try out & make the team. Track 2nd semester May take PE in the fall & Athletics in the Spring

17 Girls Athletics Volleyball Tryouts are the first week of school. Basketball Tryouts are after volleyball season (around the first of November) Track - Track season begins after basketball ends (around February) Girls who do not make the volleyball or basketball team will participate in Off-Season Track.

18 Cross Country & Soccer Both are UIL For both boys & girls Neither are part of Athletics period Cross Country is in August & September with practice before school Soccer is in April & May and practice is after school

19 Cheerleading Mandatory Parent Meeting Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 5:00pm in the library. Tryout packets distributed. Tryout clinic: Feb. 21 & 22 Optional Mock Tryout: Feb. 28 Tryouts: March 1 & 2 If you make the squad, you will be required to take 1 semester of Cheer Training (fall), which counts as 1 semester of PE OR 1 elective.

20 Dance Team Performs at events such as: pep rallies, basketball games, dance competitions, spring show & others. Informational Parent Meeting: Mon. April 16, 5 p.m. Tryout clinic: Mon. April 30 & Tues. May 1, 4:15 p.m. Mock tryouts: Wed. May 2, 4:15 p.m. Tryouts: Friday May 4, 5 p.m. Enrolled in class in Spring semester Spring Show Friday, April 27

21 Off Campus PE (OCPE): Requires at least 5 hours of training Monday-Friday. Does NOT include any training/games on Saturdays or Sundays. Students select an additional elective in place of school PE class. Parents must complete the OCPE application on the district website - not through RMS. Applications available after Spring Break To do OCPE & be on a Athletic team at RMS, you must take Athletics (RMS teams require you to be in the class).

24 Placement Recommendations are made by current teachers with focus on student success Course changes: To make a change from PreAP to Level, make the change on the card and sign. To make a change from Level to PreAP, parents contact current teacher to discuss. Also, indicate the change on the card and sign.

26 Gifted & Talented Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) In the STEM elective course Working within guidelines of GT standards TPSP Needs of GT students are also met in PreAP classes.

27 Reading & Math Strategies Classes: If you do NOT pass the Math &/or Reading STAAR you will be placed in a Strategies class which will take the place of an elective. 28 Verification Sheets: Sent home before the end of the school year Are NOT the same as a SCHEDULE They merely VERIFY what you are REQUESTING in your schedule. If you see a class on the verification sheet that was NOT your top elective choice, either there is a conflict with another class that you want OR the class may be full. In this case, 1 of the backup choices on the yellow card would be substituted for 1 of the electives listed on the Verification Sheet. That is why it is SO important that you list ALTERNATIVES that really want to take.

29 And a message from our friendly school nurse Any student whose immunization is due during the summer OR the 1st semester of the new school year MUST update the immunization record prior to participating in Camp Longhorn.

30 Student Annual Update Dates & additional information will come soon. Immunization record must be current with the school nurse prior to Camp. Proof of Residency is still required for Camp.
