1 MOUNT HOREB HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER March 2019 FROM THE PRINCIPAL As I am writing this our students are very busy with spring activities. Spring sports have started, our music and theatre programs have been working on individual and group performances, and our activity programs are involved in competitions, conferences, and banquets. I had the opportunity to attend the FFA banquet and join in recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of the members. What an impressive group of young people doing amazing things! Congratulations to all our students for their hard work and thank you for your positive representation of MHHS! Each year our Badger Conference recognizes the top scholars from each conference school at the Badger Conference Honors Banquet. The selection of students for this prestigious award is determined by our Capstone formula. Specifically, the Capstone formula is the student's cumulative grade point average at the end of the seventh semester multiplied by Capstone points (including 2nd semester courses) plus the ACT score posted on the transcript at the end of the 7th semester. Congratulations to the following Vikings for representing MHHS at the 2019 Badger Conference Honors Banquet: Martha Barta, Connor Dyjach, Lindsay Dyjach, Mariah Lesar, Eliza Lindley, Nya Lizdas, Ireland McMahan, Patrick Penne, Sarah Toay and Brandon Wilson. I appreciate the support from the community for our school and students. Thank you to our parents for attending the parent teacher conferences on March 5th. Your engagement in your child s educational experience is valued and important. Thank you. Graduation will take place on Sunday, May 19 at 3:00 p.m. at the Alliant Energy Center. Rehearsal for graduating seniors is scheduled for Friday, May 17 at 8:00 a.m. here at the high school. More graduation details will be in next month s newsletter. 2 LMC NEWS The library is hosting a March Madness book tournament. Students who wish to participate should look for s in their school gmail. The next book club meeting is scheduled for 3/23 during lunch. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY National Honor Society is hosting a blood drive on March 20. The faculty council is currently reviewing new candidate packets. Students who applied can expect to receive news about membership by the end of March. Students who are selected for membership should plan to attend induction on April 24 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. SENIOR AWARDS PROGRAM MAY 1 The Senior Awards Program will be held on Wednesday, May 1 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Many seniors will be awarded with scholarships and distinguished honors for their achievements over the course of the past four years. Seniors who will be receiving awards or scholarships will be notified through a letter that will be mailed home in April to their parent or guardian. SILVER CORDS HOURS Silver Cord hours for graduating seniors are due in the office by April 1, ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS TO BE HELD IN MAY The first of many AP exams will be given beginning May 6. Students must be present at the designated time for their respective exam. Teachers have communicated these specific dates and times to all AP students. 3 ART DEPARTMENT NEWS VISUAL ARTS CLASSIC REGIONAL COMPETITION Our VAC team placed 1st in the regional Quiz Bowl and 2nd overall at the Cardinal Stritch Regional on Friday, March 8. Our entire team will advance to compete in the Quiz Bowl at state on Friday, April 12 at UW Madison, and several members will move on for receiving a 1st place in their long term and/or their on-site challenges. The Visual Arts Classic Competition consists of the completion of a long term prompt which is displayed and judged as soon as the competition starts while individuals receive on-site prompts to complete in three hours. After the on-site challenges the teams receive a Critical Thinking Prompt and have a limited amount of time to plan and perform a skit. The last event of the day is a Quiz Bowl consisting of thirty questions based on the current year s artist list and theme (this year s theme is Art in Simplicity). 4 YOUTH ART MONTH ART SHOW Several of our student artists are moving on to the State YAM Art Show at the State Capitol Building in Madison. The state show begins on Sunday, March 24 and will be on display in the rotunda until the closing reception on Friday, April 5 from 12:00-1:00 pm. This is an amazing celebration of K-12 artists around the state of Wisconsin and we look forward to going every year! If you have a chance, please take your families to check out the show! 5 PROM 2019 The class of 2020 is proud to announce: Prom 2019 Saturday, May 11th from 8-11pm in the high school main gym. Tickets will be $15 ahead of time and $20 at the door due to our amazing DJ Mando! All Mount Horeb High School students are welcome to attend and must present their student ID before entering. If they do not have their ID with them they will need to wait in a line to be checked in via infinite campus. If a Mount Horeb student wishes to invite a guest from another high school they will need to complete a form (pick this form up in the main office) prior to the week of prom. NOTES FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT Solo/Ensemble News Congratulations to our many successful musicians who performed at the recent District Solo/Ensemble Festival. Well over ninety entries qualified for the State Festival. That event will take place on Saturday, April 27 at UW-Platteville. The schedule for the festival will come out about a week ahead. Students will get more information after Spring Break. Viking Band Show This year's show "Incrediband" will be presented on April 4, 5 and 6 in the high school auditorium. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and cost $10.00 each. All seats are reserved. Our special guest this year is Mariel Bildsten, a freelance trombone player in New York City. Other concert highlights include music from the Broadway show "Wicked", a tribute to Boy Bands, music from Duke Ellington, Marvel Studios movie themes, jazz groups, section features and more. Spring Music Events The conclusion of the year will include many music performances. May 2 Spring Orchestra Concert for students in grades 4 through 12 in the auditorium at 7:00 p.m. May 9 Spring Band Concert for students in grades 6 through 12 - in the main gym at 7:30 p.m. May 13 High School Choir Spring Concert - in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m. May 19 Graduation - for all band and choir members in the high school - students need to be available from noon to 5:30 that day; more details to follow May 27 Memorial Day Program and Parade - for all high school band members - in the main gym at 10:00 a.m.

6 UW Varsity Band Concerts High school band members will once again be part of this year's UW Varsity Band Concerts. If you attend one of the performances, look for a familiar face as you enter the Kohl Center and spot the MHHS band uniforms on stage. Drum Major Try-outs As we wind down the current school year, we're also starting plans for the fall. Band members registered for next year are eligible to try-out for Drum Major. Applications will be available starting April 29; a short workshop to prep for the audition will be held after school on May 14 and try-outs will take place after school on May 21. DECA DECA, an Association of Marketing students, had a great showing at the State Career Development Conference! Twenty-one DECA members attended the State DECA Career Development Conference in Lake Geneva March 5-7. They were joined with over 1400 DECA members from across the state and competed in a variety of events. Students choose an occupational category and complete a Comprehensive Exam focused either on the content of Management, Finance, Marketing or Hospitality. Additionally, they are provided two marketing case studies in which they have 10 minutes to develop and then role play their ideas and present them to marketing professionals. Mt. Horeb did an outstanding job receiving the following awards.

7 Quinn Lightfoot led the chapter and completed the Gold Chapter project that received the highest level of recognition by the State for a comprehensive DECA program. The following students were Champions in their events excelling in both written tests and role plays--and they have qualified to compete in Orlando, Florida this April: Ines Gilles and Ally Gundrum Business Law and Ethics Tess Purin Principles of Hospitality Molly Maguire and Kate Geisler Learn and Earn project Sydney Flaherty, Mariah Lesar, and Emma Thompson Entrepreneurship Promotion Project Brandon Wilson and Gracie Hamburg Marketing Management This is an exciting time for Mount Horeb DECA, but members are realistic about the need to cover their travel expenses and registration to the conference. This may pose an excellent opportunity for local businesses and organizations to help sponsor our students as they prepare and develop marketable career skills.
